Yea I’ve definitely been latching on to that theory because of the cast as well as the tone of side b is much more tragic if that makes sense. Also I’ve been saying for a while I think HYBE has had some of the better MV production with TXT, New Jeans and Le Sserafim there’s some good variety in MV style as opposed to the kpop standard

mhj said before the release it was a story between newjeans and bunnies (fandom) newjeans writes the girl's full name on her cast it's "ban heesoo" ban-ee-su =bunnies, also minji confirmed that part yesterday, it's about how lonely kids seek fefuge in fandoms in this case kpop and how fans feel like they're close to their idols because they help them get through hardships in life (the cast) but how she realizes she was isolating herself living in her head and starts pulling away from newjeans to live in reality (what the boy symbolizes) and it's hard at first because newjeans tries to pull her in (the phonecall, newjeans has it's own app called phonning where they communicate directly with bunnies) and at the end when she's an adult she looks at her memmories with fondness and newjeans walks in and they say "it's been so long" because when you revisit your memmories that comfoorting part of your life will be waiting for you to greet you back edit: yeah the director just confirmed this explanaition on an interview

React to SEVENTEEN'S AAA stage's please

Youth is often portrayed as fun and bubbly in kpop. Addressing loneliness and uncertainty of that age instead had me in tears

i love the way newjeans are representing youth, in a way that feels so nostalgic and at times lonely. im so obsessed with this song and the mvs, they continue to do it for me!!!!

it kinda hit me that these girls are on the same route that my f(x) girls were and I'm so touched by it. they truly set themselves apart conceptually, sonically and visually and now showing this obscure/haunting side and storylines, with Ditto, in such a fresh way to keep showing what they're all about was too iconic!!! just like f(x) came with a NU ABO, a new blood type to represent their generation, they're serving new genes to what we've seem from the 4gen, by far. I'm absolutely living for it and I'm so excited to see what them growing!!!!

im also lowkey tired of these flashy mvs with craziest transitions imaginable, expensive sets and clothes etc, id like to see more mvs like ditto, not even from new jeans tbh people have various theories, mostly about some accident or mvs being a metaphor for a parasocial relationship but for me its mostly a story about being lonely and moving on. the camera girl used to be friends with the other five during childhood, but life happened, maybe she moved, and now, when she's a teenager she's lonely and she still sees them sometimes. maybe thats why Minjis calling her, maybe they can only talk on the phone sometimes. its very simple theory, and problably its not what was intened but id like to believe that she found a new friend (the boy) and moved on, matured.

i feel like oftentimes when groups/companies include "lore" in their mvs there's no real point or message being thoughtfully communicated-it just feels like a selling point to generate more views and revenue. i like this because it's a self-contained story that ties into the message of the song as well, and we're not waiting 6 months for another comeback to add to an explanation thats ultimately meaningless. i think ditto is ultimately about loneliness and that's why it's so poignant to me.

there’s a movie called ditto, and i’m pretty sure the mv is heavily inspired by that; in the movie, a girl a boy who live in different time periods are able to communicate through a radio, and i think the girls and the girl with the cast, do that through the camera. she “imagined” them, but when it showed the girls at the end, they drew her on the board. they also had completely different uniforms as well, so i think that backs the theory up a bit.

the over all theory that i’ve seen is that the 6th girl could possibly reperesent new jeans fans or fans in general. and new jeans represents the idol. so this girl is going through school and life alone, but with the comfort of her fave (new jeans in this case) for whatever reason (the cast can represent physical hurt maybe recovering from an accident and coming back to school or emotional hurt / trauma) but to the girl new jeans is everything, or “your idol is everything” that dance practice you’re watching is comfort, those performances you’re watching and vlogs and things are all this big deal to you, but to everyone else they’re essentially nobody? to you your fave or idol walks home with you from school, you wake up to their videos and you come home to their shows etc etc. but to everyone else you’re just looking at. a screen or a camera. and the idea of “ditto” can be the ideology of kind of that parasocial relationship vibe? another idea (this one is mine) that maybe the 6th girl, the more attention she’s aching from from that guy? mayhaps she’s causing a rift between her and her friends? and we’re watching her relive those memories and moments even though those friends are no longer there?

Lots of angles to this are very well known, the Korean movie Ditto (2000), the parasocial relationship of fandom vs the POV of the artist in regards to fans (its not as one sided as people think, but its never the same for each party), there is a survivor guilt theory that seems less plausible once you learn about the movie. But I really the lyrics to the song are really applicable to the scenes that are shown, its really nice the lyrics fit perfectly to the scene regardless of the theme you approach it with in your head. Really well done on many levels this song. Plus a calm drum and bass song, how about that.

I think we have to look at the fact that back then the persons who are now loving this concept were way younger and most likely weren't the commentators resenting the concept. So now this type of concept is more relatable and nostalgic to person's like me who grew up in that era of kpop (tho tbh i came into kpop during the late 2000's era so ive been through the t-pain autotune era too which recycled itself as well. U-kiss man man ha ni or mblaq - Y anybody?😭😭😭😭)

the thing is it was fresh because all they did in thos mvs back then they could pull it out in the live stages and sing it live, meanwhile rn most of kpop groups can not do all the voice effects they put in their songs in the mv during their live stages and also most of groups are doing the same style of music (same structures, same drops, etc) so in an industry like kpop, which it seems liek every month a new group is debuting, being stuck in a music style and a only 1 way of making effects and props and all at the end gets irritating, because even if members are different it could all be from just 1 group. NJ is being called fresh not because they freaking invented this style but because they were the ONLY one group to make a pause and say "I'm not going either the cute concept or the girl crush one that you all are doing when u debut". For gg and bg is being like an unsaid law which is: choosing a especific concept for the group, and it's rather the crush concept or the cute bubbly one😂 and that's what is tiring people😂

Ditto's composer(이오공: 250) said he was very inspired by the Baltimore club dance genre

What I like about the two videos is that it leaves it up to the viewers imagination so that it means different things to different people.

