Yeah it's like three mages with spell attacks against one awake PC = only awake PC taken out. Then surprise attack critical hits to every PC. PCs wake up, and stand up, and draw their weapons Bam, second round of attacks. Everyone is hurting or is down. "Give up or we kill ". If they don't give up, hit downed PC for two failed death saves, and watch them squirm.

Easy explanation for "long rest" not being effective in a dungeon: Because you are not resting comfortably as the tension of being in enemy territory.

Personally how I would run this Short Rest variant of yours is like this: Short rests take 1 hour as you have to scrounge or forage for things to patch up your party (herbs to disinfect wounds, cloth to make bandages, etc). However, if a player expends a use of a Healer's Kit during the rest, the short rest only takes 10 minutes. I've always enjoyed the Healer's Kit Dependency variant in the DMG and I feel that adding it into your rule makes it more appealing to players (at the very least for my table)

I like the idea of long rests promoting character conversation. And I love that you're drawing from your experience as a coach, because that is super relevant information. I use a simple fix in my game: you can only take a long rest in a town other place of safety. This wears them down during travel, and incentivizes them to solve hostile random encounters without combat.

Warlock is my second favorite class, and my favorite caster class. But I’ve never felt like it doesn’t feel like as much of a caster, in my opinion. Yes you can’t be nearly as liberal with slot usage, but there are alot of different options through invocations that lessen dependency on slots. So it just takes some creativity and resource management But all that to say, I’ll never say no to a buff to warlock lol

I've always wanted a way to incorporate skills into resting. Performance, Cooking, and either crafting or another use for wealth for Accommodations. A rest would be more or less effective and take more or less time based on your Comforts effecting the quality of your rest. Sleeping on a damp or outright wet stone floor with a rock for a pillow on a hungry stomach and thirsty throat isn't equivalent to sleeping in a luxury bed in a mansion after a full artisan meal with your own private troubadours serenading you to sleep with or without some lovers comfort. More directly to the video: Hell yes, short rests should be 10 minutes. And I like the separation of Long and Full.

Sounds like time for a magic item. - The Bedroll of Rest. The Bedroll allows for comfortable rest in temperatures from 32F to 100F to feel like it is 70F. The hardest lumpy ground feels like a feather bed. - For a party with only one of these magical bedrolls, do you have the cleric use it to feel rested for healing? Or the Wizard/Sorcerer to rest enough for spell slot recovery? Or maybe for that fighter who is on her last few HP? Decisions, decisions, decisions.

I like the idea of adding a Full Rest. The one thing I think I would do if I implemented this rest system is Short Rest: You have to roll your hit dice to regain health Long Rest: You use you hit dice but they give back Max Dice Value. (ex you have a D8 hit dice you would gain 8hp + Con mod) Full Rest: You would get back all your abilities and full HP. Other small note. RAW says you add your Con Mod to your hit dice when you use them. It is such an underused Mechanic that this is commonly overlooked. I'm only mentioning this because you didn't in your example.

Another great video! I've made a similar system myself as a way to make gritty realism resting feel more satisfying while also feeling grounded. Instead of adding a full rest, I added a "healing break" which is the short 10-60 minute rest (which also uses some homebrew healer's kit and recovery potion/poultice rules). Short rests work a lot like your long rests with everyone getting arcane recovery. Long rests are a few days in safety, meant to facilitate downtime activities, with the full reset.

it really reminds me of darkest dungeons. It is a dark fantasy roleplay game and when you rest in the game you have to heal and reduce stress and everything with the character skills and action. So you don‘t magical heal but the group actually has to medical treat the injured or the bard tells jokes to reduce stress level or the houndmaster lets his dog check the surroundings so no nightime raid occurs.

I like it. I also have my own Homebrew for Long and Short Rest. Long Rests don't restore any health off the bat, but all Hit Dice spent automatically restore max. Bard's "Song of Rest" applies here too. Additionally, number of Hit Dice refreshed isn't set, but dependant on the quality of the rest (based on the Lifestyle Expenses on page 157 of the PHB). Outside of towns, players need to use skills to ensure quality Rest to refresh as many Hit Dice as possible. Recovering up to Max for both HP and Dice may take a few days, making Towns a needed stop, and if more Hit Dice are refreshed than your max and your HO is already full, a small amount of Temp HP is earned, meaning players leave Towns with a nice buff to start the next quest. Short Rests function otherwise similarly, but players that maybe don't need dice to recover HP can expend them to reset some Long Rest things, one HD recovers a Sorcerer or Ki Point, or to recover Spell slots. Breathers are a new Rest type and are shorter still, taking only one minute per Hit Die spent, but spending Hit Dice to recover HP costs twice the Hit Dice (roll 2, recover the higher, + Con), and Short Rest abilities can be recharged by expending dice similarly to Long Rest abilities during Short Rests. Regardless of Rest type taken, players can never use more Hit Dice than their Proficiency bonus at one time.

