The new 27-inch iMac (2020) is here - 10-core Comet Lake with Radeon Pro 5700XT and T2 - and I’ve spent the last 24-hours hammering on it.
I’ll be back with a full review in a week or two, but if you’re trying to decide if you should order now, now, now, and you want answers, you want the truth, well… it’s literally my job to give you all you can handle.
These are the decisions Apple made with the brand new iMac, what I think about them, and who it’s for!

An oldie…but a truly helpful video for me. Best Buy has these marked down to move ($600 off), and although I have M1 laptops, I needed a new 27” solution for “home work” that works better than my really old iMac. After watching your video, I knew NOW was the time! And I’m not disappointed! Great job explaining the differences. And although its not your recent work, its typical Rene Ritchie quality of work. And we all appreciate it! Happy Holidays.

Great, really informative video! Thank you. 2 questions from me: 1. How much RAM do you recommend for running large projects in Logic Pro with plenty of 3rd party plugins e.g. Waves? 2. Is the graphics card upgrade to 16Gb worth it - how much of a difference does it make to video export/rendering speeds? Currently using a 2010 15 inch MacBook Pro, so this upgrade will be massive for me and I really can’t wait any longer to upgrade.

Would you recommend getting the middle tier (3.3GHz 6-core) or the top tier (3.8 GHz 8-core)? I currently have a mid-2010 iMac so I’m long overdue. Mostly use it for photoshop, some video editing, and coding/website development. I really want to wait for Apple Silicon but we have no idea when that will be and how it will perform for first gen.

Question for your next video: Apple has silently upped the base iMac Pro to 10 cores. Still, the 27” iMac with a maxed out cpu is probably more powerful and less expensive. Where do you think it now fits into the lineup? Edit: I mean the base model. Where does the base model iMac Pro fit into the lineup?

Hey Rene, I'm curious is the SSD soldered to the logic board? So what happens if the drive goes bad?? Can that be replaced? Or is this something only Apple will fix until your warranty is up. I'm just curious because I usually tend to keep my iMacs for a long time (years) and this would be a bit of a game changer in my overall decision. This feels like it is going to be standard operating procedure for Apple and all their new iMacs/ computers coming down the pipeline. What do you think the new silicon ones will have? Curious on your thoughts! Was waiting for this one because I was a bit worried that the new silicon ones would not have removable storage like this one (RAM). Now with them switching to an SSD drive you can't replace and Apple's lack of putting in another fan or setting it up like the iMac Pro's cooling system that has left an even more bitter taste in my mouth. There is a ton of room in that 2020 27" iMac they could have used to add this stuff. Makes me feel like they are more interested in making 3 trillion then taking care of their loyal customers!! I don't usually throw down 3-5 grand on a computer that lasts only a few years and once the SSD drive fails and you know it will, being left with a very big paper weight really sucks! Feels like they just threw this one together with parts they had around the shop! Love to hear your thoughts. Completely lost now on what to do... Please help!

My current mac mini 2018 was a stop gap from my 2011 IMAC. My compromises of 256 drive and no graphics card has me a bit unhappy. I want to run FCP Motion and want to explore unreal engine which is no go on macmini. . I'm looking at the top tier 27 inch upgrading the Storage to 1 TB and use externals for media. I will augment memory on my own. Maybe the original memory from the mac mini can go in there. My big question is on the graphics card. Can you do any tests Blender/ Unreal engine/ or maybe photogrammetry. I bet your (no rev A board) friend might have some files you can use.

One of the things I do is create virtual music ensembles and would, in the process, be running 25 to 30 simultaneous video tracks to make into a collage with fade-ins and outs on each of the tracks and some color correction on half of them. I don't need 4K resolution, 1080 is fine. What is the minimum processor configuration and memory I would need (on a 27" if possible) to be able to work with video editing software in real time so that it actually runs in real time (with audio and video in sync) and doesn't stutter or freeze? Thanks.

I need to upgrade for all sorts of reasons - I need at least the same performance - but do I need an I7 now or would an I5 do now the processor speed is greater and with more cores? I hope Rene can answer you, but he seldom has time to answer questions beyond the first hour. In general: Buy the best iMac you can afford. Don't buy more than minimum RAM from Apple. Any processor you choose will be much better than what you have. If you can wait 6 months for the Apple Silicon ones do so (the iMac might be later than that though).

The main difference between the new base model is i5 8th vs i5 10th and the graphics card. I literally just ordered, waited and received my 27" iMac from Best Buy BEFORE the newest model came out. It's still 5k. Is it worth going through the trouble of exchanging for the new one? are the spec differences big enough to go through the trouble? I know the new one has a SSD drive vs this fusion drive. Although I kind of like that I have a TB of space on this one vs the 256 the SSD would have. I already have a gaming pc with a decent sized SSD.

