It is a great take. But I hate the break the news to coach Saban, people haven't cared about bowl games in years. Yes the playoffs have diminished the value of the bowl games, but they weren't worth all that much to begin with. You want to dramatically increase the value of the bowl games? Simple. Reduce them. Reduce the number significantly. Instead of 40 bowl games, have 8 bowl games. Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Gator Bowl, Outback Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Las Vegas Bowl I guess. Right there, 11 games including the 3 playoff games. Scarcity. Then you might actually get more fans at them other than the parents of the players. The alumni might even spend some money around New Year's Day to actually attend those games. They will care because they will be special.

Oh, same here. I love Bowl season but he is 100% right. You don't have to go back too many years where it would be unheard of to even think about setting out a bowl game. Now it's almost fashionable to set out. How long before a player decides to set out a playoff game? After all it's all about supposedly keeping yourself safe for the draft. How much is it worth to a player to say he won a playoff game? 1, 2, 10 million? That's what this is all about, players afraid to play their last game for fear of getting injured and costing them money. Injuries happen in playoff games as well so why not set them out if that's your goal?

Saban nailed it....This "playoff" system has destroyed tradition and has attempted to make college football the same as the NFL. Now the bowl games that are not part of the playoffs are merely exhibition scrimmage games like the NFL Pro Bowl. Alabama vs Michigan sounds great, but when half the starters don't play, what's the point? If this playoff system is expanded, a lot of the bowl games are going to fade away and soon all we're going to have is playoffs/championship game...just like the NFL. It's sad....Could you even imagine a player walking up to Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes, Paul Bryant, or Ara Parseghian and asking if they could sit out the bowl game because they might get hurt and impact their draft chances? It's sad...very, very sad. The days of Bo yelling "The TEAM, The TEAM, The TEAM" are long gone and doubtful to ever return.

  • @lukelombardo3671

This is why I don’t fully support expanding the playoff to 8 teams. In ruins college football. If there is 8 teams with an equal shot at the championship in makes the regular season less important. A 2 loss team should not be the national champion even if they win the 8 team tournament. Also it will ruin the bowl system more than it already is. I like bowl games. It’s nice to see your team play an extra game, sure it might not be for a national championship, but it is still important to win. The subjectivity of college football is what makes it college football. Keep the same system we have, except have the only teams who get in the playoff be conference champions, that will essentially add that extra round everyone wants.

Without taking an overall position on playoffs, here, I will say this: growing up, there wasn't a bowl game more esteemed, in my estimation, than the Grandaddy of 'em All, the Rose Bowl. It was just really exciting: the Pac 12 champion played the Big Ten champion and you either took care of business and got in or you didn't and you didn't. Well no offense to Wisconsin this year, but I think it's quite silly how they lost at least fairly convincingly in the Big Ten title game and are basically backpedaling into the Rose Bowl. This sort of thing would not have happened back in the day and honestly, it has lowered the aforementioned esteem of this tradition-rich game.

There was nothing wrong with the BCS. It just ruffled people's feathers when two SEC teams (who were far and away the two best teams in the country) got to play in the BCS title game in 2011. It used to be the 3rd or 4th team complaining about being left out, now its just going to be the 5th or 6th ranked team. The playoff solves nothing. The BCS should have never been done away with.

Who knows? Maybe that guy will open some eyes of scouts on the big stage of the bowl game? So, since the earlier historic significance of the Rose, Citrus, and Sugar is lost, why not let them be a chance for the bench players who have contributed so much to the growth of the Mr Sundays to have a chance to shine. Nick Saban’s wisdom and work ethic is why he is the greatest coach in college football. A example of his wisdom is Jalen Hurts. Coach Saban’s decision to start Tua over Hurts was perfect because it allowed Tua to grow immediately. Hurts who has incredible athletic ability, needed someone to devote a unmeasurable amount of time to work with him to refine his passing game so he can get to the next level. Oklahoma is the perfect place for hurts to get trained and polished. Lincoln Riley is the perfect coach for Jalen Hurts in that area. The way this life of Jalen Hurts has unfolded has the potential to be one of the greatest football stories of all time. Jalen Hurts has his opportunity laid out before him to showcase his ability in front of the world. Oklahoma now has a defense “not great” but good enough to win. It is all on the shoulders of Jalen Hurts to win or lose in this year’s playoffs. Has he been refined enough to lead Oklahoma to a title? Can he take control of Lincoln Riley’s offense and make the play’s needed to score and control the play clock? Can he handle the pressure of the media who is waiting to chew him up if he fails? Jalen Hurts is facing the first opportunity of two to prove to the world he can play in the NFL. If he fails he probably will not be given much opportunity to play QB in the NFL. This years playoff was scripted for Jalen Hurts. Personally, I hope he plays his best 2 games and shines brighter than ever before. It also worked out well for the best that Bama didn’t make the playoff this year. If Bama would have got in Jalen wouldn’t have this opportunity. Also, Bama needed the break so they can show him support and encouragement. This years playoff is far beyond schools and states pride. It’s about one mans trials and tribulations to overcome and make his dream come true. It is interesting that 3 of the 4 QBs in this years playoffs are transfers and they all have similar stories. However this Jalen Hurts story is by far the richest of the 3. He learned discipline, hard work and leadership at Bama by the best coach in college football. He has learned offensive schemes, theology and mechanics at Oklahoma. Coach Saban’s decision is what writes this story and what gives it the potential to be one of the greatest of all time. Go Jalen - Roll Tide!!!

With a 12 Team playoff the importance of Bowl Games has DEFINITELY diminished. Viewing vise it’s better for fans:11 Playoff games to watch and week 10-12 games with 2 loss teams before so much more interesting. But on the upside Conference Championships are so much more interesting! As they are a direct path to the playoffs. I’m definitely looking forward to watching the playoffs next season. But for the players in the playoffs they are more likely to be injured and for the ones NOT trying to get Drafted the will miss a serious amount of school. As the teams in the playoffs especially the top 4 and 2 teams will probably be practicing until mid to late January.

Seed the playoff bracket to ensure no rematches occur unless the teams win their way into the finals. With this solution EVERY game counts.

I totally agree with this diminishing other bowl games, however I still think it’s worth it. Because as a competitor your goal is to win a national championship and be the best, and a playoff system allows teams that chance. I think back to the 2010 TCU team who went undefeated and won the rose bowl. They won every single game and still didn’t have a chance to play for a national title. The playoffs give teams a chance to play for what they really want, and if that diminishes the value of bowl games then so be it
