I think what the story is is the Landlord got fed up with the 404 person since everyone hates them I'm assuming for the disability. and they hid the body in the fridge? and the ghost haunted the other tenants by luring them maybe ass the fridge ghost you see in ending 2? hence the random jump to the landlord, he notices all other tenants arent paying and goes to investigate and meets Fridge Ghost. while ending 1 the delivery guy finds the corpse and brings justice to the ghost.

Plus if you’ve seen other lets players prospective you can leave Room 404 before the door shuts in Ending 1 to see all the victims of killing looking through the window. Though Yukichi is nowhere in sight unless you peek in the right spot to see the fridge slowly opening. Besides if someone has a disability then they would need a lot of money to cope with this.

Okay, after reading other comments, here's what I think. Kouhei had a disability that allowed him to get welfare checks. The neighbours hated him because of the disabilities. The landlord took advantage of him and made him pay almost 3x more than the other tenants. Based on the mother's letters, assuming it isn't just blind love for her son, he really was a kind guy. Even in his diaries, he tried to get along with the others but they were assholes. Shame. One day, the landlord killed him. Maybe he was tired of other people complaining, or maybe he just wanted those sweet welfare checks. Or maybe the entire building colluded to kill him, who knows? Anyway, he was stuffed in the fridge, probably so the smell doesn't leak out. The landlord installed cameras to monitor the house. The dog was left outside. So now, Kouhei is a vengeful ghost. He died unfairly, and what do ghosts do? They get revenge. I think Kouhei killed the other tenants, judging by the fact there was still blood in their respective apartments. The other ghosts can't touch anything, which is why the delivery guy was made to do things for them. Fixing up a bed frame, getting the baby... There was that one girl who gave us cat food, but that cat food was given by Kouhei. Maybe that's why she could touch it? Or maybe she's not dead since we didn't specifically see her body (I think, hard to make out). In ending 2, the delivery man got lead to the apartment and quite possibly died. The landlord who has been watching, decided he needed to check tf was going on. This is where we see that the tenants haven't been paying their rents. He goes to room 404 and was predictably murdered. Thus completing Kouhei's revenge. In ending 1, we found all letters. Just like in other Chilla's Art games, finding "all X" leads you to a good end. Here we fed the dog some good bottled water. They likely haven't drank anything since Kouhei died. The neighbours would want nothing to do with a dog left by the disabled man. The action of giving the dog water made him spare us since Kouhei believes anyone who loves animals aren't bad people. Therefore he lets us find his body, and reports to the police. That's my take on it at least. I do believe that we could probably get more info if we could read some of the papers that were left in Japanese, but oh well.

Japan has a history of mistreating disabled people, to the point there was a 2016 massacre when a guy killed a lot of disabled people on a clinic because he thought they're leeching the economy and that would save Japan. They never revealed the victims names, not out of respect for the victims, but because their families don't want people to know they had disabled relatives.

This game really had confused me with it's endings. The way I interpreted the ending was that the landlord killed Kouhei and shoved him into his fridge. (Was it because Kouhei was disliked by everyone for being different or was it because Kouhei didn't have much money to bring to the landlord since he was on wellfare?) Then, as a ghost filled with depression and rage, he became a fridge ghost and killed everyone who was mean to him, which was the whole apartment complex. With the ending where you were nice to his dog, he decided to let you go because you were the only one to show him any sort of kindness by giving his dog water (which he can't do himself since he's been put on ice.)

Actually I interpreted this a lot differently. I don't think Kouhei went on a killing spree when he was alive - from his diary entries and his mum's letters it seems he is too nice a fellow for that. I think he died or killed himself due to depression and his spirit started haunting the building and those who had wronged him. Also just a little detail that Manly missed because it was written in Japanese - it shows in the rent booklet that the landlord was actually charging Kouhei a much higher rent than the other tenants. Maybe it was due to all the complaints the other tenants had about Kouhei, or perhaps the landlord was thinking he could extort Kouhei out of some of that welfare money. It is possible the landlord actually killed Kouhei and hid the body in the fridge - both to stop the complaints while also continuing to get Kouhei's welfare cheques. This explains the endings. Ending 2 has Kouhei's spirit using the deliveryman to draw the landlord into room 404 (the landlord didn't want the deliveryman finding the body) and kill him . While in Ending 1 Kouhei lets the deliveryman flee after seeing his corpse, knowing that the deliveryman was sympathetic (going out of his way to read all his mum's letters) and would go to the police to bring the landlord to justice. That was my interpretation anyway, but I guess the game is open-ended enough for people to form their own conclusions about the story.

