The new four-cylinder diesel unit OM 654 it's the first from the ground-breaking family of engines from Mercedes-Benz.
We list the most important innovations of the new engine OM 654:
- first all-aluminium construction of a four-cylinder diesel engine;
- steel pistons with stepped combustion bowls, NANOSLIDE cylinder coating, fourth-generation common rail injection;
- all exhaust treatment technologies configured directly on the engine;
- significantly lighter and more compact: 168.4 kg vs. 203.8 kg, two-litre displacement instead of 2.15 litres, cylinder spacing 90 mm vs. 94 mm;
- specific output up to 90 kW;
- lower noise level and top vibration comfort thanks to a host of measures.
The new family of engines embodies over 80 years of Mercedes-Benz diesel know-how. The new premium diesels are more efficient and powerful, lighter and more compact - and they are designed to meet all future global emissions standards.
It is also worth noting that the engine family is of modular design: the simple exchange of individual modules makes it possible for variants to be configured without having to develop entirely new engines.
In addition, he interfaces between drive unit and vehicle have been standardised across all model series. More especially, all the elements of the exhaust aftertreatment system are now configured on the engine itself and no longer on the vehicle.

Here we are 7 years later and we can say that this engine is the one you should avoid! So much problems and so much expensive to fix. Timing chain, AD Blue line explosions, Rod bearings, rocker arms, tappets, EGR coolants, turbo leak. OMG the list goes on, and Benzo engineers didn't fix it yet, so same problems for 2016 and 2021 models.
Just like a good Jack Daniels: It's the diesel you have, when your not having a diesel. I'm sold!
After watching this i think i'll stay with my om648 forever ,sounds like a truck but runs perfect with no problems.

Agreed. The OM654 is a disposable engine... Aluminium block with a spray on cylinder lining, so once that thin lining is breached, the whole engine is trash.
Hopefully we get this engine soon. What text-to-speech generator did you use? It is very good.

Well, there is a mistake on the torque graph at 5:21 . Can you see it? 450Nm is not what the scale tells me. Peak Torque according to the graph is about 405Nm. Disappointing to see this.

The 2.1 OM651 unit puts out 239bhp safely with around 550nm... Surely the modern 2 litre diesel unit can output more than 120.5 bhp..! Otherwise to compare them is somewhat pointless...

There’s a 500nm model as well, they call it the 300d! Same engine I think?

Robert Lucas You have this engine too. My 2008 S320 CDi has the defective material selection for the oil cooler located at the bottom of the V. 2010 they fixed it using Vitron material. Now I have a permanent oil leak which once again disappoints me. I thought German engineering was the best. Looks like I will buy Kia, Hyundai or Toyota next. Warranty is now 7 years for Kia and unlimited klm! This saddens me as my heritage is German. Just like the harmonic balancer shaft sprocket material was too soft on the W220. What is the longevity of this “Nanoslide coating”? My guess, 3 years or 100,000 klms whichever comes first. Once that coating is gone, those piston rings will eat the Aluminium like there is no tomorrow.

O motor om 654 do classe e w 213 tem um problema grave acontece por volta dos 200.oooklm desgaste prematuro das touches e balancins danificando a a arvore de cames que a curto pazo tera que ser substituida bem como o material envolvente escusado sera dizer que o custo e elevadissimo isto se ficar por aqui e a mercedes nao quer se responsabilizar por nada ,vende um carro com um problema cronico e simplesmente lava as maos o cliente que se desenrasque

200.000km não é um desgaste prematuro. Normalmente só há partes específicas a aguentarem mais que essa quantidade de Kms, desde pistão, biela e cambota (o motor/bloco em si) e mesmo assim, tem de ter manutenção minuciosa. Com 200.000 Kms, há poucas partes suplementares que aguentam e isto é transversal a maioria das marcas hoje.

yes PSA engines are good, but the french wiring looms and the rest of the car falls apart and resale value of french cars, you loose so much money on them, the depreciate very fast.

@@danutavram831 this engine is fully made by mercedes and mercedes parts only The 1.8 petrols and 1.6 diesels are from renault
cam chain like at my daughter bicycle , max 80 k km and car will be need very expensive cam chain replace min 2 thousand pounds at mercedes dealer , if not engine come in limp mode , and finally chain can snap , replace engine probably 6 thousand plus , so decision is yours , old mercedes has life time chain

Piece of crap...my E220 D broke it's timing chain at 149K km. While the first chain replacement is recommended at 250K. Mercedes is not gonna pay for the engine replacement as the car is 6 months out of warranty...
