Lyrics: The Greatest Show on Earth
I. Four Point Six
Archaean horizon
The first sunrise
On a pristine Gaea
Opus perfectum
Somewhere there, us sleeping
[Spoken]
"After sleeping through a hundred million centuries
We have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet
Sparkling with color, bountiful with life
Within decades we must close our eyes again
Isn't it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief
Time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe
And how we have come to wake up in it?"
II. Life
The cosmic law of gravity
Pulled the newborns around a fire
A careless, cold infinity
In every vast direction
Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone
She has a tale to tell
From the stellar nursery into a carbon feast
Enter LUCA
The tapestry of chemistry
There's a writing in the garden
Leading us to the mother of all
[Chorus 1]
We are one
We are the universe
Forbears of what will be scions of the Devonian sea
Aeons pass, writing the tale of us all
A day-to-day new opening
For the greatest show on Earth
Ion channels
Welcoming the outside world to the stuff of stars
Bedding the tree of a biological holy
Enter life
The tapestry of chemistry
There's a writing in the garden
Leading us to the mother of all
[Chorus 1]
We are here to care for the garden
The wonder of, birth of, every form most beautiful
Every form most beautiful
[Chorus 1]
III. The Toolmaker
After a billion years
The show is still here
Not a single one of your fathers died young
The handy travelers out of Africa
Little Lucy of the Afar
Gave birth to fantasy
To idolatry
To self destructive weaponry
Enter the god of gaps
Deep within the past
Atavistic dread of the hunted
Enter Ionia
The cradle of thought
The architecture of understanding
The human lust to feel so exceptional
To rule the Earth
Hunger for shiny rocks
For giant mushroom clouds
The will to do just as you'd be done by
Enter history
The grand finale
Enter ratkind
[Chorus 2 (x3)]
Man, he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand
He gave birth to poetry
But one day'll cease to be
Greet the last light of the library
We were here! (x4)
IV. The Understanding
[Spoken]
"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?"
"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one. And that whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
V. Sea-Worn Driftwood
[Instrumental]

Symphonic metal genre is much more challenging than most of the genres because it is so versatile and cover wide range of elements. The performances are more like movies and journeys into another world. The lyrics are poetical, deep, intelligent, including methaphoras etc....that is one reason why Nightwish as pioneer of this genre is so awesome.

I, too, was there. Actually also was the first complete concert/show I have attended, that have ended up on a dvd/cd release. Manowar did release "Call to Arms" live at Provinssirock in 2009 on their "Hell on Earth V" dvd, but that was the only song shot in Seinäjoki. And I did also bought the event shirt from the Tampere show... and "Death to Infidels" Tour shirt from the latter. Among the rest of the Tt-shirts bought from various gigs attended.

Antonio actually did hear BOOING at 20:30 and I was one of those booers. The announcer came on stage about 10 minutes too early in the middle of the outro and did all that "That was Nightwish, good night to you all!" which was extremely annoying and ruined the end of the song. That was of course edited out in the Blue-Ray version. But it was an awesome gig nonetheless and my 10th Nightwish show :P

You are so right! Nightwish does not write to be heavy! They write to tell a song or share an emotion. Their music is dramatically heavy. If you can appreciate Poetry, you can't possibly not love Nightwish. One of the oldest ways for humanity to communicate is through storytelling. That is what is the focus of Nightwish songs.

Greatest Show On Earth, indeed this was! Also one of the greatest songs on Earth by one of the greatest bands on Earth. I really love Tuomas' works! I think we can call him a musical genius. Great was your reaction and review too. And very wise words you said about the band and music itself. Music isn't like sport: football or ice hockey where "you can only cheer/support one team". I also love all kinds of music. I think there's not a musical genre that I can't find a fine song. And in fact, when you can find good things from many different music styles it really tells about you something - you're a musical person! I also find Nightwish music very much cinematic - songs are like a stories you can see as an images or mini movies in your closed eyes.

It's a terrible song off of a pretty mediocre album with a mediocre singer. The song and the album are like the singer. Massively overrated when compared to the great rock music they used to serve, up with better, singers. This is an old band running out of ideas.

You are so right. You have to see them live, seen them several times since they still include their home country in their tours :) This is probably one of the best concerts I've ever been to, it was just magical and extremely important for them because this was actually the first bigger concert for Floor in Finland, they had to impress us so that their natives accept her too. E.g. last December their Decades tour ended in Helsinki land and Tuomas sang The Carpenter, back from the days before even Marco had joined the band and swore never to sing live again, so every now and then they have some special 'treats' stored for us as well. You might be interested that these guys are among those who decided to make metal versions of Christmas songs 15 years ago. Floor has been there too a couple of times, alike e.g. Dee Snyder has made appearance. This has been only in Finland (at least so far), but I think they're planning to take it abroad too. This is from the previous year, 2017. Floor singing 'Oi Jouluyö' (O Holy Night) and a duet with Marco, Ave Maria. The official ones are not on youtube, here's the link to the full concert. Link to the concert: @t Floor: Oi Jouluyö 0.36 Marco & Floor: Ave Maria 0.59.40 And another piece composed by Tuomas, but not by Nightwish - his wife is the singer in this one. A little different, not so heavy, from the Album Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e3d2xLaEqZnZqKg.html

You're so right about the art at all and the metal subgenres heavy or not so much.. Don't know why some people who listen to the heavier subgenres often react in this way. They want to show themselves? Like "Look at me, I listen to a real heavy metal." So what?? Btw I also like Scorpions and Whitesnake, Purple and other old bands. I went through many metal subgenres since I listen to metal, from the heaviest to hard rock. Even hate the whole dividing of subgenres. You just like it or not. Don't care if it's power or thrash or whatever. Really don't understand the hate comments you received about the shirt. It's crazy. Ok, became long. Still I hope for reaction of Nightwish - Song of Myself live from Wacken concert. I suppose you would like it.

