I like the open, easy access. Sometimes it helps to have things like large boulders and bushes to hide behind when you are trying to sneak up but if I had to choose I'll take nothing on the banks to interfere with casting access and my line when I am trying to present lures. Hope you can get back out there this year. The trout are waiting for you!

I was down to one of my last options. If you see me fishing a tube jig in a river you know the going got tough! I rarely do that!

Nice fishing what a beautiful spot. Way to change gears. A friend and I went SD bay fishing yesterday. We had live bait which we were targeting halibut., also sand bass and spotted bay bass. The sardines were big . Had good tidal flow and kept getting racked in the bait properly mostly bass and a few Halibut I sure l later we switched up the rigs . The bass bit a certain color jigsaw and then we caught a few short halibut . Finally the last one of the day was the best at 21” not a keeper , but still rewarding. Long story short watching your determination and adapting has motivated me to be a better fisherman. Cheers brother.🎣😎

I used to fish Mission Bay for halibut every year. Live bait makes all the difference in the world. The big sardines you mention are the best. Fresh dead is even better than frozen. I lived in Mission/Pacific Beach for over two decades. We used to take a 4 gallon bucket and punch a bunch of holes in it and slid it into a 5 gallon bucket. Once we got our live bait we'd drive it out to the park in mission bay at the end of the mission beach jetty and throw the live bait out in the 4 gallon bucket and we'd have live bait all day. That spot is awesome because it goes from deep to shallow on that point and big halibut seem to like to sit there as the tide rises. I miss that and whacking corbina in the surf on light tackle. I miss swimming in the ocean, surfing, girls everywhere, seemingly endless good times, I miss all of it! Your comment brought back a lot of good memories. Unfortunately, I got too old to be down there with my habits and lack of self control!

I was a little worried at first. I wasn't getting much action on my marabou jigs. Just a few follows but they could have hit the jig if they wanted to. They were hitting the nymph under a bobber but my hook setting wasn't great. When you see me bust out a tube jig in a river that's pretty much a hail Mary from the 50 yard line, 5 pts down with 3 seconds left in the football game. I was desperate because I rarely use those in rivers. Once I saw it worked I refined the approach and it was on. I want to get out there with my fly rod when the flow drops a bit and it's cold. Then we'll see what those trout have to say for themselves!

Things started out slow. I had to dig into my bag of tricks to get things going. When you see me fishing a tube jig in a river that's a sign I am not catching jack and I'm on high skunk alert! I had to fight it off somehow!

Hey Amani! I was able to make it to the west Carson today, I was also having trouble keeping my jig down on the bottom, so I switched to a red and brown mouse tail with about a foot leader and one split shot and that was the ticket for me. Idk why they like the red but they do. I hooked a big one right after I rigged my pole and didn’t set the drag so when I went to net it and fumbled the net. took off up stream on the shore and snapped the line 🤦🏼‍♂️ but caught 3 17in trout

Oh, sounds like a tough loss but at least you got to see how big it was. Yeah, keeping it close to the bottom was the ticket for me as well.

That west Carson definitely looked like the Owens. The river produced some nice rainbows stock trout or not. Looked like fun.

It was fun once I figured out how to catch them. They were not liking any of my usual go to options including spinners. When you see me bust out a tube jig in a river it's fire alarm time! I'm down by 5 pts running flea flicker plays from the 50 yard line with 2 seconds left in the football game!

@@CaptainCompassion1 At least you got 5. I only fished that one stretch for a few hours but it wasn't easy. I had to reach down into my bag of tricks just to get something going. I am probably going to wait until it's cold in the Fall to hit that river again.

Very nice fish. Most are hatchery? Nice looking surroundings. Better than deep snow.

