Lyrics:
Come sail your ships around me
And burn your bridges down
We make a little history, baby
Every time you come around
Come loose your dogs upon me
And let your hair hang down
You are a little mystery to me
Every time you come around
We talk about it all night long
We define our moral ground
But when I crawl into your arms
Everything, it comes tumbling down
Come sail your ships around me
And burn your bridges down
We make a little history, baby
Every time you come around
Your face has fallen sad now
For you know the time is nigh
When I must remove your wings
And you, you must try to fly
Come sail your ships around me
And burn your bridges down
We make a little history, baby
Every time you come around
Come loose your dogs upon me
And let your hair hang down
You are a little mystery to me
Every time you come around
Come sail your ships around me (Come sail your ships around me)
And burn your bridges down (And burn your bridges down)
We make a little history, baby (We make a little history, baby)
Every time you come around (Every time you come around)

Today, or actually yesterday, was 9 months since my husband, John Giakoumakis, passed. I haven't listened to the song since then. I have been in shock this whole time til about a month ago when the pain began hitting, HARD. It was like running into a brick wall. Then I would start singing this song to myself and cry, even writing this I'm tearing up. I want to thank all of you for your kind words and emails. This song means even more to me now because of those of you who comforted me.

This song has so many different meanings to so many people, but there's always a melancholy beauty to it. Hits me right in the feels. I'm not surprised this song brings up all the emotions in you; it's just that kind of song. Hope you're doing ok these days.

I've come to realise that, as perfect as song like this seems to me, it is not universal. Cave is speaking to those who know. My mother doesn't get this song, or songs like "Are you the one that I've been waiting for?" But people like my mother married their sweetheart from their teen years, and they are still married after 50 years. They are not in love, they are family, and they accept that they don't really like each other's personality that much. There is no growth, no loss, no emotional bravery. But I've had that experience: "We make a little history... every time you come around," and "We talk about it all night night long, and we define our moral ground, but when I crawl into your arms, everything comes tumbling down." I guess it's more of a modern concern, although its surely always happened. Love tears you an extra arse, and you are left there crying, saying, thankyou great spirit. And although everything must end, you have to carry on.

Wow. You are absolutely spot on. We make a little history baby, everytime you call around. Falling in love and having it end despite your best efforts to keep it from crumbling down is one of the most painful things to endure but we must as you say pick ourselves up and keep going. I think straight to you is also a great song that he has written about the power of love and our helplessness to it.

People have their own theories about music and lyrics and they are completely entitled to their thoughts and expressing how they feel. To me this song is about love and the love of another felt towards you. It's one of Cave's finest songs and I feel Cave is grossly underrated as a writer of love songs. His thematic style of songwriting puts him in a class by himself.

Something so magical and awe-inspiring about it. Mick Harvey's Vibraphone work is astonishing through out. The girl I love left me. Everyone told me that the only way to get rid of her thoughts was to forget about her. And only Nick Cave understood me with his lyrics. Then I realized everything. It is not necessary to die for what you love, but to live for what you love. Otherwise you will lose yourself, but also much more.

The Ship Song Come sail your ships around me And burn your bridges down We make a little history, baby Every time you come around Come loose your dogs upon me And let your hair hang down You are a little mystery to me Every time you come around We talk about it all night long We define our moral ground But when I crawl into your arms Everything comes tumbling down Come sail your ships around me And burn your bridges down We make a little history, baby Every time you come around Your face has fallen sad now For you know the time is nigh When I must remove your wings And you, you must try to fly Come sail your ships around me And burn your bridges down We make a little history, baby Every time you come around - The Ship Song - Come loose your dogs upon me And let your hair hang down You are a little mystery to me Every time you come around

I once knew a young woman, I was young also once. This song played in my room and the moonlight came in and caught the pale blue of her eyes. I was transfixed by her in the shadows. When I die, and close my eyes for the final time, I will see those eyes again.

Your words made me cry. I also experienced something similar to what you said. One night. The moon. The eyes. The feeling of true love. This happened in 2003, and yet, I will take this man with me until the day my eyes close. It was so special! (Only that song from Nick Cave was missing at that time, we listened to Radiohead, David Bowie, The Smiths, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd ...) I recently discovered Nick Cave. I don't know how I managed to live this long without hearing him! I think I was focused on other artists. Today Nick Cave is in my ears every day.

I'm delighted they remastered this video version of Nick Cave's Ship Song. I have been looking for it for well over a year on You Tube. To me, this video version truly brings out the best in this melody Mr. Cave has created. The angelic little girls, the backup singers and Nick dressed in his best suit playing the piano.
