Mercedes OM606: The Diesel 2JZ

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So, that's the legend of the Mercedes OM606 diesel engine. It's an absolute beast, surprisingly reliable for a german product, capable of making big power on a stock bottom end, and probably the best-sounding road-going diesel engine ever.

I would say that the om606 and om648 are the two best. The 613 and m57 just can't handle the insane power bc of air restrictions. The 606 is a weak engine though block wise. It can handle around 700whp while the 648 can pretty much handle power to the moon with a girdle plate.

Currently pushing 260hp and 557nm on a stock pump with just intercooler and Chinese turbo for 150usd on 1.55 bar of boost without any smoke. The car is buttery smooth. Super easy to make lots of power, super easy, and cheap to maintain. Note that if you want it to rev higher you should consider changing the valve springs. With the stock springs, I doubt it can rev higher than 5500 rpm.

Having owned both OM606 and M57. I can say OM606 far more fun to work on than M57. I havent tuned these engines only serviced. I like the m57 more because its far more easy to tune. I have chiptune on E60 530D Lci M57 and it has somewhere around 300hp/600nm and 14 seconds on a 1/4 mile. But cons of m57 are that you have to remove some emission systems to make it "reliable" its not gonna blow up if you dont but it will give headaches with egr, dpf and swirl flaps. I have done those and it is so fun to drive. I like the torque of diesels. Ps. Very nice to see that somebody from US has recognised these EU diesels capabilities.

The 606 is cursed because it wants to be fully mechanical but it isn't so tuning is ancient and dumb. The m57 is in almost every way a more advanced engine than the 606 and it is also a CDI system. I would argue that the real competitor to the m57 is the om613 or om648. They are both CDI they both are mostly devoid of modern emission equipment and they both can handle tons of boost. In my opinion the 648 is a better engine because it is less restrictive when it comes to intake ports and it is all around less plasticy. (Take this with a grain of salt because I like the 211 chassis more than e60.)

It's a superb motor but the next one, the OM648 CDI is the best motor. It's bigger, twin cam ,24valves, but it has a much more advanced injection system, it runs cleaner, it's more efficient, it has way more power, it's quiet, it has a variable geometry turbo, it has more power in a more realistic way, and it's know to be even lower maintenance and longer lasting. They require oil changes every 12,000 miles and they regularly get over 1,000,000 miles. It was the last inline 6 mercedes put in a car and it was the premier of the modern common rail diesel in Europe the revolutionized diesel performance. It also came in a much better car, the W210 was one of the worst chassis for the E class but it had that amazing diesel. The W211 CDI is an amazing breakthrough with it electronic wiring harness, to have a inline 6 computer controlled mercedes turbodiesel, it incredible. It drives much faster and it's an all aluminum chassis that is resistant to rust. I have one and it's really fast, it has big block torque, it's lay down, 0-60 in 6.6 second in stock form, cruising 130mph with 30mpg or more. I can get 40 mpg on renewable diesel. no smoke, no soot, reliable. It'sa better motor but the OM606 is indirect injection so it's very good on straight vegetable oil. People can get at least 400hp and 750ft/lbs of torque when they delete the EGR, and upgrade the turbo to a large billet wheel with ceramic ball bearins, enlarge the intercooler and add on the Mercedes C30 AMG injectors and E400CDI fuel pump. And it's possible to get more power and efficiency with hydrogen injection or propane injection. High power OM606 are not drivable motors with holset turbos'. The OM648 using the same Variable geometry turbo still are building boost at 1200rpm and hit full boost at 1600 and make power between 2000 to 4000. It's a smooth, pliable, realistic power. It's an amazing motor, it actually sounds a lot like a Lexus with a small inline 6 inthe 90's, it's a creme puff, it's so smooth and light the way it builds power, but it's really does have the power of a 8.2liter Cadillac V8 in 1970 with the fuel economy of a 1978 Rabbit diesel. Once you start running it on Renewable diesel there's no comparisson, a gas V8 motor you can't afford make a lot of power, with the diesel it's extremely economical and environmentally efficient and you have have as much power as you want all the time without losing much fuel economy.

@rainbowwarrior2635 Most of what you say is true but not the part about the aluminium chassis on the w211, it does have aluminium subframes front and rear but the body is steel and far from rustproof particularly in the UK. I have had most of the Merc diesels since 1986 including w201 190D which was gutless, w201 190D 2.5 very nice car but in UK spec no turbo due to steering box on right hand drive cars occupying space where turbo sits in left hand drive vehicles, w124 300D very nice car but again lacking Turbo for same reason, w210 Turbo diesel fantastic car let down by rust, I currently have a rust free w220 CDI which is a lovely economical luxury car and w211 CDI v6 which i am dealing with the rust on the underside of and the wheel arches, if only Mercedes had painted and protected these cars properly they would be great, but they clearly don't want them to last, I have a relative who has just had to have the steel rear subframe replaced due to rusting right through and dangerously affecting handling and wheel alignment on a w212.

