Vaporfly Next Percent - First Run

Спорт

Today, I went for my first run in the Nike Vaporfly Next %. This is a phenomenal shoe that simultenously is unlike anything I've ever run in while also feeling extremely familiar. There are notes from the Vaporfly v1,the Zoom Fly SP, and even Zoom Streak 7. The extra Zoom X is not just extra cushion, but it seems to provide an extra level of bounceback. The upper was comfortable and quick drying. And the outsole pattern was grippy and protected the foam in all the right places. To the extent I had any problems with prior Vaporfly, the Vaporfly Next solved them while also delivering a new level of performance that I was not expecting. It's simply spectacular.
Disclosures: this is a pair of shoes that I purchased with my own money. No one sent this shoe to me, nor is anyone paying me to make this video. As mentioned in the video, the socks I was wearing were provided by Nike last October for the Chicago Marathon. IN ADDITION: I realized while editing this video that the Apple Watch that I am wearing was also provided as a gift by Nike after the Chicago Marathon last October. My apologies for the omission.
FAQ: Yes, this is true to size. It is roomier than the Vaporfly Flyknit and very similar in fit to the Vaporfly v1. However, and this is the second glaring omission from this video, the toe box on my left foot felt a bit shallow, much like the problems I faced with the Pegasus 35 Turbo last year. I hope that this is an issue that will resolve over time, and I will update in a follow up video.

    Fascinating shoe! Seems like you are really ramping up to peak training for your marathon. Stay vigilant for any minor niggles that don’t go away. It seems like you are doing a large % of your mileage close to marathon pace and not enough easy miles (8:45/mi and slower). Those slower miles aren’t “junk” they will help with recovery, muscle capillary growth, and fat burn.

    What do you think of the stability of the shoe? You mentioned it causing discomfort on that sloped road - many people seem to get overpronation issues with VF4% over time, myself included somewhat, and was wondering if the changed outsole/midsole shape helps with that. Or if the added forefoot ZoomX and decreased drop have some effect on it one way or another.

  • @kofuzi

    @kofuzi

    5 жыл бұрын

    overall, the stack height it higher, and the extra bounciness makes it seem less planted, overall. i would not consider it an improvement in this regard, although it's not been a problem for me in either event

  • @DeltaThreeFour

    @DeltaThreeFour

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the info! The stability was the only imperfection for me with the VF4% FK and even though I could live with it, that was the place for Nike to make real improvement. That, and adding more width to the midsole which seemed to be #1 complaint everywhere. This upper looks like a downgrade for me, didn't like the original at all. I'll buy it eventually for the added ZoomX and hope for the best.

    Could you feel the drop change between this version and the original? That was one of my nitpicks with the original it just felt a little too steep with that 11mm drop. The only other nitpick I have is the higher and more narrow arch area both shoes seem to maintain.

    Hi, Kofuzi! Would you recommend this shoe for "middle of the pack" runners? I bought the 4% flyknits mostly in anticipation for race day recovery (and a little help during the races). In 2 races, my legs felt great afterwards. But as a "middle of the pack" runner, I felt very self conscious showing up in the 4%. The Next% are even more unique and noticeable, but the extra foam I would imagine could make race performance and recovery even better. I'm looking to run the Chicago Marathon at a 9 min.mil pace, but anticipating up to 10 min/mil just to give myself the psychological wiggle room. All of this to say, are the Next% only for BQers or can the rest of us enjoy them as well?

  • @kofuzi

    @kofuzi

    5 жыл бұрын

    Ultimately, it's your feet and your wallet. I think people should wear what they want. if you're feeling a bit self conscious, and I can relate to that, then perhaps the regular 4% is the way to go. But remember that the people who are going to be "upset" are usually projecting their own insecurities

    Did you ever read the University research article referenced by Alex Hutchinson in a Sweat Science article proving that the carbon plate has no effect on making you run faster? The study showed that it was actually the ZoomX foam that provided the 4% performance increase.

    Good review but I would be glas if you could clarify one important aspect. Vaporfly 4% flyknit is extremely narrow and so for many (including myself with a slightly lower feet than normal it was unconfortable and too narrow at midfoot), i own a new Zoom Fly 3 in size 40.5-us 7.5 which is perfect and surprisingly wider at midfoot. For example vaporfly 4% in size 40.5 was way too narrow. Could you please confirm if it is same narrow as the 4%? Or it is more like the new Zoom Fly 3 in size? Thanks and all the bests for your chanell!

    Oh I'm sure Nikes are pretty amazing. I just think they're a big conglomerate - so of course they have big R&D money for running shoes, which is now paying dividends (and yes, ultimately benefits runners too.) I'd more rather stick with companies who are dedicated to running like the Sauconys of this world. That being said - I guess I'm a hypocrite, since I just purchased the Skechers GRR7 to see what the fuss is about hah. Like I said, I gotta respect what Nike is putting out now, even though I personally won't buy them.

    This is a question I get a lot and one that a lot of people have a lot of strangely strong opinions on. My answer is: if you have the money and want it, go ahead and get them. They're your feet and it's your wallet. Nike says that the shoe benefits all running levels. And I agree with that. For those people that say you shouldn't, I think I can distill those opinions down to the concept that there may be less value in spending this type of money on a race shoe in terms of price per performance.

    QUESTION(s) QUESTION(s): 1) MARATHON SHOES vs TRAINING SHOES im going into a military training program. they say we will run 16 miles a week for 5 months. i keep seeing on nike website that yes these new X% style shoes are good for running, but they are for "marathons", while the website lists similar shoes (w/ carbon plate) for "everyday training purposes". my question is: is there some disadvantage to getting the "marathon" shoe for someone in my situation. is there some kind of stress-factor that im not accounting for that the "everyday training shoe" will better avoid. 2) CURVED TOE AREA why are the 2020 X%s and some others sort of curved in the toe area. i've never had shoes like that, and am unsure if the transition to curved-toe shoes from a lifetime of pretty bland basic oval-shaped soled shoes will put me at a disadvantage during my 5 months of daily competition About Me: - i do sprints 3x a week - Saturdays i do 7-12 miles depending on location - i've been called a "heel striker" because i tore my lower back a decade ago and also have naturally weak/small glutes - 5'10. 180lbs. - at training i will be doing about 3 miles a day on mixed surfaces (road, track, grass). - training at Rhode Island. And some people will swear that they can dice an onion better with a paring knife or stem a strawberry better with a 9” chefs knife. But there are different types of knives for a reason. 2. See #1.
