@@TheCharismaticVoice Lemmy is about as iconic as they come, he embodied the true spirit of rock & roll like few others. His image belied a certain earthy wisdom and kindness of heart. He didn't have what you would call a pretty singing voice, but similarly to someone like Ozzy, the sound of his whisky-soaked vocals was archetypal for heavy rock, metal, and punk. There is a lot of friendly and sometimes not so friendly rivalry between the various genres and subgenres of heavy music, but Motörhead and Lemmy are one of the few that command respect among all of them.

Yes yes yes! All of it. That guitar solo though, my God, had me gasping!

"Lux Æterna" is Latin for "Light Eternal". It is sung during a Requiem Mass during a funeral. James explains that this song (and album "72 Seasons") represents a look back on growing up and everything that life has thrown at you and forgiving yourself for your bad choices and actions (hence the funeral Mass theme of "dying" to them. A new beginning amd your pumped up to get it started!

@The Charismatic Voice I so hope you do get to see Metallica! The first time I saw them was 1988 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Volume limits were higher then. It was a wall of sound, roaring and writhing like the baddest D&D boss beast you'd never want to face - but actually you would 😉 It was rough and unrefined but the pure energy was electrifying! I'm going to Download in England in June where they are headlining TWICE at the same festival; 2 completely different sets! Taking my young nephews there for their first metal gig. It's gonna be a stormer! 😃

I think Lux Æterna and the whole vibe of the song, plus the "Full speed or nothing" is in some way a little reference to Hit The Lights where they basically announced their arrival and that "Once we've started we'll never stop again. Hit the Lights". And now it's basically: we've gone all this way and we're not stopping. We go forever at full speed. Hit the Lights Eternally. They also reference Lighting the Nation, the Diamond Head album. The whole song is an ode to their roots in the New Wave of British heavy metal, and Kill' em All. Including the little reprise at the end, reminiscent of Overkill by Motorhead

I think it's a remembrance of those who have passed. Lux Aeterna is the "Liturgical Chant" during the Catholic Requiem Mass as a remembrance of the dead. Might explain the Motorhead/Metallica mix of sounds. We've lost a lot of Metal and Hard Rock Legends in the past few years!

I agree with what you said here. I also think it's important to note that this album will be released 40 years after their first album. Kind of a reprisal of their whole career with the 40 year mark being the completion of a significant era, now leading into the next.

They apparently had an amazing time doing it and it just flowed right out all by itself. Personally I think this song is a very well crafted tribute to their old mentors, like Judas Priest and Motorhead: it's easy to detect some similarities with songs like "Overkill" and "Rapid Fire", but they were able to elaborate these former ingredients and mix them with their own style. In addition to this I would like to underline the high quality of both mixing and production, the sound is astounding. Also, this song absolutely rips and I hope the whole album follows suit.

He has worked on his vocals, and in truth, he didn’t really start “singing or trying to sing” until he worked with Bob Rock on the Black Album, so I believe they went 4 albums without James really having any real “singing” help from anyone else. It's the drums. This is the best drumming Lars has done since the Justice LP. He sounds like Motorhead's "Philthy Animal" Phil Taylor.

@@crankfastle8138 Regardless of how you feel about Lars, they have been a band now for 40 years and they are all pushing 60. He is going to have to take some shortcuts to play this live, and there is already a live version of this out and it sounds great. He's been their weakest link musically for a long time, but if he can do this live in some form I'm good with how it gets done if it sounds great.

The double-kick drum is this song is just so absolutely driving. A lot of people like to knock Ulrich's playing, and I'm not a drummer so I can't comment on that technical side, but he does what he does with so much passion and fury. When this song was released, people questioned whether he could do it live, and then they released the live version of it from their "All Within My Hands" show and he just killed it. The only thing I'm mad about at the moment is that I have to wait until November to see them live again.

This is pretty basic to be honest - it's double bass, buts it's not super fast, and the snare is on the beat so it's easy to keep on track. He does a weird off beat tom fill after the first chorus which is a bit off putting, but this is pretty straight ahead. Anyway, Lars has nothing to prove. He did it all on RTL - AJFA, he was then quite up front that he wanted to play for the song and simplify.

Basically a rhythm drummer if you will. Kinda sucks IMO. They/he could be so much better now. Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo proved it. Sad to me.

