    I have 6 of these trucks at work, the park brake is pulled back to release air in the brake. which applies the park brake. The brake can has a spring that needs air to release. If you loose air pressure, the brake will apply. Also it the brake isn’t release, the trans won’t shift. These trucks need a full air pressure to release the brake. Also, these trucks need a full 26/27.5 volts for the trans to shift correctly, if the volts are low, the trans won’t shift, or drop box won’t be able to select the ranges. So, always maintain full air pressure, and high voltage for these to shift. These old trucks with the old wiring, can be a huge pain to track down. There are a lot of plastic fittings on the bogies that crack and brake over time, that leak causing it not to shift. All the plastic air lines, are metric, and don’t add oil to the brake tank, the system holds psi in the system, and will push out the breather if you add it. Always check it before starting.

    Its my understanding, at least on semi-tractors, when engaging the parking brake, it releases the air from the chambers. This is also a fail-safe that if air pressure is lost, the brake will stay engaged. When pressurizing the chambers, the brakes release. I don't know if its the same with off-road equipment, but I would have to assume it would be. Otherwise, if the air system leaked down, the brakes would slowly release.

    @@thomasryan2222 i HAVE seen air applied parking brakes, its usually on really old semi trailers. they had a valve so that with air pressure it would release the brakes by letting the air out. really odd and honestly a stupid set up. thankfully it is not a common thing anymore and is actually very difficult to find!

  • @gravelydon7072

    @gravelydon7072

    @@sum42guy2k They basically tried to copy George Westinghouse's brakes for trains. They work the same way as that but use the springs to apply the parking brakes vs the air stored in a brake reservoir on a railroad car/loco. When you pull the Parking Brake knob on a truck, it dumps the air out of the brake cylinders and allows the springs to engage the parking brakes. Which is why it is so important to keep them adjusted properly. Drive with them improperly adjusted and you will burn out the brakes. And when that happens, you won't have them when you need them. Front brakes on a semi tractor or truck are air pressure applied only and do not have the springs.

    If you look at the calliper on the park brake disk on the prop shaft the adjuster is on there. It’s a square head nut if I remember correctly not hexagonal. It’s a worm and gear adjustment i think. Release the park brake give it half a turn then apply brake and test. Repeat until it holds well. If you over tighten you will smell it when driven for a few minutes! If you run out of adjustment pads are shot👍

    Park brake = air to release the brake and drive and spring to engage the brake for parking. That way in the event of an air failure the brake will default to engaged. Are you going to change all of the fluids and filters? The fuel system, you should add a Racor fuel filter as the age of the truck and care prior to your ownership is unknown. Get your left mirror replaced? Kind of important. Check the pneumatic system for any air purification like filters, etc. The pneumatic system on big rigs is critical. I'd look for a mud leg to manually dump also not just the moisture canister. Can't wait to see this thing hauling big loads on a new project.

  • @shitloveaduck

    You will get it figured out Chris. Looks like the comments show you where the adjustment but if for the P Brake. The brake is applied when there’s no air in the system. That’s why in your uncle’s gravel truck it’s so loud (especially if you are standing right there) when he sets the brakes, but almost nothing when he takes the brakes off. When you set the brake, you dump all the air from the chambers for the brakes. It’s like if you didn’t hold air, you can’t move when you start in the morning until the system builds air. It holds air, shifts as it should. The top right button is the Trans Lock, the other two for differential locks you already know. You have figured out the HVAC. Lights !!!! Did you check the lights? I’m sure you already did. In your last video, you did say something about when you get the dump truck back. I suspect you are having it looked over and the Parking Brake air leak fixed. Then you will be able to label everything (your handwriting is neat enough, no need for labels) and then spray it with a clear so it doesn’t get wiped off. (If ya want only on the clear haha.) It could be pained up a bit,,,,, as someone said, nice equipment reflects in the work done (but all brand new equipment makes you just look too expensive!!! Hahaha). A couple of cans of flat black for the hood, top and sides, and you could be good to go! That’s al up to you though good sir!! I don’t want to spend your money,,,,, that’s for you to do. It’s already started from these guys that have nothing but time. They will hound you repeatedly in the comments to paint it. They don’t understand your work ethic. You don’t HAVE any EXTRA time!!!!! Haha. None!!! Except when it rains enough.

    Hey Chris on that C model your jake brake works by the foot pedal on the floor in other words the pedal that you would use like a clutch turn your switch on on the dash and when you let off of it you rest your foot on that pedal on the left-hand side on the floor and that makes your jake brake work and there’s also a button on the floor for when you have it locked in 6 Wheel Dr. you can push that button with your foot and it won’t let you turn the machine without taking it out of 6 Wheel Dr. or vice versa it’s been so long since I’ve been on a C model but I know the Jake break works by the puddle on the floor so check that out. But anyway I’m glad that someone sent you A diagram of the shifting because that’s the way it is on those C models and I was also going to tell you about the AC that little toggle switch is what turned your compressor on and off beside your fan speed switch but you done figured that out but anyway I think you got your dang good truck and can’t wait to see it at work so you and John in yawls family stay safe and keep the videos coming my friend

    Another thing Chris your brake lever was right on it think about it when you’re in John‘s truck when you pull the yellow knob out you hear all of the air come out that’s what put your brakes on it takes pressure to keep your brakes off so there’s something messed up on your lever or either you got a leak somewhere but the marking on it was right. I’m sure you can get an operators manual book for that machine and it will show you all of that

    I don't always comment, but when I do, it is something that I am very familiar with. Acetone will remove sharpie marker in a second. Go lightly on plastics as it will melt off the surface layer if applied too heavily and rubbed back & forth. A light soak of acetone on paper towel, move in one direction only. Also good for getting the first few rounds of yellowing off of headlights, but rub in one direction only! Good luck with it captain!

    I don't know bro but I think you got a deal. Couple little fixes like the parking brake and the mirrors. Maybe get the A/C working and you'll make some money with it.

    Looks like an old landfill truck...used for top covering cells, often driving over demolition which would explain nails.... great truck.

    Don't have a Volvo haul truck, and did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I think that the differential lock only work properly when it is in 4/6 wheel drive. It might be that trying to lock the diff when in regular confuses it and it won't shift. I could be completely wrong though. :)

    top yellow button is tranny lock and that's why it won't shift when on. We use to have a whole fleet of those old bulletproof trucks. Might be able to send you an old manual for it if I can find it in the parts room.

    Does the 'break on/ break off' lever serve to remind the operator of 'break' times? For the luvva it's BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE a million times BRAKE!! 🤣🤣🤣

    2 squirts of alcohol is definitely the cheapest repair you’ll ever have on ol’ Harvey. 😉 main thing I see right away, with your equipment appearance OCD ( which is a very good thing ) , I can see the rust and paint on the hood of this truck getting some very much needed attention very shortly. YMMV. 🤷‍♂️😉😎🙋🏼

    A little flat black paint on the hood , to keep the glare off and some TLC be good to go. I was going to ask about the firetruck but you said it was on storage , wonder who's maybe that guy down south?
