This new Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is an all-new motorcycle from Suzuki that truly amazes in some areas. Others are questionable but the price of the bike makes it an especially interesting proposition. The top feature that's there also in BMW's top-selling BMW R1250GS is something that we should take into account when choosing a mid-size adventure motorcycle. Really, really cool!
The main competitors are: Triumph Tiger 900, Ducati Multistrada V2, BMW F850GS, KTM 890 Adventure, Honda Transalp 750. Perhaps Yamaha Tenere 700, Husqvarna Norden 901, Aprilia Tuareg and Ducati DesertX due to their long travel suspensions.
All views are my own and are based on my personal experiences with this all-new Suzuki V-Strom 800DE from 2023. Stay tuned and subscribe for next mid-size adventure bikes and comparisons on the channel!

Sorry, but I strongly disagree with a few statements in the video. My wife owns the 800DE and I have an Africa Twin. I have ridden the DE often, and we now have over 3000 miles on the 800DE. The only problem with the DE to me personally is I am 6'2.5" and it's not quite big enough for me since I am used to the AT. If I didn't have the AT to compare, I would probably be happy with the DE myself. 1. This bike has very mild vibration only at 70-75 mph, and it is not bad compared to any other parallel twin. It is smoother than the AT in all areas except at this speed, and again, not at all uncomfortable. 2. The power is very good for an 800 parallel twin at any speed. Very torquey when torque is needed, including American freeway speeds, 80+. It's not a crotch rocket, and not intended to be. You can have the clanky KTM's and their unreliability. Would I like more power? Sure! One can never have too much! 3. The rotation of the throttle is the same as my AT... Arm snake comment. 4. The quick shifter is excellent upshifting, not as good on the way down but still good, as reported by many. The DE's suspension is excellent for its intended purpose. Maintenance is easy especially compared to the Transalp. The Transalp air filter access is downright ridiculous. The Transalp oil sump is another blunder by Honda along with cheesy suspension, low-hanging exhaust, and unintuitive torque, ABS... selections on the dash and I think the Transalp's profile just looks downright cheap. And I like Honda so I don't have a bone to pick. Love my AT. I agree with the statements that it is too quiet and lack of cruise control as Suzuki's biggest mistakes with the DE, along with the higher weight numbers, but riding the DE, it doesn't feel like the numbers would suggest. It rides light. Very good off-road. Looks are subjective. I was neutral about the looks of the DE at first, but it has grown on both of us to where we really like it! Do you want ugly? Look at a lot of the KTM's! Looks like a fly. The BMW looks like a pig in my opinion. Can't stand the cylinders poking out the sides... hideous! Not to mention the yuppy status🤮 As the after market ramps up this bike is going to really be a top notch performer. With exhaust, programming, and a few other mods, this might be as good off road as the Tenere, and far better on road, which it already is. The Transalp will take big bucks to catch up.

Suzuki are good at making bland motorcycles, which I believe is a good thing for a road biased adventure bike. It’s nice to have heaps of power on tap, but this isn’t the best thing on dirt roads or proper off road work. Smooth power and comfort is what you want most of the time. Reliability and fuel range are also very important factors.

On the other hand in terms of equipment, V-Strom has not much to be able to compete with F850GS. Both are pretty comfy though. I believe that F850GS needs a refresh very quickly to stay really competitive in the segment. Thanks for bringing that up!

I really like this new Suzuki 800 DE but the only reason I haven't bought one yet is the lack of cruise control. I feel like this needs to be a standard feature on these modern bikes designed for travel. Also I feel like the business model KTM has adapted where the bikes are capable but you have to pay a dealer to unlock the cruise control feature that is already built into the bike is very sleezy and anti-consumer. I ride a KTM 2 stroke dirt bike but I hate what they are doin to the adventure bike buyers.

I agree with your perspective on KTM's policy. It just doesn't look good. It's the opposite of gaining customers' trust and loyalty I think. But they do watch and listen, so they'll likely... just don't tease us at all and get rid of such trials for testing some features. Or who knows. About the cruise control on a V-Strom 800DE - yes, it's strange that there's no option. I expect them to add it at some point or maybe with a model refresh if there will be any along the way.

Bikes in this class and price range can easily have CC without needing to go up to a different model. That's fine that you don't ride for more than an hour before taking a break. Some of us ride for several hours before stopping and do way more than your "close to 20k miles a year." I don't see why you feel the need to try to bash me. Do you want a pat on the back of something? Do you need someone to tell you that you are the best coolest most hardcore rider in the history of motorcycles because you don't use CC? These new parallel twins are a whole new thing. What for example KTM have done with 890 Adventure (or any other 890 from them) is beyond my understanding but these engines are simply stunning. I'd say that better in almost every way than V2 engines except for sound (still quite close). And yeah, there's a Tiger 900 with a 3-cylinder inline engine that does the job quite well too.

