I love this idea, one idea I had for one is for my parties ancestral barbarian. She likes to meditate at night and while she's on watch to draw closer to her ancestors so I was thinking of giving her a watered down find familiar spell where she can summon one of her ancestors spirits to act as a guide and scout outside of battle.

More in-line with what you're saying: You could give them a few ancestors who specialize in different tasks that help like that mentor perk Dungeon Coach Mentioned. (Maybe they can choose when to use it though.) But, honestly having an out of combat familiar is pretty could too.

I love this idea and it is incredibly close to what i do in most of my campaigns. I also love the druid example because it reminds me of an a player of mine. She played a druid/ranger multiclass mostly sitting back with a bow, concentrating on spells and was basicly never using her wildshape during combat. We sat down and homebrewed a feature very close to the way hexblade-pact of the blade warlocks work. She gained the ability to expend one use of her wild shape to "summon" a weapon of her choice by shaping trees into magical weapons that allowed her to use her wisdom modifier for attack and damage rolls. We later expanded the feature to allow her to also use the weapon as a spellcasting focus and gain certain benefits when casting spells like Entangle or Wrath of Nature.

12:30 shadow monk has an ability that allows them to teleport between dark areas on 6th level and another that makes them invisible at 11th level. You could just allow them to fly while invisible or let them actually move invisibly through the area they “teleported” without triggering opportunity attacks, the latter would allow them to do stuff like a single attack half way through the teleport path or other simple actions (perfect hit and run ability)

If characters spar like you said and there is a barbarian and a magic caster sparing all the time. I would say that a fun level up perk could be resistances in come sort of way like if the caster i known for a specific type of damage the barbarian gains a certain amount of resistance to that element. And vice versa the caster gets some bonus to ac or hp based on either taking hits or something else. I would love to talk about how sparing would even work in dnd. Like as a mini game

I separated feats into major and minor feats. Major feats are just like normal but minor feats can be taken as bonus level-up perks. Feats like actor, chef, etc. that don't affect combat much but help make the character feel unique. I ask my players if they want a specific minor feat or something else custom for their character.

I think a cool perk for a ranger or druid would be to give the ability to Speak with Animals at will but limited it to only one animal type like canines (dogs, wolves, etc.), felines (cats, lions, etc.), or rodents (rats, squirrels, etc.). Or with a paladin or other mounted combatant speak with equines (horses, mules, etc.). At a higher level, this could be expanded to include magical members of the animal type canines - blink dogs, felines - displacer beasts, etc.

-Bardic Muse:- (soon to be called bardic moose) Bonus action Unlimited 30ft The bard can give someone "muse inspiration", its 1d4 that they can apply to any check or saving rolls. They have it for up to an hour and can only have one "muse inspiration" at a time. They can choose to use it OR use one of their bonus actions to give it back to the orginal bard who inspired them. These do not effect regular inspiration or cutting words. Balance: The players HAVE to describe or RP how they give the d4 back to the bard. Also I suppose you just have to trust you're players won't try to break it in a bad way. Its really meant to not limit inspiration because it's kind of stupid that they bard just 'runs out of inspiration' and also meant to be a great RP scene where instead of the bard consistently rallying the party, the party can now all together rally the bard and lead to great RP moments where there is no way the bard can't succeed.

My favorite perk I've given was to a pair of PC's that had bonded and become very close; a warlock & a wizard. During either of their turns they can ready an Eldritch Blast or Chromatic Orb, respectively. Then during the others PC's turn if they use the other respective spell and they are within 10 feet of each other, the PC that readied their spell can launch at the same time. Both spells intertwine and hit together. Now, the Chromatic Orb crits on a 19-20 (due to a early perk in the campaign) and the warlock shoots two Eldritch Blasts. If any roll is a crit all the damage dice are doubled. There's a few more finer details I left out, and that was one of two "bonded perks" I gave out. But I like this one because it leans into their signature spells and is self limiting since they can only do it as many times as the wizard has spell slots. I wouldn't have come up with this idea if not for DC's videos, so thanks so much

I once though to implement a type of Team Affinity table where similar Xenoblade Chronicles Affinity Mechanic. Where the more the party tried to play as a team, in combat, exploration and role play I would reward them with affinity points and if they reach a certain amount of affinity they get a team perk. However this idea got complicated in practice so I just scratch it and put at side. One day I will make it work.

I have a question. So I have an idea for a post apocalyptic campaign and one of the things I would wish to implement is that every night stronger versions of the normal enemies come out, and that if they see or hear any signs of where the players are held out, they would attack them. But I don't want it to take actual hours to run it. So what I'm trying to ask is how might someone run a in game long lasting siege combat, without it actually taking super long or getting boring. If anyone has any ideas to help please do help.

Love this. I'm going to use this in my campaign because we've essentially doubled (perhaps tripled) the time it takes to level up. I feel it can give a more grounded game if PCs take 12 sessions to level rather than 3-6. However, I like the idea of giving one of these perks at the halfway mark, so they see they're making progress.

Hi DC, this is unrelated question only because I don’t have Twitter or any good way to reach you otherwise. I got your Tomebrew PDF on the DMGuild and was interested in using the siphon cantrip for my undying warlock. Only thing is the wording is unclear for me and my DM. It says “choose a living creature within range…” Did you intend this to mean “any creature not fully dead” like not an NPC reduced to 0HP or dead body, or does this mean no undead and maybe even constructs since they’re not really alive? Spells normally point out excluded types, and the Vampiric Touch spell just says “a creature” so any creature type is viable including undead. It’s a cool cantrip, but please clarify since my DM is leaning towards “no undead” and we’re about to play an adventure featuring them! 😅👍

Bonus perks are fun, but why don't we change the 20 levels completely? Maybe a 10 level system and trim out the fat! And now when you level up, YOU pick what your next abilities are. As opposed to level 2 you get this level 3 you get this, no. You choose what you get next. Now some abilities are a little powerful so maybe those require prerequisites like fighters can't take a 3rd attack they have to obviously take a 2nd attack THEN they're next level up they can pick up they're 3rd attack, but then they may not to get action surge until they're next level. We would have to workshop it.