I actually would like to take inspiration from your system and sort of... alter it. I call it the comfort system, and it works a little similarly to your system. Basically, there are 3 levels of comfort determined by your environment and the DM, and each one determines how long short rests are and when you can take them, and what you recover on a long rest: Comfortable (includes areas inhabited by humanoids, an urban city, or the inside of a Magnificent Mansion) Short Rests: Lasts 10 minutes, can be taken while moving at a slow or moderate pace but extends the duration to 30 minutes Long Rests: Fully recover hit dice and HP Average (includes lightly wooded areas, well traveled roads, or camp sites) Short Rest: lasts 30 minutes, can be taken while moving at a slow pace but extends duration to 1 hour Long Rests: Recover half hit dice and half HP Hostile (includes frigid depths of the ocean, frozen peaks of the mountains, the drippings tunnels of a dungeon, a desert blasted by heat, or a lush forest trying to choke the life out of you) Short rests: 1 hour Long rests: Recover half hit dice Basically, depending on the location and environment (and possibly any spells or fortifications set up by the party), short and long rests have different capabilities. In the city you feel comfortable and can rest easy traveling roads designed to guide you, but also you don’t really need to worry about taking short rests so easily, and you can easily recover at an inn in a comfortable bed with a good meal. On the roads it isn’t horrible, but it isn’t too too comfortable, but at least the roads are smoothed so traveling isn’t too much a problem and you can easily find clearings and places on the side of the road to camp, with nice grass and warm fires. A dank dungeon is meant to be inhospitable, you can’t rest easy here, and these paths weren’t made to help you, and the cold stone floor is much more uncomfortable than the forest floor ever was. You can’t even risk the comfort of a fire.

This reminds me a lot of 13th Age's system for healing up. Although 13th Age's is way more brutal. There is no long rest in the system, your character long rests only to heal up using hit die and avoid exhaustion (so basically a short rest but longer). After every four significant battles, the DM decides you can then get a full heal up (this is what affects 'daily' abilities and is not actually based on how many days you rest). Personally, I do not think this a good idea. It makes sense that in a fantasy world where magic exists, that a long rest would fully heal up everyone. Rather than change the resting system you increase the players urgency. They want to rest up in a dungeon in the room before the big boss? The boss, instead, now charges at them while they are in 1 hour into the rest cause the boss will not let them full rest right in front of him (how disrespectful!). Or the dungeon could be falling apart or filling up with water. Add something that puts the players into a tight time frame so if they decide to long rest they are risking or sacrificing a lot for it.

ive recently started this attrition style as a player and I love it. I never realized what I was missing with the resource management and it makes the party more vulnerable. We have learned to be a little more wary of encounters and it brings more ideas to the table. I definitely suggest trying it out at least for a bit for everyone. It may feel a little restrictive at first until you get used to it but if you do try it, make sure to try it for a few sessions.

Short rests are 10 minutes and you can regain 1/4 hit die, long rests are 8 hours and you can use 1/2 hit die, full rests are 48 hours, heal to full, and give back all hit die. I also heavily overhauled the leveling system and magic system, so my full rests also give back lvl 10 and up spell slots, but that's a whole other thing. That won't be a factor till well after they break level 20, and they're currently level 7. Yes I'm very ambitious and optimistic. :D

This is really cool! I like this a lot and i actually came up with the healing thing but one of my players really didn't like it so we instead settled on "If you get knocked unconscious then you gain a level of exhaustion." I'm obviously late to the party but i also came up with a long rest system that can incorporate any crafting or extra activities into it: Basically during a long rest, characters get 4 "rest point" these poins can be spent on various things e.g 2 points to sleep and avoid exhaustion, 1 point tk brew a potion, 1 point to take watch (4 watch "slots" need filling), 1 point to cook a meal. I play on Roll 20 so i made a table with all these spaces and gave each player 4 character tokens to place where they wanted to use their rest points.

