Newegg is Desperate: Dumping GPUs with "JustGPU"
Ойындар
Sponsor: be quiet!'s Silent Base 802 geni.us/DaGYu
Newegg launched a new website - JustGPU - to try and dump its video card inventory. Unfortunately, the website is filled with misleading "benchmarks" that are all seemingly made up. In fact, Newegg goes so far as saying they're basically fake, but stops short of specifying to what extent. The website acts like any number of other affiliate spam websites with fake charts and "data" to try and lead a purchase based on some random attributes (like core count), but stops short of actually helping anyone. This is our look at JustGPU.

So, 32.4 FPS is displayed as "30 FPS", while 32.5 FPS becomes "35 FPS". Sure... makes perfect sense 8 Strangely, in many cases, the differences between cards they have HUGE stock levels of and the ones they have relatively few of has been adjusted to favor the ones they're trying to get rid of. Guess it's cheaper for them to create a bogus comparison chart to move overstock than to lower prices. Of course, a "GPU comparison site" run by the retailer of all the products on the site is a clear conflict of interest to begin with, but I guess that shows just how much Newegg cares about fostering well-informed consumers.

Craftsman used to be the most trusted and reliable midtier tool brand, and they used that reputation to sell all higher prices while slapping production costs by making crap products out of crap materials, and within five years they were a joke. Leaning on an earned reputation to blow up short term profits by cutting costs only benefits CEOs that have golden parachutes and can claim they increased profits by 400% in two quarters, leaving out that it resulted in the company going out of business. So strange that they've gone from my go-to place to buy hardware since the early-mid 2000s to someone I don't really trust and will attempt to avoid each time I need a computer part. Very unfortunate for the personal computer enthusiast industry. I've purchased literally every part for a PC for multiple personal builds over the last 15+ years. Now I'd be worried that I'd get a broken part and they'd blame me. That is a far cry from the service I'd used to get, such as a new PSU taking a dump after five days and them sending me a replacement with very few questions asked.

Maybe they're hoping for repeat purchases once the 40-series releases, and they're downplaying performance so that when the new gen comes out, they can make the gap look bigger, and people who bought a card only to have it immediately "obsolete" might be tempted to re-upgrade? Not sure what else makes sense. Or maybe on the low end, crap cards like the 6400 aren't selling compared to the 6600.

Prob find they want to shift much higher inventory of the lower end cards than high end, so tell non-savvy visitors that a $450 card will run games at same frame rate as a $2000, they will think they got one hell of a deal saving $1500 to get exact same performance.

Also, I can't help but point out how a bar chart for comparing 2 things is least useful when the bars start at the same point then spread apart. The point of comparisons is to see both tips of the bars side by side, not as far apart as possible. If you're trying to use a chart to visualize data then spreading the number values as far from eachother as will fit on the screen is the diametric opposite of that goal. It accomplishes data visualisation in literally the worst possible way imaginable. I can't even think up a sarcastic way of making a chart less useful than spreading values apart to compare them especially without grids, scales, or any context whatsoever. Even pie charts would be more useful graphic representations of comparisons in this case. Thank god we don't need to compare real data though, given the numbers were made up and rounded estimates based off of unrelated synthetic benchmark (singular, not plural) anyway lol. TLDR this should be illegal. How is consumer protection bureau not all over this? You can't just play dumb and pretend this is an honest mistake, they're intending to mislead consumers that a triple slot card is better than a dual slot card, as if you're paying for real estate. They're preying on consumers not knowing better when they're advertising themselves as informing consumers, then sending victims to their own retail site to make purchases based on the misinformation. the frustrating thing about the whole 1440p=2K thing is that its not only wrong (2K is 1080p, 1440p is 2.5K [assuming a ~16:9 aspect ratio]) but most people consider it to be a small enough detail as to think its not worth correcting

Even 4k isn't really 4k: the term is from cinema packaging where the aspect ratio is different for every title, so they measure by fitting it in a 2:1 aspect box and measuring the width, because most cinema is larger than 2:1 and thus is limited by the width. So in short, 4k is supposed to be fitting a 4096x2048 box, not the 3840x2160 resolution that is actually the continuation of the computer/TV resolutions and nothing to do with cinema packaging.

Hey Steve, got a question - do you have any article that goes into how-to of testing your own build with step-by-step guide on what to install, what settings to choose and such, preferably in written form? I have somewhat old build with Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1660 Super, 16 gigs of RAM and 650W PSU, and wanna see for myself what part should I upgrade next. I couldn't really find a comprehensive guide that explains how to setup the testing environment and enterpret results that you get. Maybe I'm even thermal bound and could even eek out some more frames just by changing fan settings or parts of cooling solution. If not, I think that would be a really great help for entry level enthusiasts such as myself
THANK YOU for calling out the "2K" crap. 2K IS NOT 1440p, it's 1080p! Nobody should be using "2K" anyway...

Userbenchmark is good only to check if your PC is performing as expected because you can compare your CPU/GPU/HDD/SSD performance to other users that benchmarked the same components, it isn't perfect as other people may test parts that are overclocked or benchmark them while doing something in background making the average score go up and down a little bit, but it is simple and relatively fast test I like to do on PCs. However, yes, for comparing between multiple CPU or GPU models it truly is misleading as many times it does not represent true difference in performance. Intel CPUs usually have higher average score that AMD counterparts even though they perform similarly in gaming or productivity. Different GPU architecture have weird average scores too, RX 6600 have a score of 77.7% while RTX 2060 have 88.5%, which doesn't make any sense when in gaming RX 6600 performance is closer to RTX 3060, definitely higher than a 2060.