So here's my interpretation of events, based on this playthrough. So, the ghost in question was a disabled man. Couldn't tell you to what extent given that the welfare papers at the end were in Japanese, but I'm willing to bet something mental or some sort of unseen chronic illness. This is assumed by the fact that our ghost has some sort of stigma with being on welfare with the whole "if you have time to help get a real job" diary page, but for all I know the disability could have been more obvious given the other diary page of the mother "treating him like a germ." At that point, I believe, the Landlord killed our ghost. The reason I believe that is from the strange words from the good ending, where the landlord's book was used as evidence against him, allowing him to be arrested. Perhaps he was grumpy about being stuck with a welfare tenant that was causing complaints. Either way, from there I can see one of two options. 1: Everyone save the landlord was dead, having been killed by the ghost. The entire deliveryman part of the game was in a ghost apartment, none of the deliveries were real. Ending 2 was the ghost taking out its wrath on the deliveryman (who may be wearing a bodycam) and the landlord. 2: The deliveries were real, and the apartment has always been weird and haunted since the death. This is shown by the NEET's paranoia and the girl's weird behavior, affecting both of their lives. In Ending 2 the ghost finally pulls the trigger and kills all their abusers, along with the deliveryman and the landlord. Ending 1 in either possibility was the ghost being calmed by the letters and realizing that they were loved by their family, despite being surrounded by abusers in the apartment. In ending 1, the ghost sees the deliveryman as an ally and lets them find the body and the evidence and call the police, ending with the landlord getting arrested. Assuming everyone else isn't dead, the others move out... Or they are dead. Who knows?

What I'm getting is that Kohei's neighbors are ableist shit heads. His landlord probably killed him and stuffed his body in the freezer. Ending 2 ( the first ending Manly got) : he became a onryō in death, and took his revenge on those who wronged him. The land lord was reviewing security tapes, as his tenants have seemingly disappeared with our paying him. Ending 1( the second ending Manly got): the delivery guy's act of kindness to the dog (likely Kohei's, and likely an emotional support dog, or a service animal) allowed Kohei to have hope there are good people in the world. His spirit guided the delivery guy to his body. Which lead to the whole cover up being discovered, and justice being served (landlord in jail, the neighbors are likely to have a bad reputation when the story goes public).

I felt like it is the landlord who kills the residents. Kohei is kind hearted as evidenced by 1) his mother's letters, 2) the way he write his diary, and 3) the dog. While in Ending 2 seems to imply Kohei was killing people at his house. The mom's letters and the welfare document (35:10) mentions of a disability. Not sure if it is physical or not, assuming it is indeed physical, it is unlikely he is capable of killing. Plus, in Ending 1, going by the flow of the plot, it is Kohei who was inside the fridge. It is possible that Kohei suicided after killing all resident, but suicide in fridge doesn't seem logical to me. In my humble opinion, if anything, a cadaver inside a fridge imply an attempt at concealing a murder. I suspect the landlord is the murderer. Why? The landlord was watching videotape. I don't think he is watching the deliveryman's experience, it is illogical that there is a videotape like that. So why else is he watching a videotape? I was reminded of some stories about how landlords likes to install camera at their rental rooms for voyeurism. If it is the case for this game, then the landlord is most likely a ill minded criminal willing to kill. Killing the resident including Kohei, and hide their cadavers inside room 404. Furthermore, landlords usually have copies of key with them, which makes murder attempts on their tenants much more easier I guess. A side note, the tenants payment list (28:55) in Ending 2 might have some important information that revealed the landlord's intention, which unfortunately I can't quite understand anything. Same goes the previously mentioned welfare document. I see the keyword of 精神(Mental) at last row, Kohei most likely have a mental disabilities instead. Lastly, this theory doesn't explain a lot of thing. For one, I didn't take into consideration the supernatural part of stuff. I try to answer the question of who is the killer. The basis is that all resident's death is caused by human being instead of supernatural. Assuming Kohei somehow died in his home and become a youkai or sort, he might have went wild first and kills the residents. As I said in the side note, the keyword mental mentioned in Kohei's welfare document probably means that Kohei mental disabilities is related to insanity and is a plausible explanation for Kohei being the culprit. Similarly, the payment list might just means nothing as well. The whole theory part about landlord's voyeurism is honestly too far-stretched. In any case where Kohei is the killer, then the landlord actually simply just want Kohei to pay rent and was thus killed by going to his room... I hope that was not the case cause that's hella comedic. I'd love to seem some discussion about Chilla's Art game, they are the master of Japanese horror realized in indie game. The plot is often ambiguous and mysterious. Personally I like to see this kind of tragedy twist, where the monster turns out to be victim. The real threat wasn't the man-devouring fictional monster, but the human that is grounded in reality. This might caused me to have a certain bias in framing the landlord. Feel free to debunk my theory here.