It is a big improvement for the same price. The $2300 iMac is about the same as last year’s with $1200 in upgrades... so you’re talking $2300 vs $3500 for similar performance. I would definitely exchange it for a new one and get more storage on the SSD if you can. Also, don’t upgrade the RAM. Buy your own RAM and install it yourself. It’s easy and much cheaper.

Thunderbolt for external drive and a NAS that has 10Gb Ethernet to the border router.

Love the design of my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and have no issue that the NEW 2020 iMac 5K 27-inch has the same design. Might be that I am OK with the large chin with the Apple logo that I use to move the monitors angle, or that I look at what is on the screen, am not watching the large bezels. Since I have my home office outside window behind my iMac's large bezels. The large bezels help keep the outside world from distracting me from what is on the screen. While looking at it from the front the device looks to be paper thin. The new 1080p FaceTime/webcam along with processing of the video image with the A2 Apple silicon makes it a winner in the NEW NORMAL of COVID-19. Wish they had gone for the 12-megapixel with Face ID that is in the iPhone 11 so we could have Face ID to unlock our iMacs along with the Apple watch. 10GB Ethernet port I feel is a must buy for $100. Thing is use to sell the original 3Com 10Mbps Ethernet card in the early 80's for $ 995.00 ( in todays dollars that would be $ 2,801.14 ). This leaves your options open when connecting to external storage devices. I am just going to stick with my Late 2014 version. One of the things that might have made me update is if Apple would have put USB4, and Thunderbolt 4 ports on this version. Reason is I HATE, HATE, HATE the Thunderbolt 2 ports that are on my Late 2014 that I now own. I just can not find storage accessories at a fair price for Thunderbolt 2. I know that with USB4 being an open standard the storage solutions are going to come out at a reasonable prices over time. In fact do not think my next purchase of ANY Apple device will be until they move to the standards based USB4 port. Now I am on the iPhone Upgrade Program and have upgraded every year. This more than likely will be the year I skip it. Do not think I will be missing out on much. Will have to wait and see. Thing is after another year I will own my Product Red iPhone 11 Pro.

Might be the right time to grab a new iMac. My iMac is a 2009 27” Core Duo 3.16GHz w/1TB HDD. My Apple store opened it up and cleaned it out last year at 10YO. It looks great and runs like a top. I added 8GB a few years back for a total of 12GB RAM. It’s a little slow (spinning beach ball at times), but works fine for email, iMessage, browsing, and even FaceTime. I was hoping to go another year with it, but it might be the time to make a move now. I looking at stepping up from iMovie on my MacBook Pro to Final Cut Pro, so this new iMac looks very compelling. It might not make it 10-12 years, but I’d likely would like an Apple silicon model in another 3-5 years anyway. Thanks, Rene.

I really hope you’re right and they completely refresh their entire lineup, face id, new magic mouse, new design for macbooks, imacs, and mac mini’s, that would be insane, I rly hope they’ve been planning this for years just needed to slowly transition the mac to their own silicon (64 bit, metal, catalyst, universal 2, etc) i’ll be really disappointed if they don’t give us all the benefits of the flexibility of their own SoCs.

I’d like to echo a previous question regarding performance when exporting video from final cut - how much of a difference does the T2 chip make over the previous (2019) iMac in video encoding time? Also, the main reason I’ve been looking at this over a 2019 iMac is the improved video card capabilities. Can you talk more to that in your next review, particularly with respect to gaming (I’m interested in MS flight sim 2020, but also Kerbal Space Program and Cities: Skylines, which can actually be more CPU intensive). And finally, how are the thermals? Intel supposedly improved thermal performance in their 10th gen processors, but I’m particularly interested to know how it all comes together in this chassis as other (non Pro) iMacs have been notorious for running much hotter (and throttling sooner) than would otherwise be expected for a desktop machine.

I have been waiting for the next iMAC to come out to finally get a new one since now I can not update the OS anymore. I was thinking it’s really going to be Something after only using my old iMac for so so many years. Then the Apple silicon Bomb was dropped. Now I don’t know weather to wait. I am real happy with how the intel iMac I used for so long has performed and I think I would be fine with this new model. But my big question is Will it be outdated and useless in quick time after the new Silicon iMac comes out. Or do you think I can get a good seven or even more ! (if I am so lucky like this 2009 unit). Thank you for a great review ! 👍🏼
