Cameraman Tom’s our guinea pig as we host an incredibly scientific experiment involving a 5k parkrun course, regular running shoes and a pair of Nike Vaporfly NEXT%s.
So, how much can these shoes do for the average runner like Tom? Watch now to find out!

I had Hoka Carbon X, but it didn't actually make me any faster on 10k or half marathon. But I can say they are extremely comfy and I had no injuries. Truly an awesome trainer, marathon and ultra running shoe. I just got Nike Zoom Fly 3 with carbon plate, which feels fast and springy. Can't wait to test them out.

I think us less experienced runners have more natural variation in our times, so not totally convinced it was all down to the trainers....but good effort! Still, I thought £120 was a lot to drop on trainers so will have to go without the Vaporfly gains.

Awesome video! My hobbit feet would probably have the Vaporflys bursting at the seams, but it was interesting to see a "regular Joe" putting them through their paces. I wouldn't have expected them to make much of a difference at this pace to be honest. As others have commented, a lot of factors might have contributed to the better time, but it does look like at least some of it must be the shoes. Tom looked, and said himself that he felt better in the Vaporflys, maybe he really did gain about 4% from the shoes, and the rest from other factors. Also very nice to see a 30 min+ 5K runner on youtube, makes me feel a little better about my own slow running. Comparison isn't always the thief of joy, though that usually is the case...

Have we considered the possibility that Tom may simply have experienced a temporary psychological boost from using the Vaporfly's? The mind does play a huge part in any sporting endeavor and knowing that one is expecting to perform better in one shoe than another shoe may simply have caused lower expectations on the first run and higher expectations on the second one.

Interesting test and something have tried to work out for myself. I would certainly be faster in any race shoe than a heavy daily trainer but not by that much. One of the big plus points of a shoe like the NEXT% is that it is as cushioned as most shoes designed just for that but way lighter and certainly gives me a mental lift as well as physical one whenever put them on. They do also last longer than some might thing. I have done over 250 miles in one pair and still feels similar to a newer pair and have heard of some doing as much as 800 miles in a pair.

I think for a runner of his ability the shoes made a difference in the following ways: First, the weight difference: Dragging those Asics around (I imagine they are easily 150g heavier per shoe than the Nikes) which equates to dragging many extra KGs over the distance. Second, the cushioning reducing the strain on tendons and ligaments. You'd need to run a lot faster for any beneficial energy return from the foam or rather, fatigue reduction. I also wonder, did he run at all in between the two Time Trials? Kudos Tom for the improvement. Shoes or not and improvement is an improvement.

Interesting video. I'm sure part of the improvement was down to some increased fitness as result of doing the first 5km a week before. Personally, I wouldn't be interested in getting the shoes at the moment, but if the time comes when I'm parkrunning and racing regularly again, it might be worth making the investment

I'd add a 3rd run with his Asics a week after. Tremendous improvement in fitness can be gained when you run a never done before distance and recover fully.

I just bought my 1st pair of carbon plated shoes.... the difference is NO joke! I run on a treadmill so I can monitor the environment more closely. I was running faster, 20% longer, and my HR was 10% less. Even at the end I felt I could keep going. The reduction of wear and tear along with the energy return is a game changer.

This is what makes this channel great - acknowledging that an average runner is a 30 minutes (ish!) parkrunner, who longs for death after 5k! You really should have done two more sessions, first with Nike, second with Tom's old shoes, to balance out practice and fatigue effects. (not a fan of in-vid ads). Sadly, I have flippers instead of feet, so will stick to my Altra toe-boxes! X

Nice video and great having someone who is running times most of us can relate to. There must be some physical improvement to wearing the Nike's definitely, but agree there will be a psychological boost too and what's wrong with that? A lot of running is mental so if you feel quicker, feel like you can run longer, then 'just do it'.

I believe some of this is the mechanical advantage that the shoe offers but as Tom said, he felt a lot more comfortable in them and better supported. And you always run faster when you feel good. So as well as the mechanical advantage, there will have been a psychological advantage too as they gave Tom more confidence to push a little harder. Well done Tom. Keep it up mate, you'll be chasing Andy down at park runs soon!

I think what Tom said at the end is very accurate. "You cant cheat aerobic fitness with shoes". I am an average runner with 6.00 min/km avg pace for 10k .. I bought a fancy pair of adidas shoes recently and the avg pace was just down to 5.58min/km ... Thats when I realized that for us average folks, its never about the gear, its about the person in that gear.. You are better off saving ur $ and working on your fitness rather than fancy gear.

Love the fact that both 5k runs are in this video, and that it wasn't tested by a guy running at impossible paces for an average runner. I just got myself Zoom Fly 3 with carbon plate, and this gives me hope to break my 10k record this week.

He'd get better and have soreness in much higher variations then a conditioned runner. There's no point trying it on a newbie. That's like putting new tires on a car you've never driven and saying the car feels better.

He def improved by running a 5k the week b4 running in the next% I really do believe the shoes helped him too. 8 per cent is crazy tho. I'd say 4 per cent shoe gain and 4 percent fitness gains!

You can certainly gain 3 minutes on your 2nd 5k when you’re just starting out. You guys should know this. Its like weight lifting, this is just beginner gains. I have these shoes, and my review is that it feels like it puts substantially less mileage on my knees, and when you’re running fast, it pushes you to keep the speed, which isn’t magic because you have to be careful not to burn out.