Bought a 2024 Vstrom 800RE, replacing a 2014 Yamaha Super Tenere ES, which I loved but was getting too heavy for my 69 years. The Vstrom is great for around town, twisty roads, and non-highway touring. The Vstorm is very maneuverable at low speeds, in the garage, and is a joy on curves. On the highway, its buzzy over 65 MPH and you feel it in your feet and hands. It does seem to level out a bit over 75 mph, but the buzz is still there. Is it touring bike? - definitely, if you are not spending 8 hours on a US interstate. If so, then get a bigger bike with cruise control. The seat is narrow, hard, and okay for an hour or two without a break. This is not the motorcycle I would take for an iron butt; it would be the bike I'd want for a comfortable daily rider that could be pressed into service for a two-day trip down the coast.

I've already tested the new Transalp and it along with this V-Strom 800DE are very, very close performance-wise. V-Strom 800DE is more comfortable while Transalp also handles well at higher speeds. Suzuki is more than 10% more expensive but overall I expect these two to compete very directly with each other. KTM 890 is a weapon that made me fully wet when riding it. It's an adrenaline generator and literally gets very hot due to heat management issues. It handles more like a Transalp (better than a V-Strom below 20 km/h, worse at 20-80 km/h and then again better above 80 km/h) and isn't as comfortable as a V-Strom 800DE suspension-wise. It's so crazy though that it makes it super tempting. The one I was riding already had some issue with front suspension or some bearing out there. KTM living up to its legend. I'll be getting back with my direct comparisons of all these around the end of the year or in early 2024.

I could answer that specifically but until there are different than stock tires installed on a Versys 650, I would not recommend riding the bike at all as it's a serious safety hazard with its stock Dunlop tires. If they were reliable and safe, it would be possible to better assess Versys' cornering capabilities. I'm not a fan of Versys 650 overall.

I also experienced vibration, at ca 5000 rpm, when testing the bike. It was a tingling in my feets from the foot pegs and it was actually so much vibration that it’s a showstopper for me. It was very noticeable vibrations with my boots. At the highways where I live it´s around 70-75 MPH, I believe right in the "vibration rpm" of ca 5000-5500 RPM? Very unfortunate, because IMO the bike was otherwise great and also great looking bike, to boot.

Good point about bending a rim, however, it would have to be an extremely unfortunate hit to bend a rim so much that air would run out of the tire. I believe that it's mostly a cost-saving choice to put tube tires despite even the cheapest bikes have them. In the end perhaps a smart way to communicate a saving here. Tubeless ones require fully sealed rims if they're to be spoked, and those are more expensive than not fully sealed rims as far as I know.

I think most of the adventure bikes you are testing are to big for real life adventure.. If you are going abroad exploring poor countries you need it to be fairly lightweight,, Not to complicated.. something a local mechanic in e.g. Africa, parts of Asia or south America can fix.. Heck make it carburated... A Lightly used Suzuki DR650S with only 43.5 hp but tons of low end torque,, and a wet weight of 162kg fits the bill. Yamaha gets the point.. to my knowledge the only adventure bike from Yamaha is based on the 689cc twin 270 degree crank engine with 73.6 hp.. A very tractable engine for off-roading.. (not to over-sqaure).. A wet weight of 203kg.. 21 inch wheel up front and an 18 inch wheel in the back and 210 mm front wheel travel..

I have to say your idea that a bike be less complicated for poor country mechanics to fix for you is a bit odd. First of all these bikes don't break down anymore....as long as the rider is paying attention to the maintenance. If you are going through poor countries with (simple) mechanics, and you are not one yourself, then maybe you shouldn't be going on such an adventure....I don't think the weight of your bike is going to make any difference to your success. The weight of a bike is basically related to the engine size so pick the engine and accept the characteristics of the frame its in....If the point of your comment is to suggest an antiquated DR650 compared to a modern DE800 tells me you might just be stuck in the past...motorcycles evolve and its happening right before your eyes......In my view....the new ADV market is part of the evolution....but the true evolution is the ENGINE.....

I've noticed that motorcycles that make you sit upright, are less comfortable over time. I forget to use my core, and end up holding on to bars like my life depends on it. Also my spine ends up taking much of the hits, versus having a hip pivot for energy dissipation. In addition to wide handle bars, that could be what you're noticing. If you haven't already, try to learn forward a bit and hug it more with your legs, and use your core and see if that helps with long term wrist comfort. It may help in it's willingness to lean in higher speeds.

  • @VToldsMotoShow

I get what you're saying and it's correct that sitting this way doesn't stimulate your back muscles a lot. However, it depends a lot on the positioning of a handlebar too. There's a solution to that too which I use myself for other reasons - it's a stiff back protector that not only protects your back but by being stiff, sort of forces you to straighten up and it just feels good then. Thanks a lot for sharing these observations.
