    Honestly, Chilla's Art games are amazing. At some point, they stop being horror because of the ambience, or the jumpscares, or the ghosts in some of them, and start being horror because some of these things DO happen. The girl getting stalked at a coffee shop, the teacher that preys on his female students, the girl who doesn't want to go home, the girl whose mother ends her life, the abusive neighbours who mistreat a disabled tenant... They are actual things that can happen, that DO happen, and that's whats scary and horrific in Chilla's Art games. I don't think there are many, if any, devs that can really show the horror of everyday life and the many tragedies that happen in it. Mad props to them, and thank you Manly for playing them and always showing us everything the games have to offer!!

    @JN-so6wtwell it’s kind of difficult to have very expressive characters in horror games. Most of the time that it’s been tried, it’s usually been the focal point of criticism for said game. Also exploring the experience of going back to school and having to deal with peers and having your abuser around is a little too much for the scope of this game. I think it would also be hard to explore such an experience through a video game. The only way to get the consumers invested in what happens afterwards is to get the consumer to like the character. As previously mentioned, very few horror games dare go for expressive protags. Those aspects are usually left for less interactive media i.e. books and film. I also think Chilla’s art are more so going for the intense dread once one finds themselves in a horrible situation with a direct and explicit threat, like having to hide from your stalker. They’ve never really tried to explore the more implicit, indirect but always present threat that comes afterwards if the stalker/abuser is not convicted. I just don’t see those two aspects fitting neatly together in one single game.

  • @alfredandersson875

    @alfredandersson875

    @JN-so6wtalso disagree about them “lazily using women as 1-dimensional punching bags”. This isn’t a really story driven game. Sure there’s some story there in the background but it’s not about the characters, it’s about the player. I would totally agree with that point and the rest of what you wrote if this game was a story driven game about a female protagonist with an actual character, but that’s just not really feasible in the types of games Chilla’s art make: short horror games about a, usually, normal situation going very dark, very quickly. Very little time to develop much story in that timeframe.

  • @KirbyIsCute

    Yeah, those real life horror games scare me more than the supernatural ones. I remember back in my teens, I did some shopping and casually noticed a guy at the checkout line with me. As I walked outside for awhile to get to the bus stop, I thought someone was trying to talk to me. It was the same guy and he was walking beside me a little close. Didn't think much of it and thought it was a coincidence but thought "Was he trying to talk to me? Nah." Then I got to the bus stop and waited for a certain bus (not knowing at the time I was at the wrong bus stop which turned out to be a good thing). I again noticed the guy which I wouldn't think much of but he was standing kinda close. There were a lot of people out at this time so when he had his back turned, I walked through a crowd of people and stood on the other end. He would always end up near me no matter how many times I did it, even trying to talk to me like asking for the time. He started to talk to a guy who was a friend or something so I walked away and turned around a street corner, walked for a distance, then turned around and waited. Sure enough, he came around the corner but he stopped when he saw me standing ways away, glaring at him, knowing I was on to him. He walked away but I didn't take any chances and went to get a cab to drive me home - not before looking back to make sure the man wasn't anywhere in sight. Since then I've been paranoid of being followed. I shudder to think if I waited at the right bus stop and got on it so that guy could get on it too just to follow me home. Sorry for the long rant. Guess this game brought out that memory. *Edit* Thank you for everyone's comments. It has been years and I've been doing okay though I act more aware of my surroundings when I go somewhere alone. I've learned that stalking can happen to anyone, even men, and sometimes it could be someone they know. So I find it scary how anyone can go through this.

    To be fair on the point about the coach going all the way to the karaoke place to get you, it seems that the coach generally goes after you once you become a 'threat' to him, as in discovering his secret. Otherwise he'd go for Moeko. In the initial ending, Moeko calls you in a panic. He may have been paranoid that you had learned his secret, and went to "take care of" you with that in mind. ...Doesn't explain why everyone disappears from the building at that point but oh well

It is pretty funny to think she was so hard-pressed about her food she barged into the employees-only room like a Karen but also couldn't care less about her friend's distress, food above friends I guess lol As for the drink and fries, I'm pretty sure Manly could've chosen not to eat them? That ending where you just go out together and sing karaoke is a nice option, and I love when secret paths like that are put into games, where you can just avoid the entire conflict of the game right from the start, like Far Cry 4, but in this case, that doesn’t really solve the problem. Their coach is still a part of their daily lives, and it probably only delays the conflict by a short time. Maybe he’s not likely to find them alone at night again, but other students are still at risk. I think the ending where you find all the evidence and turn him in without either girl getting attacked is the best one.

    Most of my nightmares involve me being chased by a man and trying to hide in small spaces like closets and small rooms, and under tables and boxes, and as you wait down the timer the first time you realize how agonizingly long a minute can feel if you're counting the seconds and trying to avoid someone. I've also dealt with other topics dealt with in the game, so I found this one more stressful as opposed to some of their more supernatural ones. Chilla's Art seems to pretty accurately depict the fears and "horrors" that happen commonly to young women. If you fall in that audience it's likely that the games strike a different chord with you than if you are male, though Manly does a good job of explaining things and being pretty gender impartial in terms of the scares. this is the best one so far out of chillas art. due to its new interesting concepts and it’s gameplay, but the story most of all. this game hits so close to home, specially for young girls. i had multiple encounters with people telling me they had creepy teachers or men in their life’s that felt destructed from them. this may be the less scariest, but it’s the most realistic and shocking. the ending where MC goes with the coach shook me to my core. the last line of saying that she hopes there is few people like her in the world, is so fucking sad. not just knowing the context, it’s disturbing, but also knowing this is the case for so many girls. and it really struck a chord in me because it is relatable, especially as a victim. this is the most depressing, yet poignant out of the chillas collection. i’m really glad that this studio is bringing light onto topics like this, and showing how horrifying some people go through dealing with stalkers and perpetrators. i hope they make more of this in the future!

    Now I want a Horror Karaoke Rhythm game. Like, with vocal control. And the point of the game is to maintain score, while also not getting caught. Sometimes, you might mess up because of a jump scare. Or maybe you have to hide, and have to stay quiet, so you automatically fail any notes during that time. It's basically be a version of FNAF, but without any of the power management mechanics...
