    I'm 67 and the bike world is just moving too fast for me. I bought a 'forever bike' in '17, and nothing could be more obsolete. Oh it's gorgeous now; a Moots Vamoots RSL mechanical rim with full Dura Ace on Mavic R-Sys SL tubular rims, 25 mm Victoria's tubular tires, ti stem, and post. But I feel like I'm riding a museum. It's not fair really, but I can still hold wheels, and drop people who are riding the new bikes. Those bikes are beautiful though, as is this new SRAM groupset. I have the Red on my gravel bike (yes I do) and this new group is a fantastic new look. Enjoy young people!

    My 9-year-old rim brake Etap groupset is still 500g lighter, so referring to weight savings as a selling point is useless. Where I think Sram is winning is that the groupsets are backward compatible. I can upgrade to Disc, and all I need to buy is the new shifters/callipers, which will still work with my existing 11-speed setup. Having said that, the cost of Levers, callipers and rotors is more than what I paid for the etap upgrade kit which included levers and both derailleurs.

    I've been waiting for this groupset to drop to buy my dream build all-road bike and it appears worth the wait. I own bikes with both the 1st and 2nd generation Red Axs and personally never felt the front end shifting was a problem, but the levers do appear to be a nice improvement and I like that they defaulted to what was a harder to find medium cage in the back.

    @@gcn The new Red AXS seems simply awesome. Enjoyed Si's review and his astute observation that evolving was the best course. Impressive with the feedback they have received from the pros and that they have reacted so quickly. Am half tempted to go out and spec a build at Orbea for a new Orca OMX. I don't need it, would simply like it. I own my dream bike, a 2020 OMX with Ultegra Di2. As a recreational albeit committed cyclist, I cannot logically justify it as I think the marginal gain would be lost on me. But I can always be talked into fun experiences. What do you think about the new Orbea OMX? It seems like that new frame could really take advantage of the new Red AXS.

    Yes the backwardcompatibility is absolutely stunning. I would not make any changes because of weight but I could later upgrade the grips because of the ergonomics the fact that my new bike has old sram red but first I go to the bikefitter to make him do final adjustments and then I will during the summer find out what I want. I also have the new dura ace and these grips are awesome and fast and effortsless to use which is nice on long descends on gran canaria but here in Denmark the slower old Redbrakes are doing absolutely fine.

    The battery notifications are the same as well. On my Garmin I get notifications on all my sensors if one needs battery replacement or recharging (which includes Di2). It also helps Di2's much larger battery means it's a long time before I need to charge it anyways. Didn't know Sram didn't have that feature yet for a while, along with the extra shifter buttons as well.

    Huge missed opportunity to highlight the magic pulley wheels that SRAM brought over from the MTB side for the rear derailleur. It's a pretty insane party trick to watch the feature engage when the pulley wheel gets jammed and the outer ring of the pulley wheel keeps spinning. A very cool feature for sure and the kind of innovation you don't see right now, or really ever, from Shimano.

    I am very happy brands are starting to wake up to crank length. I use 150mm cranks so to me seeing that rival and red (I don’t know what they were thinking with force) now have a 160mm option is good sign that everyone is not only looking at chainring sizes and gear ratios in terms of where to improve. Hopefully sometime not in the far distant future they can get down to 150mm to give options to those whom are shorter or have shorter legs.

  • @gcn

    Shorter cranks are getting really popular! 🙌 Do you think it's being driven by the pro trend to go shorter?

