You are exactly right. When I was younger and crazier living at the beach for a couple of decades I unfortunately got into a few ugly brawls with people I saw walking away from their trash on the beach. Sometimes when everyone is drinking, fights happen!

Right. I was so angry when I walked up to the lake, looked down and saw that line in the bush. You know they saw it before walking away. If something small falls out of your pack without you noticing it that's one thing. This was simply not caring and there is too much of that all around the mountains.

A lot of us pick up other people's trash. The point of these videos I put up from time to time is to reach people newer to the outdoors and kids. Get them focused on the issue and start them off right. Long time litterbugs are a lost cause. I think that's just who they are which is despicable.

My new favorite, especially on the Winnemucca trail, are people who pick up their dog poop and put it in a bag but then leave the bag on the side of the trail.

I went on a short hike in Lassen National Park once and hauled along a small cooler with some snacks and drinks. after we ate, I stashed in near the trail while we hiked around the lake. Not only did someone steal my cooler, but they dumped out the trash so they wouldn’t have to carry the weight. I don’t understand why these people even go to the trouble to get to places they obviously don’t appreciate.

Probably no hope of changing people who are old and doing that sort of thing for years but there is hope if I can reach kids and those who might be new to the outdoors. I put clips like this every so often. I put them on my variety playlist so people who are looking for information can rune into them.

It's amazing someone could leave all of that line tangled in a bush at the water's edge and just walk away without caring. Anyone who has been doing that sort of thing for years can't be reached because they obviously don't care. My target audience for this type of clip that I put up on occasion is individuals who are inexperienced in outdoor activity and this is a message that can stick with them. Kind of like my videos on stuff like rattlesnake safety, bear safety, having enough water on hikes, etc. Same goal. The difference is this type of problem effects everyone who has the misfortune of seeing it.

I get very upset when I see this kind of thing too. A few yrs ago I caught a pair of pretty college aged girls about to leave all kinds of garbage behind at this beautiful alpine lake here in the Cascades. I reminded them nicely to pick up after themselves...one of them got nasty with me and told me to F-off and it was none of my business. then a few other people joined in the discussion when they saw her yelling at me. Soon about 9 people there joined in to chastize these girls and the quiet one just went and picked up while the nasty on just kept calling the rest of us names. A beautiful day in a beautiful place turned into a s**t show for everyone because of these nasty princesses. a couple followed them back to the trail head and I did'nt see any garbage dumped along the way so I guess they took it with them...the whole thing was rediculous...

I'm glad you called them out on it and a crowd let them have it. The nasty girl sounds like a horrible human. The other one sounds like there is hope for her. I lived at the beach in San Diego for a couple of decades and I got into a couple of altercations with dudes walking away from their trash on the beach. Unfortunately, it didn't stop at yelling but those were my crazy years. I despise people who knowingly littler in beutiful environments. Littering is horrible any time but a place like you describe in the Cascades is the worst case scenario in my eyes.