You are sooo right! It is so sad when people limit themselves to only listening to one genre of music (well, if that is what they wanna do and they are happy with it, that's fine, but it gets problematic when they start judging other people for liking different things). I wouldn't like to ONLY ever listen to symphonic metal, or only listen to progressive rock, or only listen to EBM or any of the other genres I love. I love them all and that's the beauty of music, it's diverse.

I became fan ofc too and playd all my fathers vinyls trought out. I think this was the thing what made me open minded about music. I love nightwish same reasons as you, it takes you in a jorney in your mind. But i listen all other sub genres too. Hell i even listen rap, techno, trance, pop songs too. Ofc the metal is allways close to my heart more than others but music is art and it belongs to all. To close this here is a finnish saying about this thing. You know what other music you can listen to where a piece lasts 20+ minutes and you don't realise the passage of time? Top-notch classical. Writing songs for a 5-piece band is no easy task. Writing majestic symphonic metal songs for five piece metal band, symphony and choir that keep people mesmerised while they go on for 20+ minutes? That's some next level shit right there.

Thank you for doing this reaction! Really like what you are doing. I think that your channel is the best way of finnish bands to get some "airtime" in Canada \m/ And about this song. For me the ending is the best part of this song, where the verse "Man, he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand, A single grain of sand...." starts and continues to the end. That's the best thing I've heard what Tuomas has written. Truely epic ending... gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it.

"Man, he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand, A single grain of sand...." starts and continues to the end." I think this is from the book The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution from Richard Dawkins.... After Wacken and End of an Era need to start checking some songs from Tampere(EEFMB Tour) Shudder Before the Beautifull, Weak Fantasy, My Walden, The Islander, Elan, Alpenglow(Endless forms are most beautifull album), Stargazers(Oceanborn album).

There were 3 easter eggs at least: That Enter Sandman, yes. Before that, after the bullet shot: Toccata & Fugue by Bach (often linked with world history, even the end of it). The 3rd I'm not sure, it was before Bach - quite silent - maybe it was from the same Bach song. A cembalo is playing there, 17:55 (:56).

@@michaellorke1980 I was thinking there must be something at those times too, becuase all else is small 'quotes'. People often mention just he 'Enter Sandman'. I admit I didn't recognize that exactly, which Bach it was - just that it's one of his best known. I wish all the Classic songs had names, not just the technical description: Most people don't think in codes :) That's why we developed language.

The Wacken performance have a special place in the hearts of NW fans, but the concerts at Wembley and Tampere have a lot going for them. In 2015 they have an album out with songs written for Floor, so there are more new songs on the setlist. Also the setlists for those shows are just different enough to not being repetitive if you watch them both. Tampere is probably the most perfect show they ever did, but the Wembley concert features all 3 symphony length songs (Poet, Ghost love, Greatest show). And playing before a sold out Wembley Arena are not done by just anyone. People love these guys :)

I understand what you guys mean about them playing in a "crappy" venue. I saw them in Mobile on the recent NA tour and like 98% of the back half of the 1st floor seats were empty, and I don't know how much of the 2nd floor/balcony seats were filled because I was in the front center stage section myself. I am glad I was where I was because the actual metal fans all seemed to be in the front sections. There seemed to be a good few older people (by that I mean in their 50's and 60's) that were mainly there out of curiosity. They seemed like people who maybe just go to the theater downtown to see whatever show is happening out of curiosity. I say this because there were a couple of these older guys right behind me and before the show they were talking about the double bass on the drums and were all like "get ready for a loud as hell show". I kept looking back during the show at them and they just kind of stood there watching without any sort of emotion to the show. Also, at first I was worried because when the first song started everyone just stayed sitting in their seats, but when it ended all the people in the front sections stood up to give applause and from there we just didn't sit back down haha. I also understand the whole metal genre "elitism" thing. Nightwish is a pretty accessible band, which is why you see a lot of females that like them; however, I don't see something being more accessible as being a bad thing. Usually music that is more accessible is overly dumbed down and boring, but sometimes, like with Nightwish, the musical writing isn't compromised. I listen to a lot of genres of metal, but there are certain genres I just despise. Even so, I don't hate on people that like those styles because at the end of the day those people typically like all kinds of metal genres as well, and there ends up being some stuff we both like.

Oh, and I forgot to mention there were 3 or 4 long haried dudes in the front row right of center stage that head twirled their hearts out nearly the whole damn show. Those dudes were devoted as hell. There were a couple times when Emppu started chuckling at them because they were so persistently head twirling and when Emppu and Marco would switch sides Marco even got a chuckle or two from them as well. My whole point was that the band still put on such a great show even though they have experienced crowds like in this video many times over. There was only a small bunch of us metal/Nightwish fans at this small theater in southern Alabama and they still put their all into the show. They understood that some or even most of us were seeing them for the first time so they made it as special as possible for us even if there wasn't a lot of us.

29:05-35:08 !!!!!! Beautiful and powerful and very good argument! Art knows no bounds. Your moving story about how you can actually listen to all music (and in this case Nightwish) shows that you are a really good listener. Many people do not use their ears, they already had an opinion before they start listening. That's how they limit themselves. (and that's a shame, for everyone in a wrong T-shirt ;-), but especially for themselves: They remain stupid ) But not your followers !!! May I thank you for this sizzling speech. It thus fits into a policy plan for music and art. Thank you!
