Nightmare Cathedral is a strategy game for 1-4 players, where victory is gained by controlling the map, managing resources, following objectives and selecting when to engage in fast and furious conflicts to gain strategic advantage. Over the course of the game, you will perform actions - and follow the actions of other players - to produce units, build fortifications, maneuver around the map, and spend your followers to climb the ritual track. Throughout the game, a haunting Cathedral will grow in the center of the board, and once it is completed, you will face - and gain the ability to control! - the physical manifestations of nightmares that are released upon the world. Nightmare Cathedral is a game of both strategy and tactics, where finding clever ways to follow your objectives and combining different strategies is the ultimate route to victory.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

I love the Art; love the Theme; love the Size; love the Mechanics, as well. Great table presence (like another area control game, with an HPL theme). Gameplay sounds challenging yet rewarding. Count me in. Hail Board&Dice (I recently received Zapotec as a gift)!

I actually really love the art and the artist this is based on. If I was in a less picky mode than I am now I'd be backing it. Area control games just unfortunately aren't really getting played much nowadays around here 😢

Been eagerly anticipating this for a few months. The art is right up my alley and I was willing to back it on that alone, but Paul Grogan’s playthrough is what really solidified my choice. I’m backer #12!

My Player 2 and I both adore the work of Zdislaw Beksinski, so we've got an eye on this one. I also find it kinda funny comparing the actual Nightmare Cathedral to Scythe's Factory, especially since they're both games utilizing Polish artwork!

Love this art. How would you compare to Age of Rome? Obviously you rated this higher. They seem similar experience but this one's theme and gameplay seems way cooler to me even without you saying the game design is actually good. Really wondering if Age of Rome would make it to the table enough enough now...

I love the art. The gameplay looks intriguing and great with how many possible combinations you can find that vary game to game on a need by need basis. What has me on the fence is a couple of things: 1) Is the board large for the sake of being huge? There is a lot to put down on the table 2) I wish the cathedral was more integrated into gameplay to make it feel satisfying to build it. 3) the board looks just ok. A lot of empty space. What is the developers reason for the board design? Could the art be showcased better and the layout feel more connected to the whole game function? 4) solo mode is still in development. And I tend to back mostly for solo mode right now as I have no one to play with right now. So it's hard to gage it other than trusting a developer with a good track record. Automata solo play can be hit or miss. Archmage by Wizkids was Meh solo mode. Automata in Oros looks a lot more promising. And the developers of Njghtmare Cathedral sound like they're heading in a good direction for the automata, it's still in development and untested. The big question is, is the gameplay strong enough to offset the looks and risks of the unknown? And how much are they adjusting or changing from what we currently see to polish it off?

I ended up backing it. I was nitpicking stuff. The more i looked into it the more I liked it. The more the board made sense. And the solo mode sounds great. And the gameplay looks so good for me. I'm totally gonna want to give all the minis a wash. Especially the cathedral. I'm thinking a creepy decaying grey was for the cathedral.

Nice video, think I would mimic your thoughts if I were sent a prototype. It’s a debate between theme vs mechanics. I agree the mechanics looks intriguing, but for me, I think the theme pushes me too far away to enjoy enough to own. Thanks for the video, helped me seeing someone else have a similar feeling.

I sold my Chaos of the old world when Bloodrage came out. The red god was overpowered, at least in my opinion, and our gaming group would always fight who gets to be that god. Also nobody, but nobody wanted to play the blue god ( sorry for not remembering names). Short answer it didn't feel well balanced at all. Cheers.

Chaos in the Old World is brilliant. Khorne and Tzeentch are truly different(Red god, blue god). Highly unusual game that forces you to think differently from most games. Helps to have a group that is willing to play it repeatedly.

Seems high enough, in alignment with most area control games. Possibly even higher because you only use two nightmares per game.

  • @merccc1

I have a question, you seem to give a ding to those that have luck influence at all. But how are you to stop this in a game that had tableau building with a deck of cards of different powers for example. Almost seems unavoidable unless you maybe tear away all fun and unique abilities and only have one viable strategy. Just seems part of the very nature of the feature/mechanic/genre. Only thing I can think of is having the ability to pay to search top cards of the deck and then discarding unused to the bottom maybe, but do so at a cost of currency or something like that? Seems very narrow. Think the luck of the draw and how you work with it is just par for the course almost.

At first I was like "omg, game with THOSE graphics". I'm Polish, of course I felt this would be awesome to have this game. I backed in first minutes and pulled back today. After some thinking I decided, that I'm not really into this kind of game and figures are not enough to draw me for real. I'm not going to look at them outside of playing and after checking what was available I was like "meh, I wouldn't play it more than 3 times". My husband was very uninterested as well, so I guess this means pass for me
