I’ve been working in a Level 4 NICU for the last 2.5 years and I have looked into becoming a Neonatal NP. But I am not a fan of the nursing education model. I would much rather pursue the medical model as a physician or PA. Thank you for making this video. It gives me a little more assurance that PA is probably the better route for me to go. I want to advance my practice, but still work in the NICU.

Glad you found it helpful and reassuring. Just be prepared for a bit of an uphill battle or be flexible with region of the country you want to live in. Of course, it should be easier if you are already in the NICU world. Start networking, go to conferences, talk with the pharmaceutical/device reps. Let people know your plan and get feedback for what may be possible in your area. I wish you all the best and thanks for watching!

The Neonatal NP and other specialized NP programs go with medical model and no nursing model like you think. For this Neonatal specialty NP is probably better route, but if you want to work in other places then PA is okay and you can do neonatal fellowship like this guest suggested. Nice Video

I would be too emotional to work in the NICU. It would be so hard to keep my face dry 😭. I think I’ll stay in EMS. Another thing: I’m sure people would make good money working in this area of medicine if they got the emotional guts to do it. I wish them well. I wouldn’t be able to do it because I get extremely emotionally attached to babies. I would be crying everyday working in the NICU.

I know! I’m sure there are lots of joyful moments in the NICU, but I’m sure there are many heart wrenching moments as well. Definitely takes a special kind of person to work in the NICU!

Thank you so much for making this video for us! I want to be a NICU PA and I was starting to doubt because I would ask nurses if any PAs worked in nicu and they would tell me no, but this video helped me understand PAs are needed in level 3 and 4

I’m so glad you found this video, and that it is helpful to you! As mentioned in the video, it is much harder to work in the NICU as a PA, but certainly possible. I think that networking would help you tremendously to be able to meet other NICU PAs and learn open positions at hospitals that employee PAs in the NICU. I have another video that may be helpful to you in that regard. It is a video on networking and focuses mainly on people looking to become an MSL, but the practical steps on how to network apply to any situation. I will put the link below. I wish you all the best on your career journey! Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
