Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2 Review: Two runners deliver their verdict on the updated Vaporfly

Спорт

The Nike Vaporfly is back and it’s cheaper than ever, but is it better than ever? Nike has opted for evolution rather than revolution with its updates to the shoe, with all of the changes coming in the upper, which is now made from a knit rather than the Vaporweave material used on the original NEXT%.
Run Testers Kieran and Nick have been putting the Vaporfly 2 through its paces and are ready to deliver their verdict on whether the changes Nike has made have improved the shoe, as well as ranking it against the other carbon racers out there.

    Nice review. Thanks. It really helped me out. I was very frustrated that I could not get the heel to fit/snug in. Especially the right foot had a very "loose" feeling. I was lucky to get a new pair of next% (1) and next% 2 at the same time. After trying them, I find the next% 1 as a better fit that the next%2, so I returned the V2 back to Nike. Maybe it is because I am used to the zoomfly 3, but I find the V1 more cushion and with more "spring" in it also and the laces were more easy to get in place. The breaking point for me was the "loose" heel feeling. Funny thing is, that I just experience the same thing with Nike Pegasus 37. Old version had a nice fit on the heel, but the new pair I got, I cannot get the heel to be held in place. Do not know if nike change supplier or overall design on fabric, but eventually I gave up on them. Need to find some new mileage shoes, any suggestions?

    Thanks. I had some right Achilles pain too in the V1 managed to work round it during a marathon by loosing it a bit but then I got a blister (which was better than the Achilles pain) I was considering trying the v2 a half size up. Still loved the shoes performance. Def advise practicing and tinkering with before any big race.

    Sorry to hear that Alan. (Kieran here). Not sure going half a size up would have fixed the rubbing I experienced. But these are definitely shoes you need to pay close attention to lacing well. I think some shoes you can whack on and get away with it, these you need to spend a bit of time adjusting the fit.

    great review! would you suggest 'wearing-it-in' on some initial runs so that your feet get used to it and to avoid blisters, and then put it away until race day?

    I'd custom order this shoe via the By You option and spec the "speed lace". Avoids having to stop and readjust the lacing. Uses one of those "piston-lock" itmes you see on jacckets, exercise pants...etc.

    Just got this shoe on Black Friday sale. I find it tight in my normal size with socks. Without socks it’s perfect! I’ll probably wear some ultra lightweight socks for racing in these.

    Thanks, it’s a tough choice haha! I (Nick) was happy with the Alphafly in my marathon at the weekend, but it does feel a lot of shoe at times. I’m going to do a VS video on them with more detail, hopefully may help. The good news is either way you’re going to be running in a great marathon shoe!

    @@TheRunTesters thanks so much for the reply Nick and hope your marathon went well. Both great shoes definitely - I find the alphas help me to roll on with a really smooth pace and let me legs recover really quickly but I’ve found them a little uncomfortable in the toe box on one side and underfoot after a couple of hours. Vaporfly seems to ‘bottom out’ a little more for me but no issues with comfort. Close call!

    Interesting you both had the same heel issue, I might just stick a plaster on as a little extra protection. The Next%2 light blue just launched in my country and was sold out in mins. I failed to get a pair. Then, strangely the Next%1 then suddenly became readily available in my size, common US10.5. Usually they are all sold out within mins. Even stranger, now I am not prepared to buy 🤣. The Next%1 still selling at US$250, and I want to wait for the cheaper Next%2 but I'm not sure how long I have to wait. So Kieran was spot on, it depends on which pair you get your hands on, just grab it either.

    It's an odd one that the V1 are more expensive. Sort of feels odd to pay more for something that's older but that scarcity is likely to see a bunch of V1s still being sold.

    Hi, sorry to hear you've had some knee issues. This isn't something we've found ourselves with these shoes but with so much going on underfoot with these shoes, it's possible it'd have an impact if you're not used to running in them/you notice they make you run differently.

    Thanks guys! Really enjoying your reviews. I have the original Pegasus turbo for all distances. They aren't in bad shape so I may keep them for more training. Is the new Vaporfly 2 a good successor (from Nike) to the turbo? As they don't make it anymore I'm not sure which shoe from Nike I should look at? Many thanks for your advice

  • @TheRunTesters

    @TheRunTesters

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, glad you're enjoying the reviews! So the Vaporfly is more of a pure racer than the Peg Turbo, so I (Nick) wouldn't use it for lots of training like I would the Turbo (it's less stable, less durable, that kind of thing). But it is a step up when it comes to race day, so you could train in the Turbo and race in the Vaporfly. Nike hasn't really got a shoe that replaces the Peg Turbo in my mind (still hoping they might bring it back!), the best option when it comes to that is the Saucony Endorphin Speed for me.

    @@TheRunTesters thanks Nick! I've watched your review of the new zoom x invincible run too with interest as the turbo successor, but I think these clearly offer great cushioning, they aren't the answer either. I'm leaning towards the Vaporfly as the best race day alternative especially given the price difference over the Alphafly now.

  • @TheRunTesters

    @TheRunTesters

    That's interesting. It's been the right heel for both of us too. Thicker socks, plasters on the area that rubs, perhaps applying some vaseline to the outside and inside of the sock and then just trying to make sure the foot is tightened in the shoe are the things we'll be be trying next time out.

    For my marathon I (Nick) went with a plaster plus zinc oxide tape over the area, worked well!

    Try surgical tape. It’s considerably cheaper than plasters, and far more adhesive, won’t slip with sweat/rain. I use this to avoid any nipple irritation in cold or humid weather and works brilliantly.

    Are the N%2 worth getting as one shoe as part of a rotation & if so, where would they sit? Threshold, long run, tempo pace?

  • @TheRunTesters

    @TheRunTesters

    3 жыл бұрын

    They're a shoe you'd need a rotation for yep, and they're really best used for racing/speed sessions/key long runs ahead of an event, that kind of thing. You'd probably want at least one more durable workhorse shoe alongside them to do the bulk of your training in.