Seeing the title of this song had my brain confused for a second. In my school time in Denmark I was told that vowels like 'Æ' was not in the english language, but then it dawned on me that this title is in latin and not english 😅

The "tion" pronunciation he has (like "shone" - past tense of shine) is something he developed long ago. On the song "Blackened" (off the '88 album, ...And Justice For All) there's an interlude where he sings 8 (?) "tion" words with that "shone" pronunciation.

Blackened is definitely worth your time, Elizabeth. There’s an ugliness to it, in keeping with the subject matter. Lyrically very strong. The music invokes a sense of panic and alarm. All up another monster from the Metallica boys

@@TheCharismaticVoice If you are going to do Blackened, do yourself a favor and do the Seattle 89 live version of it. It's a pretty stellar live version overall of that song, and basically Metallica in their musical prime just letting it go on stage. I would say listen to the album version first, but it's a bit different from their other albums and you may find it lacking something. Plus you really should go into it without knowing what to expect. Bob Rock famously told Metallica something along the lines of their albums don't do their live shows any justice when he produced the black album.

Watching you analyze Metallica is an absolute thrill. Metallica has meant so much to me so it's rad to see someone appreciate them the way I do.

Song's a big throwback to their start. First song they wrote was Hit the lights, and the riff at the start right after the descending chords is so similar to Hit the lights. You also mentioned their influence of British bands. Diamond Head had a major impact on them, and you can almost hear it not just in the verse riff, but the singing. How James ends each line in the verse. The mention of "lighting the nation" is very likely a reference to Diamond Head's most popular album "Lightning to the Nations".

As many others have said, looking at their first album (Kill 'Em All) you can hear a resemblance in the "attitude" and the genesis of where they are now. After 40 years, James'voice is obviously different with age but it would be fun to see you compare then with now (btw, the aggression has ALWAYS been there). The songs Whiplash, Motorbreath and Four Horsemen would be good ones to analyze.

James certainly has worked on his voice! He warms up his voice before each show with a cassette that a vocal coach gave him after a few lessons. He took a few lessons back in the day because he blew his voice out during the black album tour.

After seeing how much joy and excitement you get from experiencing music, I have no idea how you don't just listen to new music constantly. Once I hear something amazing from a band I basically absorb myself in their sound for days on end.

Listen to the whole Kill 'Em All album. It'll blow your mind and you'll definitely hear that Lux Æterna is harking back to that time (esp in relation to Hit The Lights)

I love these reviews of Metallica and the notice and care for the sonic storytelling they do so well. Going back to the day so many were shutting their ears off to the intensity of the sound and missing out on what a masterful thing these guys do. Another great review.

The song references the crowd build up and anticipation before a concert. The way the crowd becomes one big family.

I love that song very much, i've been a fan of them since 1985, i was 12 years old and they have a big place in my heart, their music helps me so much. I met James by chance in NY in front of my hotel back in september 2016 and he was super nice to me, i was kind of shy and impressed, he's a tall guy and i'm the same height as Lars.😆 He told me he wouldn't sign anything of take a selfie with him and it was ok for me because i'm not looking for that when i meet a rockstar anyway, he told me he prefers talking to the person instead of taking a selfie and the person leaves right away, so i had the chance to chat with him for a good 15 minutes before he had to leave.

I absolutely love the way you have undoubtedly been “spoiled by metal”. As a preachers kid, I spent quite a few years in choirs and quartets but secretly, my outlet for emotion was always bands like Metallica, Queensryche, Pink Floyd, etc… You are absolutely awesome and I can’t help but smile when I watch your reaction vids. ❤

I knew this reaction was coming, was just curious as to when. I could remember thinking as I was checking out some of the other reaction channels taking a look at this song, "Oh my, Elizabeth is going to have fun with this one!" Please. I really want to see the analysis of the song "The Outlaw Torn". A very powerful and heartbreaking song. James said that the song is about "the death of a loved one and trying to find a replacement that will never be." Live recording with a symphony orchestra in 2019. (S&M2)

This is for sure a call back to early Metallica and the 80s metal sound of the new wave of British heavy metal in the 80s while heavy and fast but was also melodic. This is a hark back to their earliest material and influences,the most striking of which is the double kick drums so reminiscent of Motorhead and "Overkill" which also contains a couple more false endings on top of the one here. James definitely did some damage with his earlier style of singing, which in my opinion was especially noticeable around the 2000s. But he's done such a great job to not only restore but also expand on his voice! Now he's almost able to do anything he did before, and more on top on that. Sometimes there's a rare live performance where he'll turn to the original harsh vocal sound for a song or two, and then go right back to his nowadays-voice. Just love James from the bottom of my heart!