I came up with an almost identical system. I think hit die are underused so I also put a limit on spell slot recovery (slots level 5 or higher cost a hit die to recover). Rather than a full rest system I award extra hit die for good meals and staying in higher lifestyle accomodation. This encourages PCs to stay in a decent inn. What I realised is that 5e design means wounds have less effect on health (hit points) and more of an effect on ability to recover while adventuring (hit die). But because the designers didn’t come up with a whole lot of hit die taxes the design does not hang together

I've found for stuff like the arcane recovery on the "short Long Rest," you would double the effectiveness for that class. For example, me and a few of my friends made a D&D spell-learning system for all classes since our campaign is modified to go to level 100. To balance out just taking the feature from the wizard, we halved the time it takes them to learn spells with that system.

I’m quite sure that the meta gamers in the community will have a field day with changing a short rest to ten minutes. To discourage your group from abusing short rests after using up their abilities or stubbing a toe, you can always interrupt the rest with wandering monsters. In the event of players attempting to abuse these variant rules, I would add in that a character can only benefit from a short rest once per in-game hour.

I've been watching some of your videos on homebrew. What I don't like about your homebrew ideas is they don't simplify the game, the complicate it by adding more stuff for everyone to learn. Here's how to fix resting issues: Option 1. Use the Gritty Realism rest variant of 8 hours for a short rest, 7 days for a long rest rule in the DMG page 267. Option 2. Eliminate 5e rests, use Old School Healing, Rest, and Bedrest instead: Recover all spell slots (and powers) and 1 hit point after completing one night sleep, 2 hit points if you stayed in bed all day. This encourages the players to avoid damage, fight smarter, and rely more on expendable healing resources.

The way I handle short and long rests is that short rests are 10 minutes, and basically serve as a moment to catch your breath and adds additional use to people with proficiency in medicine as they can use med kits to patch up the party during this period with limited effectiveness. As for long rests I make them last for 2 hours, and they basically serve as a meals allowing the party to heal using their hit dice. However, like the dungeon coach I add full rests which are 8 hours, and these refresh hit dice and full heal the catch is the party must be able to. I also worked this system into my other home brew making some of the abilities make more sense abilities more balanced.

I have 4 different types of rests. A breather which is 10 minutes and allows you to spend a single hit dice. You can do as many breathers in a row as you want. A short rest as per RAW A long rest as per RAW And a Full rest which restores all hit dice as well as all hit points.

  • @loganreed291

The new campaign I just started the players opted to use a bunch of optional rules from the DMG. Healer’s Kit Dependency - can't spend hit dice during rests unless a healer's kit is used on them. Healing Surges - once per short / long rest a player can spend an action to spend hit dice to heal. (and they regain all hit dice at the end of a long rest instead of half) Slow Natural Healing - instead of regaining all hp after a long rest they have to spend hit dice. Gritty Realism - short rests now take 8 hours and long rests take a week. All of these combined slow the group down and make them think hard before rushing into combat. Suddenly that dungeon crawl seems a lot harder, and the long rests taking a week works nicely with the week of downtime activity. Which makes the players think about and use their background more. I love all of it and they seem to be enjoying it as well. It keeps the threat and tensions high while out adventuring but still allows for RP with downtime. Honestly couldn't recommend it more.

I was thinking of maybe dividing lost rests in 3 parts. Characters with access to "Trance" must meditate for 2.5 hours, while other characters must sleep for 5 hours. What do you think? Or is this too strong then? Honestly I especially like the RP part of this homebrew, but I still want to maintain some of the mechanics. That's why I thought of this modification.

Love the hit die usage, they’re so under utilized. I do a similar thing making hit die a resource to be managed. But I don’t give the players half HP recovery after the long rest but I do reset their number of hit die after the long rest. If they use all their hit die during short rests well...that’s going to be a rough night of sleep. I don’t screw with class ability recovery. But I like how these limits make the bard’s song of rest much more useful. Also the use healer’s kit and medicine skills to help patch people up during a short rest as well. My players tend to actually use potions and scrolls more often than when running RAW in my experience.