I was just mentioning on someone else's comment, I was thinking the motive might be Kohei's welfare checks. I do like the voyeurism thing you've brought up, and that actually makes me lean more toward Kohei killing himself. The landlord sees it on his monitor and realizes he can keep collecting those welfare checks for himself. That's why you find the 404 mailbox key hidden in a planter instead of somewhere inside the room. I'm guessing Kohei has Down Syndrome, honestly, and that's why people keep calling him disgusting for seemingly no reason. Their treatment of him caused him to slip into depression, and he killed himself. The voyeuristic landlord saw this on his monitor and went to hide the body in a big fridge so he could keep the welfare checks for himself rather than deal with trying to find a new tenant. He might even have thought, since Kohei is disabled, that not even the mom would miss him. That seems like more than enough to make this place haunted. I don't even think anyone else died, at least in Ending 1. Maybe Kohei's vengeful ghost kills them in Ending 2. But I definitely don't think they died before Kohei did.

yes, yes, i thought the same thing.. all evidence was pointed to the landlord since in the ending 2, i can see the delivery man came into 404 (kohei's room) and the landlord found out through the camera. he's panicking. and then, he rushed into that room to cast out the 'intruder'. why? because it's where the 'tragedy' happened and supposed to not be found by anyone else. instead of meeting the delivery man in the room, the landlord realized that he was lured out by the 'ghost' of kohei and he got his revenge (by killing him). paused by the credit roll. after that, it turns out the delivery man was blank out and seeing 'things' during the process. by the "blank out" and "seeing things" i meant is something like, 'the ghost will tell you the truth" type of thing in the horror movies. because when that occured, he still got the 404's package on his possession. confused. he turned around and saw aikichi (the dog) standing right beside of him, thirsty. also the dog was chasing kohei's ghost so, it would be more make any sense. when he came back to kohei's room for the second time, he found the fridge filled with the body. he left the crime scene immediately and report this to the police. the police, arrest the landlord. and we got the first ending. that's a quick recap for what happened in this game from my point of view. but, what i don't understand is why the landlord do the killing? i don't find any motives while the story progressing. also, it can be another way around. kohei was actually the murderer. he did the killing for the residents (since he only have mental disability not physically) the landlord was the one who took the blame and stop kohei by his own hand. of course, he can't go to the police and told them what just happened because they will arrest him immediately. since, he was the only one who still alive at this point. so, he kept this for himself until the delivery man come and changes everything. the motives why kohei kill everyone? because everyone hates him, include the landlord who seems took advantage on his condition. and in the second ending, i see him after luring the landlord back to his room, he killed him back. and again, there is a plot hole in this theory. if he is the murderer why the dog seems very fond of him? i can see in the first ending, aikichi chase kohei's ghost until the delivery man came back to his room for the second time only to found where kohei's body was hidden. i believe people who loved by an animal would never hurt a fly. so, he wasn't capable by killing people too. well, i guess this where it ends. p.s: correct me if i'm wrong.

What about the 506 apartment? The noises are so creepy, like someone is tide up and trying to scream with their mouth covered. And, that's not all, those same sounds are from the creepy guy staring at you after reading the cat note and from the guy who runs from the dog, so random and mysterious haha. And, what about the guy knocking at the window at the apartment 402 or 403 (I can't remember whit it was), he has red eyes, just like the corpse in the fridge. And the baby? When you receive the baby again in the elevator, the baby is literally white, and if you see it in the inventory is not 'Toddler' anymore, is '...', like is dead or something. Maybe most of the things I said are because of recycling models, but why keep the scream noise then? Idk, this game has a lot of unknowns.

