Whats this escape that Nicholas keeps using swinging his legs like a pendulum called? It looks like he's trying to get his knees underneath into guard but i've never seen that before. Usually I go for the elbow knee escape like his partner does. For example at 2:03

It's a kipping escape. You can see this movement in one of Danaher's dvd.

The kipp escape is one of the most frustrating things to try to learn. It’s basically nothing like any other move in jitz. Once you get good at it, it’s a game changer. I watched the JD pin escapes and spent at least three months failing at trying to kipp escape people even though I would be drilling it multiple times a week. After three or so months it finally started to click for me and it has completely changed my game. People at my gym refuse to go to mount on me bc I’ve gotten so good at it. As a white belt I was able to escape mount on most brown and black belts. My last competition I losing near the end of the match, I pulled mount and won bc I kipp escaped into a leg lock. I am now getting into trying to kipp escape with one hand which is significantly harder.

It is the kipping escape, mainly used to fit knees between their legs to recover guard. Hard to learn but huge payoff when you do

LIMIBJJ has a video on it. There's actually two types of kipping escapes: overhead and directional. Meregalli was using the directional, going side to side. In the over head, you kip your opponent's weight up and over your head until you can get your knees between you.
