NHL Ref BUSTED On Hot Mic - Tim Peel Joined Spittin' Chiclets To Tell His Side Of The Story

Спорт

Tim Peel was a longtime NHL referee who was in his final season, until a hot mic caught him saying something he shouldn't and everything went down hill from there. Biz, Whit, RA and Grinnelli break it all down with Tim.

@@astronautman12 No, if you listened to what he said, it wasn't a make up call. It was a MISSED call, there is a big difference. He said at game speed, he thought the Nashville player gave a slew foot to the Detroit player. That would be a two minute power play if it happened. He then said as he skated the player to the box, he looked up on the slow mo arena replay and saw it was just a good clean hip check. Peelsy was one of the best refs in the NHL, they take pride in NOT missing calls. He said he skated over to his partner (who was also a very good NHL ref) and said what he did to him. It was Tim offering a lame excuse to his partner for a call he and his partner both know stinks. That lame excuse got caught on a hot mic and people like you took it literally.

It's the worst kept secret that the NHL culture expectes refs to try to penalty call "evenly". HIs quote caught on the hot mic put that cultural expectation into the spotlight, and the NHL higher ups got embarrassed by it. He became the scapegoat for what has always been done for decades. If it embarrases them that much, then the NHL should make real efforts to change that aspect of the culture. Image if NFL or NBA games were called that way. If a team has more penalties in a game the other one, then too damn bad. Why put it on the refs to try and "balance" the game and "fix" it? Damn shame.

honestly I can’t recall the last time I watched a game and actually noticed he was reffing (I’m also not too worried by the refs cause I’m an oilers fan and the non calls are just a regular for us ;) jk) but I feel like we could say that about a lot of refs especially in juniors. I find even with refs, if you’re just stuck officiating junior games and never going up they get egotistical and almost annoyed to be where they are. Still have good refs out here like Wes and Kelly Sunderland I find not only make good games flow well but have control even in the most out of control games. this incident with peel could’ve been handled differently but I’m sure there’s politics behind it as well as the nhl was trying to save their ass. If I’m wrong lmk I’ll go back and watch some Tim peel games if I can find a list of which ones he’s officiated

@JimbyTarnish I'm not saying that's the way I want officials to view the game, and frankly it bothers me when I watch a game and there are 10 or more penalties called and a large portion of the game is special teams. I'm saying, In my opinion Tim's thoughts are congruent with the way the NHL views it's games (aka "saying the quiet part out loud"), and the league pretends that he's some rogue when he's not. The man was on his way out anyway. I just didn't feel this mistake was worth tarring/feathering his entire career over.

I think he was absolutely a scapegoat however it did in combination of players comments prompt the NHL to start moving in a direction that has the refs calling the game by the rules. Refs will never be perfect and bad calls are going to happen but the refs seem to be more and more moving away from compensating to by the book. If he had to be the scapegoat at least use it to improve the situation. If you make an example of him, at least make it stick and stop managing games. That's on the NHL not the refs.

3:36 His attempt at the explanation for the comment on the hot mic falls short IMO. I don’t think he should’ve been fired. Refs should never arbitrarily apply the rules depending on circumstances. The league needs to decide on either calling the book, or allowing refs to make calls depending on circumstances in the game. You can’t have both. Tim Peel’s situation only highlights that divide.

Sounds like a shit deal for peel but Bieksa on HNIC right after this happened with the photo of Tim Peel in the background calling interference is still hilarious.

Are we going to pretend that refs don’t influence a game? With discretion and integrity this is the human element of sports. Absolute horseshit move to throw away a human being at the end of their career to protect business interests.

@JimbyTarnish Makeup calls have been around forever, that's all this was not intentionally throwing an nhl game. Allowing gambling in the game is far worse than anything Tim Peel did.

He doesn’t seem like bad guy at all but there was some boot lickish type behavior going on in this interview. You didn’t attempt to have him clarify at all about his explanation of what happened. It was kind of confusing and if he actually meant what he said then it’s kind of fucked up. I appreciated Ra’s attempt at the very beginning of the interview and at the end to hint at maybe this was something that he’s encouraged to do by league itself. Unfortunately those were really the only attempts to touch on that topic, which is a shame because that was the main issue of the whole incident. I know he’s got pension with the league and you guys probably don’t wanna fuck up his financial situation and I respect that. But if that’s the case then just don’t interview him.

Damn another great guy chopped down because of the politics of NHL. He owned up to his mistake, didn't blame anyone else and didn't even begrudge his time in the NHL. Cherry, Peel and countless others have fallen to woke culture that has no middle ground despite its claims of tolerance.

Here's kind of a rundown of it. Most the time refs let a lot of penalties go, but with Nashville playing as good as they were he decided he was gonna call one of those usual never called penalties, and he said it out loud. He'll Nashville feint office didn't even care about it but the nhl decided to toss em in the trash. I wish stl ( his hometown) would bring him in for a game as a special guest.

@@gpawoodyshoneyhole That’s not what he said though, it wasn’t one of those ‘rarely called penalties’.. He said he thought the guy got slew footed, but he hip checked him, there was *no* penalty on the play, but his first thought, rather than being apologetic for calling a non-call, was to think (not verbatim) ‘I need to get a penalty on Nashville, because they’re good and Detroit is bad, and Nashville was already going to win the game and there might not be another chance to get one on Nashville’.. He said his verbiage came out wrong, but telling the story he doubled down on what we heard on the hot mic. That is scumbag level reffing.