@@gayfrenchsheep Great theory. I didn't think about the monetary value of the welfare check. I just thought it is an explanation of Kohei's condition and how he survives on his own. Your interpretation of Ending 1 is on point as well, it make sense because it is unlikely an entire apartment of people got murdered, and no one in the neighborhood suspect a thing. Another possible evidence is those delivery packages. Dead people don't order online delivery... do they? So unless all the corpses and ghost baby is metaphysical/parallel world stuff, they must have died at some point in Ending 2. It is also worth mentioning in that ending, there are only 3 visible corpse I found in this video, perhaps I missed some, or they are in the bag. I saw the NEET guy, the girl, and the drunk man. So, the girl should be alive previously, but died in Ending 2... I think the deliveryman directly witnessed the killing of the girl? Bloody substances were dropping from the ceiling. Did she got drag up and killed while the deliveryman is making the bed frame...? Her room number is 305, somewhat close to the 404 on top, perhaps.

Reading the comments I think it's pretty much explained. Kohei moves to a new apartment and like his mother said, tried to make friends, but it didn't work out and everyone hated him, or maybe he just thought they hated him-his mom did say he had a habit of thinking pessimistically, so mild rudeness from his neighbors was interpreted as them hating his existence. The comments said it could've been because of welfare checks and that he was disabled so the landlord kills Kohei and stuffed him in the fridge, collecting money. I think Kohei may have been the deliveryman and didn't realize he was dead. Explains why the tenants he delivered to were the same people in all his letters. And if he was physically disabled why the stairs were blocked, because he lived on the 4th floor but was literally unable to make that trip and had to use the elevator. Then when the world goes red and ladders appear he remembers that he knows the tenants, and the "jumpscare" is the landlord killing him, the last thing he saw. Or maybe the deliveryman is possessed/guided by Kohei, (see the world through his eyes so it still fits), which is why you find the letters, his corpse, and call the police. Maybe Kohei reached out to all the tenants and they just thought it was paranormal activity so in the bad ending, when you miss all the clues he's just like, "fine I'll do it myself" and just kills everyone.

  • @jaaaayco5256

i think kohei was probably murdered by the landlord. during the bit when you switch to the landlord's perspective, you see that one tenant paper, and it looks as though one of the sums was different from the rest. either they were overcharging kohei and he found out, or kohei wasn't able to make his ends meet and the landlord murdered him. it would explain why the landlord has video tapes in 404 - monitoring and making sure nobody goes in. hell, maybe kohei's ghost led the neighbours to the body, and the landlord had to take care of them. honestly idk, i'm just theorizing, but i do like the atmosphere a lot. and props to delivery person for surviving the whole way through (i think)

  • @changednamelit

I agree with the first part, but I don't think the landlords killed the rest because the killing styles are different(also the others hated Kouhei, they wouldn't even get NEAR his apartment to find out he got mirdered). If the landlord was the one who stuffed Kouhei's body into the fridge, then it shows he's meticulous in hiding the body, in a place where the smell wouldn't leak out. The other people were killed brazenly, especially the beheaded body of the drunk man. If the landlord had killed them, he wouldn't make such a big mess.

  • @jaaaayco5256

@@changednamelit yanno what? that's a good point actually. and it would make sense for kouhei to take his revenge post mortem, especially if he realized they hated him so much they weren't even fazed by him literally dying. and that would explain why the best ending involves the delivery man finding all of kouhei's notes and letters. since the delivery man understood what kouhei was going through and what happened to him, kouhei's spirit allowed them to discover the truth of the apartments.

I think Kohei killed himself because he was mistreated and fell into depression, and when the landlord noticed that he hasn't paid his bills, he goes to check and sees the dead body. Scared and panicking, instead he just shoves the dead body in the fridge and doesnt tell anyone. Then, he notices that he can take advantage of kohei's welfare checks so he does. He places cameras in Kohei's room to make sure noone comes in and discovers the body. I think when we see a bunch of dead bodies in the room is because either people went to check on Kohei or Kohei lured them in as a ghost and killed them one by one including the delivery man and the landlord at the end. Or people went to check on Kohei and the landlord saw it on the monitor and kills anyone who discovers the tragic secret. So when the landlord sees the delivery man in Kohei's room he goes to kill him but when he arrives he instead gets killed by Kohei. As for the other ending, I'm guessing Kohei didnt turn into a vengeful ghost because you found the letter that was locked away in his mailbox. Someone theorized that the landlord took his mailbox keys so that he can further fall into depression and then kills himself to take advantage of the welfare check or he could have done that from the start by stealing Kohei's welfare checks. So when he finds Kohei's dead body his only thought was to hide the body because he has been stealing Kohei's welfare checks and doesnt want to be arrested. So now Kohei looks at us as an ally because we also gave his dog some water. The more letters from his mother that we found the more peaceful he becomes i guess? So in that ending, he lets you discover his body and contact the authorities so that he can get revenge on the landlord.

