"The next step seems to be abandoning character classes altogether and buying class abilities with points as well." => This right here is WHY folks haven't... at least for D&D. D&D, for whatever reason, is terribly attached to their character classes. Other system ( GURPS) took the plunge decades ago. Backlash, be it perceived, expected, or actually experienced, has kind of retarded D&D & it's descendant games from going the same route. Plus, the strong dislike of feats a lot of players developed over the course of 3rd & 4th editions. There is a reason feats are *optional* rules in 5E. This system, and really ANY point-buy focused system, MUST go down the design route of feats or at least very feat-like things. If I'm sounding negative... let me be clear, I LOVE the idea, classes are the single biggest sticking point with me & D&D. But because it is also because my opinion is so divergent from the D&D norm that I know where the pain point is, and that is because a huge portion of the D&D player base actually like restrictive the pigeon-holing of rigid classes, as odd as that seems to the rest of us.

Basically you get an array of 8 in all your stats, +3 ASI, a basic d6 hit die, A set of weapon proficiencies and spell casting at level 3(you can give up spellcast at level 3 or weapon proficiencies, in exchange for more points, but they are permanent give ups)

All the players will be the same race and this allows for flavor, and I'll probably add some extra stuff for homebrew/world reasons reasons. Basically, 8 in stat Array, +4 for ASI(custom half-elves), and some extra spellcasting/fighing, along with ASIs during character level not class level(they'll still do standard classes, just no ASIs through class) Thus ASIs at 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 19.

Finally! I'm glad a major KZreadr has finally done something like this. One of the biggest things I dislike about 5e is their feat system. All they did was take away feats being free, made them in exchange for ability score increases, mostly combined feats to make them more powerful and even many of the feats also give an ability score increase... And they took out a ton of them. The only other thing I'd like is make a bunch of feats that are race specific. Pathfinder 2e has some but there aren't very many and some of the options I don't like very much or are copies of other abilities but at least it's a start.

Thanks for all your hard work and calculations, you earned a subscriber today! I had this sort of thing in mind now for a few years but never had the bandwidth to actually make guidelines for it. I feel like this is what 5e needed and this may very well be on the table in the next iteration of the game. I've been doing something like this (ad hoc, no guidelines) for my players and they've really enjoyed it. I even let them change up their characters within reason, so over time some of them have given up abilities or feats in favor of other new ones (hint: this is a great way to have players invest in learning new skills and parting with some gold for people willing to teach them :) ). Also, think magic items that give you plusses to certain feats, or even let you use the feat once per day. Really looking forward to using your system!

That loos like it was a colossal amount of work. I think I would be looking for narrative ways to award these sorts of things in the game, which I guess means I'd need to ask players for maybe a couple ideas of what they want, and see what I can build into the story for them.

I also definitely prefer the resources being available for building instead of the sale of branded packages which try to tell the entire story about who/what a character is... like "you should play a/n 'X' ", instead of a personality with a relationship to the world that they are in who happen to have these traits or conditions and a relationship to those traits or manifestations.

I like this. ive been messing with a similar idea myself I called the trait system were there were positive and negative traits (which were basically the same as the feats you described you just did a better job). in character creation I was thinking on having the players start off as normal, but if they wished, they could take one or two negative traits to get some skill point they could invest into early feats. these negative traits could also be given to players by some form of roleplay moment in game if they wished to turn it into a negative trait. (such as a character loosing their hearing from an explosion, and the player choosing to keep the trait for both rp and feat skills). I like some of your ideas though, and would for my games probably change it so your race starts with its normal abilities, but you can remove certain ones in exchange for skill points. so a trifling would normally have dark vision, but you could choose to exchange it and get an agile tail feat for example I also like the every level a player gets one skill point idea and am probably gonna steal that lol

  • @lecomingbegend497

I think you're method of negative feats and his could work well with a bit of tweaking... I'd have certain things restricted to particular races unless these players wanted to be a hybrid race. For example I wouldn't allow Dwarves, Gnomes, or Halfling to be a legacy magic class (Wizard, Sorcerer, Warlock). But if the Dwarf was the offspring of an Elf and Dwarf that would be fine, but most of the stats for their Dwarf would be an intermix that keeps most but negate some qualities of either race. They would be allowed to keep one or two as a sort of genetic trait that is rarely dominant (this would create opportunities if the characters ever had offspring of their own). I've never been a DM so I'm not sure if this would work

Jokes aside, I thought running an Ursala-inspired warlock patron this way. Your warlock player has the option to basically sell this hag their unwanted racial and class features in exchange for more power from their patron. I always though it was weird how your warlocks patron can't help them do tiny things like run a bit faster or take a hit. I really love this system; it's the perfect blend of Mutants and Masterminds with D&D.

I give my players a choice between a level, or a feat. We do a milestone level system with 24 milestones. So you can effectively be level 20 with 4 extra feats, or level 4 with 20 feats. I’ve yet to see that though, they do have to role play it out. We actually map our characters from milestones 1-24 as the DM I make folders for each to keep track, but mostly to build adventure based on each characters background and what they are aspiring to become at each milestone, and how to bring it all together so players have a vested interest in each other’s success. I also have them pick the magic items they want at each level, or want to see in the game. So I can actually see the power progress in advance, or item combo game breaking. As well as put the magic items into storyline with deliberate intent. I also have players make up an npc, one they get to play during the campaign. It could be anything or anyone they get to mini DM minor story arcs of their own. Only rule is no relatives of player characters, approved by the DM. This can be real fun with a group of FOREVER DM’s ;)

Here's a thought. What is really, really needed is a character generation game. One in which the whole point is creating a character. Maybe someone who is super dedicated to character generation material could find a way to "gamify" that. No need to actually play the character, just find a way to quantify and score character builds.

There a some inquisitive levels I thought my character will not use or do that, but the corresponding scout power for that level would be something that I would use. What are your thoughts on this type of mixing and matching class level powers? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. The problem with point buy systems is that people will make broken characters to make a character that's overpowered in some way. My favorite example is a guy with 1 arm who hits insanely hard with his remaining arm. In your system, I expect that someone will pick Fireball at 1st level. And it doesn't even need to be a magic-user. The rogue might be nuking people. Fireball at 1st level is basically "I win this fight". I once ran a campaign with point buy ability scores, but I added an ability score called perception. So a couple players maxed their strength, constitution, and dexterity by dumping their other statistics. Someone convinced me to let his character dual wield long swords (which isn't actually legal for man-sized creatures in 2e). This character was dumber than a box of rocks but was attacking 3 times per round and had a huge strength bonus.
