New Sako 90 - Full Range and Field Test

Спорт

Replacing Sako`s legendary 85 rifles the new Sako 90 with a re-contoured action using the broaching method so that concentricity and close tolerances are paramount. New cutaway action for speedy top feeding. Non tapered 17mm ie Tikka scope mounting system. A new bolt assist plunger for bolt disassembly and de-cocking. Double plunger ejection system from Sako`s TRG tactical range and a new adjustable trigger blade and excellent new rotary five position trigger pull mechanism. All barrels are made from the cold hammer forged method for true, concentric and long lasting barrels and now they ensure the rifling twist rates are optimised for lead free ammunition too. Seven models ranging from this Hunter model to laminate varmints, carbon fibre stocks and barrels.

Here in the states the Sako rifles have always been highly regarded. Hard not to choose the .308 win for normal deer and elk hunting distances. Very impressed with the near one hole groups you attained with a sporter weight barrel. For the non barrel burner calibers it's worth spending the extra 1k or so to get a premium quality rifle. One will damn near never burn out the barrel of a .308 win hunting rifle in their lifetime. I like the relatively light weight of the gun as well. No carbon stock and muzzle break needed in your configuration. The Sako 90 looks to be a serious contender for my next rifle. Great review!

I use the same exact setup for shooting prairie dogs with my Sako 85 204. Check your back rest. You are twisting it to get the correct elevation. Try setting up so the stock slides exactly down the center. I use 6"x6" pieces of 3/4" wood under the bag to get the elevation close then slide the bag back and forth for final adjustments. That gives me better groups. My Sako 85 300Win prefers Barns TTSX over all other factory loads I've tested. I shoot 150gr which are extremely fast.

It’s a good step up from the 85. I had an 85 in 2022 but it would not eject properly no matter what I did with it. I think this is the reason the 90 now has the double plunger. So far I’ve only seen short actions stainless/wood only with a weight of 7.3lbs 308/6.5 Creedmore and the same stainless/wood in the 7 Rem n 300 Win Mag at 8.2lbs Sako says they are chambering 270/06 etc but no weight or specifics is listed in the Hunter model. I suspect the 06 n 270 will be closer to the 6.5 Creed weight of 7.3lbs? For the price of these guns here in Canada you’d think they’d put on a decent recoil pad instead of that hard red hockey puck material they use. Since my last comment I contacted Stoeger Canada and the Hunter blue/wood model is only available by order and must be paid up front, delivery is a minimum of 18 months and this is in 270, 30-06 or other standard length action. One gun store mentioned Sako is having troubles with production so 🤷🏾‍♂️

My ordinary Remington BDL in 30/06 will poke all three rounds into a single jagged hole at 100 yards with 150 grain Sierra Pro Hunter bullets. This older 30/06 shot 1 inch groups with Remington factory 150 grain core Lok bullets before I started handloaded with fireformed brass. Once the fireformed brass was necksized only and chamfered inside and out, the next hurdle was to find the perfect overall length of the cartridge and after many trips to the range, I finally found that sweet spot at 3.283. IT WAS WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT TO GET THIS REMINGTON GOING LIKE A DAM TARGET RIFLE.

The CONSISTENCY of accuracy from both sako and tikka has always been extremely exaggerated by their following. Most people that claim MOA accuracy don’t even understand it and then the try to prove it with 3 shot groups when 5 is the standard. I get it, if it is a thinner hunting barrel and there is no need to shoot 5 shots as the barrel will start to walk, but don’t call it an MOA gun with 3 shots