I think the implication is that the neet was either: A) Commit suicide following pressure from his neighbor and his taking revenge. Or most likely. B) Murdered by the Landlord, each package in the "shadow building" correspond to wrong caused by the neighbor, the only wrong "missing" being the Landlord, whose position is next to the elevator where the murder-jumpscare happen, possibly being linked to the wrong of the landlord. This ties with the Landlord going to check in on the 404 appartement, coli g to the crime scene only to find doom at the hand of the ghost who possessed the fridge in which the Landlord put the corpse. This would also explain why the landlord is the last victim shown (either last killed), as he is responsible for the vengeful nature of the ghost. As to why the Landlord would do that, the tape imply that he might have been spying on people, and one of the letter talk about suspicion of a stalker, as well as elements not going right, which could be easily thought to refer to the ghost, except at that time, the guy isn't dead. The sealing point is the dog, we saw the dog of the murdered neet, chasing down a suspicious stalker at first sight, showing aggressivity against this stranger. This likely the landlord stalking the delivery man. At that point, he isn't aware but the ghost is close to getting his revenge which happen in ending 2. Ending 1 has the ghost not trapping and killing the delivery man, and imply that the delivery man realize what happened once the ghost show its corpse inside the fridge. Delivery take the landlord book as proof of the landlord culpability and police take him in. Which is implied but the apartment loosing his landlord. As to why the landlord did that to the neet, the neet being alone was likely an easy target and his dog roaming around probably worried the landlord further which took in his hand to murder the neet. Iirc, It also explain why there is blood dripping from the ceiling just below the floor the neet was savagely murdered and became a vengeful ghost. (A, suicide option would follow the same logic, except instead of a murder, landlord drove the neet to a suicide) C) not really a third option but a variant of B, possibly neighbors where also in on the neet murder, or feigned ignorance, leading to them being target by the revenge. But B is the most likely, as it ties with the "vengeful fridge ghost thing" and explain why his corpse ended in piece in the fridge.

Japan has a strong work ethic. It's a collectivist culture. Everyone must contribute in some way for the good of the whole. If you don't, your looked down on. If you were disabled but contributed, say, a job injury, that's a different story. Because of that ethic, though, they don't have an economy crippling welfare system. You have to be REALLY messed up to get on welfare over there. The US could learn a thing or two from Japan concerning welfare considering the sheer amount of lazy sponges on it soaking up my, and every other hard working persons, tax dollars.

@@smithsmith1956 About 12.6 percent of the US budget last year went to welfare and medicaid, and about 16.7 percent to Social Security. Not to mention that both food stamps and welfare (which are both generally temporary) generate more economic activity than they cost. It is absolutely not worth killing or indirectly killing impoverished, disabled, and elderly citizens, and anyone who gets sick or injured and doesn't have good enough insurance either through their job or paid for out-of-pocket (which is basically only realistic for the rich) to cover it. Also you vastly overestimate how easy it is to get on benefits and seem to be buying into debunked 80s Welfare Queen bullshit. This mass epidemic of lazy parasites living high on the hog on the $700 to $1,400 a month (i.e. barely enough to survive, if even that) is an imaginary one with no evidence to back it up. And even if that weren't the case, wanting to essentially kill off the disabled and elderly just to potentially stick it to someone who's cheating the system without being part of the top 1 percent seems comically vindictive and pointless. Not to mention that you're not paying for "other people." You're paying for yourself and your family if you or they end up crippled, or disabled, or become elderly (which is inevitable if you don't die first).

The first ending (not the 2nd) has the delivery person take evidence to the police, they investigate the apartment. They find the corpse, make that apartment a crime scene. The landlord is a prime suspect and is charged with the murder. Justice is served and the deceased finally rests in peace.