That bit at the beginning where you analyze "shuun" is precisely the kind of thing that keeps me coming back to your channel. It stands out for me and I wrestle with it.

Hi I'm new to the channel and I absolutely adore the fact that you appreciate Metallica as much as I do!

I'm looking forward to this album coming out...haven't really gotten into the last few albums, so hearing this and enjoying it was nice.

17:31 I think this is the right call about it being the show opener, though it presumably only be about half of the shows (they're doing two nights in each city with different setlists each night). The lyrics are ALL about live performance. The first verse says: "Anticipation in domination A sea of hearts beat as one, unified Magnification, all generations Approaching thunder awaiting the light" That's the energy of 10s of thousands of fans at any live show, really, but a Metallica show in particular. The second and third verses continue that theme: "Exhilaration, frenzied sensation Kindred alliance connected inside Commiseration, sonic salvation Cast out the demons that strangle your life" "Emancipation kill isolation Never alone for the feelings alike Amplification lightning the nation Never alive more than right here tonight" I hope everyone gets the chance to see one these shows. It really is an experience that can't be matched.

I enjoyed this song when I first heard it, but I feel like I have much more appreciation for it now after your breakdown. Thanks! I wanted to suggest a lesser-reacted to Metallica song that is my personal favorite - Bleeding Me. The live version from S&M is excellent.

I really love this song and your reaction to it is wonderful! Im still in awe of Metallica, they have been at this for damn near 50 years and they still kill it everytime!

You can see this performed live for the first time ever - they performed it at their All Within My Hands Foundation benefit concert just a few weeks ago and released the video on their YT channel. James modified how he sang "lux æterna" a few times to be closer to the proper Latin pronunciation. I'm excited to have tickets for when M72 comes to Minneapolis in August 24. 🤘

THIS! This is what Metallica was about in the 80s, and they still have it. I might be 53yrs old, but this is one concert I want to be in general admission, looking for a mosh pit!

Outside of seeing them live a few times on their most recent Aussie tours I haven't been more excited about Metallica since Death Magnetic's release which finally overcame my teenage dissapointment about the Black Album, which took me a few years and maturing to eventually appreciate and love. Your comment about this having similarities to punk rock at 4:55 is accurate. Early thrash was definitely influenced by the punk/hardcore music of the 70s and 80s. If you look at Metallica’s Garage Inc. anthology of cover songs, you’ll see several punk tracks represented (Free Speech for the Dumb, So What?, and several tracks by The Misfits).

This song has major Kill Em All vibes, and kicks ass!

I love watching your visceral reactions to the dissonant notes and pitch bending in guitar solos. As a life-long metal fan, these sounds are “normal” to me, and it never occurred to me until I went down the TCV rabbit hole that someone who doesn’t outright hate metal could react that way while wanting more (like horror movie fans). Anyways, I love your insights and your nerdery and the big smoochy kiss at the end of your videos!

Check out their first album (after the demo) Kill 'em All. That is the sound they are referring too, before the term thrash metal was coined.

I have been a fan of Metallica since the beginning. I like this tune. I have always loved how they interweave space and pace changes in. Keeps the song from becoming monotone and boring. Also James does sound very good now. I think he did kind of lose his vocals a while back but he sounds very solid and much more comfortable now! Sounds like he has found a great place for his voice. Sounds great and sounds complete....I don't know the words here :)

You're not the only one who nerds out on MetallicA. They're doing 2 shows in Chicago (where I am) and if you can get tickets to the night where they will be with Pantera, I HIGHLY recommend that one (even without Dime and Vin, it will still be a hell of a show).

I'm glad you liked this one too from Metallica, they are such a great band. In my opinion they have come a long way since there first album, they have really grown over the year's, I cannot wait until next month when the new cd is released

Although as a Cold War child and teen of the seventies I had heard Metallica often in my years, Watching you discover them is allowing ME to grow to a fresh appreciation of their music! You've done this to me with Rush as well! That's the great thing about your channel and your reactions! You have a knack of making the old new and putting a new shine on old metal (see what I did there?). I'm loving walking with you down the rabbit hole! ALSO!