I was wondering what day of the week and what time it was you were there. I stop there occasionally on my way to Caples and Silver lakes. I park right at the bridge at the turn down to Tahoe and just play around a little bit. But most of the time as summer comes around, that place is packed with fly fisherman. I'm a spinner so I'm outnumbered. Lol But this was great, gave me lots of ideas what to use now when I'm in that area. Show those fly fisherman how it's done lol

This was last Tuesday and I was the only one out there I could see the entire morning. With that said, I usually see what you are describing in the Summer. I even once saw a dude teaching some kind of fly fishing class out there with about 20 people involved. I think I'm going to hit it in the Fall/Winter when no one is around. I think it's open under section 5.85 of the regulation guide but I could be mistaken. Head out there with your spinning rod! I like fly fishing but I have grown to love battling larger trout in rivers on my 5' ultralight rod so that's my go to. Too many people who fly fish seem to think they are the "Jedi Knights" of fishing. They look down on people who use spinning rods when it's simply just a different approach. They need to calm down with that elitist view. When you see me fishing a nymph under a small bobber with my spinning rod that is no different than what all of those people who are fishing nymphs under a strike indicator with expensive fly rods, multiple spools of different size tippets, and decked out in thousands of dollars of gear and tackle are doing. Strip it all away and they are fishing a fly under a bobber. Add that combo to your tackle and you have a fly fishing element. I catch a lot of nice fish on my river fishing playlist and in my Patreon videos doing just that. Learning to manage your slack line and effectively setting a hook on that rig takes practice but once you have it down you become a little more deadly on a river!

I just happened to stop there after opening day on my way to see That Silver Lake was still frozen current LO.l. And I think the flyboys we're just up To get the rust off. I hadn't been fishing in a good 20 years until I cleaned my garage out and found my old gear. So I said why not. But years ago I used to fish pretty much all the rivers Up in the sierras and some of the smaller lakes and While the flyboys we're getting skunked, I New the trick of catching helgamites By running a stick under Submerged branches Near the shore and they would come round up top and just pick them off, The Dobson fly larva. I believe they are. Never ran out of Bait, lol And just casting them weight less up stream On four pound test, drifting them around boulders. Big trout In smaller streams prefer the real deal.lol.

Perhaps a different thought train?...i pick of a heck of a lot of Mono every time i go out to the rivers.. shall i condemn all hardware fishermen?.. when i walk back to my car.. i carry a trash bag in my vest.. and i come close to filling it every time

Just like Owens. And the biggest problem in these meadow streams is how easily the fish can spot you. Gotta stay super low on the approach.

In a couple of sections where my shadow stretched across the river I didn't even make a cast once I realized I spoiled the spot on approach. large boulders and bushes can definitely serve as effective cover.

You think the black caribou is the best all around alpine lake lure?

No. I think marabou jigs are good when the water in rivers is moving good, areas in rivers with boulders, and when you need to fish deep in rivers. They don't seem to do that great in lakes and in slow sections of a river where the fish have time to look it over. They can work everywhere but water moving at a decent flow seems to be the most consistent. I like jigs in general because of their versatility. On this day, the fish were following my marabou jig but weren't taking it which is a frustrating part of fishing with them. I had to switch.

I believe if you have a fishing license your good to go as in parking in that lot

The sign was talking about some pass I never heard of. Parking on the road and walking in is really easy. In fact, next time I'm going to park on the road upstream a bit and walk straight into the meadow area.

I use cheap marabou crappie jigs from bass pro shops/Cabela's but they fall apart real easy. I have to wrap them once over with a thin piece of yarn to hold them together. I go over better marabou jig options in my clip on my fishing tips playlist. They are better made but more expensive. The Tube jigs I use mostly are the 1/16 OZ powerbait brand but you can't use those in special regulation water because technically they are infused with scent even though I can't tell the difference. For tube jigs in special regulation water I often use "sierra slammers" but those mostly come in 1/32oz size so I've been saving the 1/16oz jig heads on from the powerbait brand jigs once they fall apart. The 1/32oz jigs have better sinking action but they are hard to cast so I mostly just stick with 1/16oz tube jigs and vary the action myself. I am getting ready to look for a more inexpensive special regulation compliant tube jig option. Sierra slammers are really expensive. You can get the 1/16oz PowerBait brand tube jigs on amazon for about a buck apiece in packs of 5.

It's just upstream from the 88/89 junction off Hwy88. Downstream the river is in more of a canyon environment with boulders and larger pools so it has a lot to offer in that area.

What street is the parking lot located on? Thank you !

I was fishing downstream from the 89/88 intersection bridge. The river runs along the 88 HWY and there are miles of it. Can't miss it.