  • @atakdd

    @atakdd

    16 күн бұрын

    @@gcn Yes and no. Yes because now that everyone sees Tadej use 165mm cranks given his height I think more people are questioning the historical perspective on crank length. I also say no because I know in mountain biking people are going as far down as 135mm, so that could eventually be a "trickled down mtb tech to road bike" situation much like how disc brakes were. I think this is more of the fact that the cycling industry started with taller riders in mind and completely ignored those shorter, and now that manufacturers are making shorter cranks those taller cyclists call them short cranks while us shorter cyclists call them normal cranks, it is all relative. My honest opinion, it is simple physics. Yes a longer crank has more leverage but the turning circle just to spin the cranks are so much bigger that top dead center becomes really wide and you can only really start pedaling around 3-4 o'clock position on the cranks as opposed to 12-1 o'clock position. I am 5'7", I use 150mm cranks (rotor is the only company that easily provides that short for road bikes) and the longest I would ever use is 165, but even with 165 it just does not feel right. Jan Frodeno, the greatest triathlete of all time, is a beautiful example of this. He is a very tall guy, has a saddle height of 860mm and rides a crank length of 172.5. When you look at the ratio of his saddle height:crank length, this is where you can numerically see what is going on. His ratio si 4.985 while for someone like me, using 165mm cranks (675mm saddle height with 165 crank length), I have a ratio of 4.09 monumentally closed hip angle compared to Jan (experienced bike fitters can someone argue here individual limb length in the overall leg length will make somewhat of a difference, I am stating all this from a generality perspective). In order for me to be equal to Jan in hip angles, I would need around a 145-150mm crank length, and keep in mind when you change crank length, not only does your hip open up due to the shorter cranks, you need to minimum raise your saddle whatever the difference in crank length is (if you shorten by 10mm, minimum you will raise saddle by 10mm). The reason I say minimum, a lot of times when you switch to a shorter crank length, your stability on the saddle pedaling increases so much that it warrants more of a height increase than you would mathematically think; with a 10mm crank shortening difference this could cause a 15mm to 20mm saddle height increase. Lets take a look at Tadet Pogacar. just a couple years ago, he used 172.5 mm cranks, last year he used 170mm cranks, and now this year he is using 165mm cranks. From a GCN video on his bike when he used 172.5mm cranks, according to them his saddle height was 730mm. Now he is on 165mm, so lets for the sake of simple math assume he has raised his saddle 7-8mm (he most likely is around 1-1.5cm higher but lets keep the math simple). That would give him a saddle height of around 738mm, which his saddle height:crank length ratio would calculate out to ~4.46. For me to achieve Tadet's ratio, optimally I will need 150 or 155mm cranks. For those whom don't have any issues, likely you are taller and your crank length was already fine, but for those shorter, they were always too long and we are just finally starting to get options.

    It's a step in the right direction. People shouldn't have to go to Rotor or Crodor for cranks that fit just because they're 5'7" or under. My 20-y-o daughter is 5'2" and the last few years have been a study on sourcing short cranks that don't cost more than her second-hand bike and then sourcing chainrings that fit their non-standard spiders. 🤯 Obviously there's no hyperglide on the front! The two critical dimensions for the biomechanical interface with the power source (your legs) are the distance from saddle to bottom bracket and the crank length. It is as important as being in the right gear. The leverage issue is a fallacy, it actually cancels out against the leverage of the rider's limbs. Shorter limbs with shorter bones have more leverage meaning they apply more force but move less distance. Decreasing crank length proportionally to the rider will decrease the distance required and increase the force required in proportion to those of the rider. Similarly, tall riders need longer cranks because their long limbs can't apply as much force to the pedals but they can move a greater distance. The mainstream cycling industry isn't backwards, it's just profit-orientated. They will change when consumers get more clued-up to their biomechanical, which I believe is happening now that bike fits are becoming more popular following the decline in steel frames and hence the custom frame industry. Hopefully we'll see 155, 150 and 145mm crank options from mainstream brands in the next few years.

It's nice that it is backward compatible so if I don't like the ergonomics I could exchange the grips. I have the new dura ace on ultimate and these brakes requires less effort than the now old sram red and this is the bike I use for Gran Canaria in winter. But the slower old Sram red braking power does not affect my ride here in Denmark. To save weight maybe it would be better to upgrade the wheel set on your bike.