When is the last time you watched a video and you didn’t care who was singing, what they had on, or the choreo? Other than TXT, no group has given me this level of emotion. These girls understood the assignment! Reminds me of “please don’t go” from Immature back in the day. This hit me with the same sentiment and that was RnB 30yrs ago!!! Newjeans is reviving Kpop.

kpop is so fun when the mv and the lyrics of the song make you question the story behind, when they leave room for interpretention and theories.. and i really love music videos that feel like movies somehow. glad newjeans is bringing that back they really deserve the hype

generally people are saying the 2 videos are allegories for fandom's relationship with their group and the process of growing up and letting go of your ships as a youth into adulthood. New jeans is New Jeans, Hee-soo are fans, the camera is stanning, the boy is the real world (hence the focus on the group in A and them disappearing at the end as fans let go at the end and on him in B and correspondingly her being older at the end), the deer representing the relationship between fan and group basically meaning the group is there but just out of reach (you never actually are able to really interact/touch your favorite group)

I love that they’re bringing back storyline and storytelling to Kpop (well not bringing it back but making it their own style of story and art). Obviously I love them and special shout-out to Ador because they deserve nothing but snaps for production, music, editing, storytelling, videography, picking great producers and choreographers, just ✨chef’s kiss✨

i feel like ador is going to market them as an international group. so far, their concepts and sounds are far from the typical kpop vibes and im all for it

I actually already loved the song the first time I listened to it. I love that ADOR went into a different direction from Attention and Hype Boy but still maintained that "NewJeans" sound. This song is actually stuck in my head right and I can't stop listening to it lol

Hi! their label HYBE/Ador came out with a statement before the single was released and the MV is about parasocial relationships between fans/idols and how they're often used as coping mechanisms.

I am watching the reaction videos bcz I want to feel like the time I watched the mv. I’ve noticed that everyone were happily listening to the song and their faces change when they see the deer. I will never forget that feeling of sadness and loneliness I got from ditto. Almost every reactors can’t speak in side B and they all looking sad for reasons. Ppl interpret ditto in different ways but personally for me, every interpretation works and ppl can relate it in their own ways too. This is a masterpiece that I want to cherish forever.

Chile its soooo ....like its not only age appropriate its also nostalgic and/or relatable for people of any age.. I really like it and them🥲🥲🥲🥲

One thing I love about them is they are always thinking of the next thing like the videos within the videos push you it’s like a watching a good show waiting for the new episode to air

the MVs still give me goosebumps and it's probably my 5th/6th time watching, it's built up SO well still not super hot on the song ... like it's stuck in my head but not in the way hype boy/attention were - but i'm sure this is all leading up to something related to the actual album release this group has me so excited 😭😭😭

I live for the freshness of NewJeans. They are doing things the opposite of everybody, their songs are not very loud, their MVs are completely different from all the other groups, boys and girls. It reminds of BTS and the BU. Everything very artist with a storyline 💜

To me … i believe that her friends which are the 5 (new jeans) died … they were all in a car accident and she was the lone survivor (although some one else made the connection that the deer was involved in the accident) And that’s why she always sees a deer …. When she looks at her cast and nothings there it’s because her friends have died… and they were not there to write anything on it…she is reminiscing ….. the boy in the video is watching her and helping her to overcome her sadness … that’s why you see her at the end leaving her friends and then they show her walking away with the guy

This could be a stretch but for me the MV demonstrated the relationship between a somewhat socially underdeveloped youth today and the relationship some of make with these idol groups that can be both life saving but also very lonely without real social engagement.

As two interpretations, the first interpretation is that everyone died in an accident, and only Hee-su survived. The cast on his arm was from an accident. There`re some theories about what the mv`s could be about. one of them is that the girl filming is grown up, but having these memories. or the her friends died in the snow in a car accident envolving a deer. i think we will only know for sure when they say something about the concept of these mvs.

BTS was the only group who portrayed how Youth truly is... the ups and downs, the strugless with being lonely, the pressure of the world and so much more and they continued to tell the story of youth and growing up in a harsh yet beautiful way... this is what Ditto gave me, its been years since i felt such a fragile and yet powerfull message being shown by a group. it also gave me run, i need you and the whole the most beautiful moment in life era energy, love it. Looking fordward to NJ future!!!!

From bunnies perspective, NewJeans 💜🐰 If you look at it from that point of view, there will be various interpretations It's a fan song that you don't want your "bunnies" to leave... The song is so good. They're keeping up with the style that they have going for this group and I love it. The lyrics and the melody everything about the song it's sweet but the two videos got me fucked up. I have no idea what's happening all I know is I was enjoying it and they were all friends and then I was sad for the girl because it seems like she just made up these 5 friends because she doesn't have anyone. They twisted my heart but the song is good I need Hybe to stop playing me like this.
