I stopped using filters when I started seeing lens flare shooting in the sun even with high quality filters. Yet, here I am again trying to figure out if I should use a filter to protect my lens.

A lens hood all the time is a better solution than a $100 filter which could degrade the quality of the image. My lens (mint used) for Canon and Pentax cost around $300.

Finally a logical explanation. I recently got my hands on the Sony f4 70-200mm oss macro ii and theirs no way I would go out without a filter on. I’d rather lose 100 bucks then have a 1700 dollar lens go down the drain. I can fix minor photo issues with software.

So, Having at least a quality clear filter for your lens is like having a garage for your car. Personally, I'd garage my car as often as possible, or as often as practical.

You could but a lens hood on. So you would get less stray light (which is usually a good thing) and protect your lens from most things effectively

When using a smaller resolution file you are still using all the sensor and not only the center part. You still get the full image and not a croped part. The camera just merges pixels to reduce resolution, just like reducing resolution on a software. Other than that it's a nice explanation.

Most of these sound like great arguments for what I do: shoot RAW+JPEG, putting the RAW files onto the CFExpress card and the JPEGs onto the SDXC card.

When I want something ready to share immediately, small files, no post production, I use my smartphone. For action photography when I need to take *long* burst of images that might exceed the capacity of raw files to be buffered and stored to memory card...I use nothing because I don't need this. I don't think many people actually do. For everything else - photography with a "real" camera and tweaking in Lightroom - I use RAW files because it only has advantages in those circumstances. It's not being snob it's being pragmatic. Why would I spend so much money on lenses and whatnot and then compromise on what I can do with the files and their quality ? If I was a professional and my workflow needed to be as streamlined and fast as possible, or a sport photographer, I might consider JPEGs but I'm not.

Pretty good explanations BUT… (1) a medium or small jpeg does not use fewer photosites on the sensor as that would result in a cropped image - medium or small jpegs are the result of the camera downsizing the jpeg it produces from the entire sensor and (2) I make the point that it can be difficult to correct jpegs if inappropriate settings are applied in camera - I make the comparison with putting table salt on food in that if you put too much on, you can remove most of it but not always all of it; in the case of a jpeg you can apply (say) too much sharpening to a jpeg in camera, and its not always possible to undo all of that sharpening, whereas with raw you apply sharpening in post which can be either what you set on the camera or something entirely different and in both cases you work from the original, not an already part-corrected image/

just found your video. You began with jpg and sent to PS but did not show the return. I am on a Mac using the latest version of lr and ps in 2024. When I hit save I am presented with a save as dialogue. It is years since I shot in jpg but and trying to reprocess some of the older photos and I can’t remember if this is how it is supposed to work. Raw, Nikon, dng and Sony files round trip just fine. Am I missing something. Do jpgs act differently. Thanks. PK