For a short rest, only 1 hit die allowed,; for a long rest you can use as many hit dice as you have left and you gain back half after a rest, also only 1 long rest per day allowed. Magic healing and potions becomes much more valuable even outside combat with these resting rules. I recommend using this only.for experienced players that like a challenge.

Madcanard I respect that RAW loyalty, for sure! Glad to get ya thinking! I usually run it as 2 short and 1 long per day, BUT if extraneous circumstances arise I’ll tweak that, which is always a fun twist too. But yea I should have mentioned that in this video!! Writing that down for next time!

Now you got me wanting to make resting an entire mini game. Like giving the players one free short and long rest, but after that they have to start rolling saving throws or "bad things" might interrupt their rest. Triggering an encounter, or maybe a one round skill challenge. To make things a little more fair for the wizards non-wizards have to choose between an arcane recovery or a physical one (spell slots or HP), while wizards get both. That makes things a little more fair for the non-casters as well.

On the addition of temporary HP after a full rest, I've been experimenting with letting my players really immerse themselves in the resting, imagining themselves making meals, strumming instruments and singing along, playing dice or other such, chatting, generally having a good time, and in return I let them roll for temp HP. I've come to seeing max HP as the baseline at which they can stay if they just grit their teeth and struggle through, and that eating well and having a good time can increase that significantly. Now that they're level 4, I'm thinking of letting them roll a number of hit dice equal to their proficiency bonus and add their Con mod, as well as an additional hit die in the morning if they have a good and hearty breakfast. This temporary HP only lasts until the next morning, so they can't stack it for days. Obviously, making such a ruckus, cooking up aromatic food, or even just making a fire are all highly conspicuous and might draw unwanted attention, but I'm loving the increased freedom and the immersion it provides, and they've been careful with it so far anyway.

You should do write ups of these homebrew rules on Google Docs or Homebrewery or GM Binder or something. Having it presented nicely in print would make it a lot easier to use. Great video, as always!

I'm looking for comments on how to work Dreams Druid ability Hearth of Moonlight and Shadow into this. I'm thinking if that is running, it meets the qualification for a Full Rest, though can it be used for a Full Rest? Should it be active uninterrupted for a Full Rest, just for a Long Rest, or 8 hours of a Full Rest? If the last option, then can it be restarted every 8 hours until the Full Rest is done? Is there another way someone has it working? I look forward to hear what everyone thinks.

The challenge with increasing the usefulness of a short rest beyond the rules as written, is that some classes benefit far more from a short rest than others. So to restore balance, you’ll need to find additional ways to tweak class rules. You address some of this, but it isn’t clear how this would work aside from being a general idea. Maybe instead, just tell the players “it isn’t possible to do any restorative rest and/or sleep where you are now: it’s too dangerous and the constant state of alert is too stressful for any attempt at a rest to be effective.” The other problem though, is if I cast a protective portal-type rest spell like mordenkainen’s, then guess what? Our party is going to take the newfangled long rest regardless of the home brew. I am not saying these ideas aren’t good, because they are, but at the end of the day, a story-based solution is superior to an attempt to micromanage firm rules.

I definitely agree that you have to fit these to your group/ classes/ story I just find that this system lets the story take center stage and is my “baseline” rest to adjust from (10 min and 6 hours vs 1 hour and 8 hours) Totally agree with you though! Story > Systems

The Dungeon Coach - I do like the way you are thinking through the issues, and I especially like WHY you are exploring this (to speed up the game; to increase immersion and role play). I think a lot of GM/DMs do not always embrace the power they have at their disposal to create an experience. Part of what players love, is to make plans on how to tackle challenges based on a consistent rule set, and anther part of what players love, is the unexpected and the adventure... perhaps in equal measure. That makes home brew rules kind of difficult to change in any formal sense. However, even using the RAW, almost every player would respect “it’s not possible to rest at this location and at this time for X reason” or, to equally respect fast-tracking a rest because the location is so safe and well-secured. I think too many people are focused on “flaws” in the rules, rather than understanding that all rules are nothing more than guidelines that are completely in service to the gameplay experience. For example, how a given wizard spell works can depend greatly on 1000s of different game environment factors, regardless of what the rules say.

robert schaefer that’s very well said! I did that with the RAW for this for years and was just like “screw it” and then changed it. But I definitely think it’s a big DM skill to adapt to the RAW and keep it going smooth
