The fact is the Red Wings, when Babcock was coach, had the best roster in the NHL. Had they had a coach who the players liked, they may have won 3-4 cups instead of just the one.

As an Aussie who fell in love with nhl during Covid lockdown and now can’t consume enough nhl content, subscribed to every pod like NK, Steve dangle, etc it’s amazing to me the unwritten lore around hockey. The usual teamsport stuff but the beyond expected stuff like the accountability, hockey being a family, the hockey-unique stuff around enforcing/fighting. That’s the positives. On the other side is the bizarre culture around refereeing and make-up calls, the league being a retirement village for the same old 50-odd faces, the incredulous idea that bowman or anyone else from the blackhawks could ever be in the league again, the witchcraft-like process of penalties/suspensions (cut a chicken open and go with what the entrails tell you), the darthlvader-like Bettman running this empire supporting moronic stuff like Arizona playing in a car park whilst Canadian markets are screaming for more. It shits me but I’m here for it. I love it. Thank you.

Babcock had coached for the University of Lethbridge back in the early 90’s. I do recall meeting him but I was no hockey player, he went on to coach Spokane in the WHL. I do remember 96-97 season he had coached the World Junior Hockey Championship for Team Canada, one of the guys he first cut from the team was Byron Ritchie (knew this because I went to school with him). At that point I was under the impression that as good as a coach Babcock was, there was this side to him that would be his downfall. When you hear how Babcock got run out of Toronto, and the way it happened I totally understand that the core group of The Maple Leafs thought of him as a liability for the team. I’m glad he’ll never get to coach in the NHL again.

Bingo. Had a baseball coach at age 14 - Dick Dow - most abusive coach I even came across in playing 10+ sports. Jobless egomaniac whose entire life was half-assedly "coaching" young boys, mainly based on whose corruptible parents he was close to. After years as a .350+ hitter batting cleanup, he'd go out of his way to read the batting averages before every game - all skewed on his BS propaganda. I was hitting 9th and placed in RF, if allowed to play at all (despite solid at 1B, 2B & the hot corner playing against this sociopath for years). And I was the only dude on the roster who biked to the games (busy 7km each way), no drives from obsessed parents, who were at work, while an abusive coach would happily drive past with a sadistic grin in storms. Meanwhile, as a freshman in high school the same year, was the only one to make the team, played 3rd base, batted early, even pitched! Amazing what happens when parents and politics are removed, the best actually are allowed to rise! Bottom line, if you don't have at least one parent vouching for you in the 13-17 range, you don't have a hope in hell, as it's 99% politics. Sadly, with all the qouta BS, it's even worse today, I feel for the star kids today without parents to help their cause.

You are boy gossips. Jealous of accomplished athletes and coaches doing things of which you could never imagine. You have no idea. You're nothing but wannabe jock gossips. Absolutely no respect. No idea what you're talking about - nobody had to stay on his team's nor accept those awards And you've made your conclusions from a henhouse full of boys? And the whole story started with looking at photos on a phone? If you've ever hung around real hockey players, you'd know what they're hiding on their phones. The same thing you stare at on yours! You'd think a pervert could identify the other perverts. That's why they didn't want to show Babcock their phones, they got porn all over- duh? They're wannabe hockey players ! They can't score goals, so that's how they have to get their excitement Drive across the Canadian border with your phones and devices, cuz Canadian border takes them, goes through them all they want. There are no privacy rights in Canada - that's the culture under which Babcock lives. It's very different living in Canada - have you left your Mama's basement? Read the fine print of the player safety committees job description - it's to monitor players behavior both on and off ice. George Parros is allowed to demand their cell phones anytime he wants? But a coach can't? And the players safety committee doesn't have to ask permission or tell us anything. When anyone squeaks about the player safety committee, they get fined Boy gossips took down a triple gold coach - how proud! 🙄 But I bet you're proud of this guy's language -can't get three words without cursing. And that's okay? That's appropriate? He doesn't deserve any respect nor credibility. He talks like a 12-year-old trying out curse words for the first time in front of his cool new friends. What a classless bunch of boys. What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room. That rule applies only at players' convenience? I hope Babcock writes a book and spills all the dirt on these little out of control, pill popping, alcoholic perverts he's coached all these decades

Haha remember him the most in Calgary. Wasn’t my favourite person in the NHL at the time (look who I cheer for) but always got a kick out of him. I always thought he was a decent player and who could not envy his hair?! Truth be told, I don’t really much of him in Detroit. I knew he was there, but he got a criminal lack of ice time while he was there that I’m sure Red Wigs fans sometimes forgot he was there. Babcock truly is a real piece of work. I’m almost ashamed to say that he’s from the same province as I am.

You can only trust a coach to do what he thinks is best for him, or at least for his team. So, guys on the bubble, guys who fill those last few spots, have to be looking over their shoulders every day. Older guys have an even harder time because the young guys need ice time to develop. It's a sad story that many, even most, players end their careers with a bitter experience. But in the end, they got to play in the best league in the world. Many others fell before even getting the chance, because the same thing happens in junior.

I traded for Commodore at the trade deadline in NHL 04 to the Rangers. The Rangers had a ton of defensemen injuries. I put Commie in and he repeatedly shit the bed. We got knocked out of the 2nd round by the Islanders. I still haven't lived that shame down. Anaheim was trying to trade Carney to me but declined because of the contract. I should have taken that deal.

Wow...sucks that someone would throw a guy under the bus like this. Pro athletes, especially those who have to work harder and smarter because they aren't the Ovis, McDavids, LeBrons, etc. know they need to be in top shape physically and mentally to stay viable. To throw a guy under the bus by saying he's not a hard worker and out of shape when those things are not true is the height of douche baggery - this could easily end a guy's career.

Man, I remember as a kid, being a huge red wings fan, Commodore said something publicly trashing Babcock while he played for Columbus. Thought it was crazy hearing an NHLer talk about a sitting head coach like that while he was playing for a completely different team. I mean, stuff like that just didn't get published so I felt he just really have meant it. It was only a year or two later he ends up signing with us and I was so confused why the hell he would ever play for Babcock again. But during the off-season, it seemed like the biggest buzz was whether he'd wear #64 or not, and all the drama seemed to be gone. But as soon as the season started, you could see how he was (or wasn't) getting utilized and I felt sooo bad for him because it was obvious Babcock still had it in for him. I was young and still thought Babcock was a great coach, but I always wondered what happened behind the scenes. #fuckbabs
