Steven Middagh I.respecr your opinoon, I personally have a bias toward manual.transmissions with many ratios such as the 13 and 18 speed models for this one reason: driver control. Let's talk about control in descending hills and deacceleration. I live in Oregon and hauled logs and heavyhauled for decades and have operated both manuals and automatics. Some of the roads we haul on are so steep, riding or pumping service brakes going down hill or over long repeated deacceleratiins will overheat the brakes. Our highway roads out here are really steep as well. If you've ever spoken to an old timer he could tell you at one time engineers designed trucks with water systems to cool the brakes, well today we still have something better, the radiator, the colder surrounding environment, or the drivetrain. See, what these engineers don't know that we who have been in the industry do is that with more rarios comes more opportunities to.keep the engine in the best possible operating range for the best engine braking. If you can "split" all the gears on the low and high side you are never more than 250 or so R.P.M. from your best engine braking range. Instead of using the 6 speed automatic and overspending then stabbing the brakes to control the truck then overspending again then stabbing you can keep the heat from the kinetic energy out of the the brake liners and put the heat in the heat sink (the radiator and exhaust system etc) and not only save on brake liner wear and save money, but you keep the truck in the same gear, maintain the same speed during descending a grade thus giving the driver better control of the vehicle. Also, there is less flex in the drive shaft, rearends, and axle shafts because there is less speed modulation. The heat also goes into the rearends AND the transmission where there is much more surface area for heat control and oil and air for cooling. The problem isn't that we have the wrong gadgets to do the job it's that the operators (yes I didn't say drivers) aren't using the equipment properly. Also for those of you who say you don't like shifting In traffic well there is a really cool technique called skip shifting if you're empty. The new automatic trannies don't really last longer than the manuals do either, thats a myth. For this reason there are several large carriers I know of that are going back to manuals. It dosent matter what component you consider, the responsibility for componemt longevity falls squarely on the shoulders of the operator. This is just another example of how some companies are trying to sell us gadgetry we don't need to do what we humans can already do better.
@bigrigben1202

I've driven both the Allison 6 speed and a Fuller manual. While I prefer a manual because I feel you have more control over the truck, that automatic can hold its own, and it's great in traffic.