Supposedly the first year OM606 (which we didn't get in the US) got a mechanical injection pump but they all have electronic pumps otherwise. All of the US OM606's had electronic pumps. The Mechanical pump from a OM603 is a direct bolt on and that's what people do here in the states if they are removing the engine from its original W210 chassis and putting it in something else. In the states, the turbo OM606 ONLY came in the 1998 and 1999 W210 E300TD Sedans. The N/A OM606 was in the 1996 and 1997 W210 E300D sedans. Most W210 sedans are E320's with gas V6's so the diesels are really as hard as they say they are to find. Running and driving donor cars used to be dirt cheap even 5 years ago but people have figured out what they are by now and they've tripled in value. The late 90s S class did not have a diesel option in the US and I have no idea about the G wagon. TLDR: In the US you want the engine from a 98 or 99 E class diesel sedan and pretty much any OM603 injection pump. Send the pump out for a rebuild + bigger elements, slap a big turbo on it and that's it, have fun!

When Mercedes switched to the W210 chassis in 1996 all w210’s had electronic pumps N/A & Turbo. Here in the U.S. you can find the N/A 606 in 95 W124 & 96 & 97 W210. You can find the turbo in 98 & 99 W210.

Great video. Gave it a thumbs up even though I secretly wanted to do the opposite in order to keep this information on the "down-low". I recently gave my son my 99 E300TD. It's the same one that he rode to the hospital in his mother belly in on his birthday in 2005. He has been driving it for a little over a year now. So, we rebuilt the entire suspension and put a stage 2 tune and an HX35 turbski on it. Have the boost set low for now at 17psi (more than enough for a 17 year old driver). It is just shy of 400k miles. I want to get a spare motor to stash away, but as others mention, they are getting so expensive because people are figuring out what a great motor they are. Sooooo Shhhhhhhhhhh🤫

First used a OM606 because it was the cheapest way to get 500 bhp period. Back then I could get a solid engine for 150-200$ , large element pump for 1200$ and a brand new HX40 for 500$... Fabricate the rest. Just a stock 3-400 gas engine would've been over 3000$, as for tuned gas engines, to get +500 bhp would've meant at least 1500$ in ECU and tuning, not to mention the core engine cost, supporting mods etc. Nowadays 606s have gotten rarer, more expensive and standalone ecus have gotten cheaper

Few things to add. Nothing to correct. The USM only got the turbo variant in the e300td in 98-99. This engine is idi so It behaves much more like a petrol engine than a diesel. While they do make more torque than hp its nothing like a common raid. Maybe 50-60 more ft-lbs than hp. The major draw is its ability to drive a mech pump or an electric pump. With a mech pump from a om603, rebuilt with bigger elements, you can fire and run the engine like a carby petrol. This allows you to dump it in any chassis you can fit it in.

First OM603 vs OM606 and OM602 vs OM605(I like the 5 Cylinders more they make a better sound and Are overall Just a 5 cylinder of the same Engine. Later some of them will chance displacement by boring But we are talking about these 2 Gens. Also in some European countries theres a Luxury tax on Passenger cars displacement so 2.5L is class 1 Luxury and 3L is the Next one. The Tax can reach 6x the regular registration for that car. For class one it would stay around 2x regular. For above 3000cc class 3 it can go over 10x. Yes ALL the Diesel Engines in this Gen use the SAME parts. OM601/604 2L 4 cylinder 500cc x4 =2000cc OM602/605 5x500cc=2500cc OM 603/606 6x 500cc=3000cc When you buy Part's you just buy the Number of Parts Other than the Crank ,Cam, and Oil pump. Even those Only Differ in Turbo vs NA. And of course based on is it a 4v head or 2v head. But all parts will work in all Engines, as well as the Numbers match for 1 piece parts like Crank and Cam... So No 1 Misconception is 4 valve Engines and 2 valve Engines are different. Other than the Head FALSE. Minor changes to Pistons and tiny to Injectors. And some oil nozzle change. That is ALL. The Engine is the same. 4 valve Engines Can't even Beat 8 valves in Mileage. 8 valves have better lower end But Do not reach Peak numbers so Tuners don't like them, But OM602 and OM 603 are better Driver's engines. You can tune them and STILL have a great daily driver. I drove a 190D 2.5 Turbo with 390Hp and 450 Nm. It comes with 126Hp and 231Nm Later swapped a OM605 and It had better Top end But Crap Low end driveability tuned. Also OM602/603 do NOT come with Intercoolers that's also why the Power difference is large from the factory. 4v didnt gain much just the Top end and In regular use You don't even use it. Revving up a stock Diesel in daily driving will make people Laugh at you not With you. That said Turbos do sound very sweet from the factory. No2. There is NOT a SINGLE benefit to the Electric pump. And since it's the same Engine. The Mechanical Pump Just Bolts on. So You can Use it on the comparable Engine. The Only Problem is ECU will be connected to Automatic Gearbox in some cars and it will give you shit if You try to Put it in a car that doesn't have the gearbox or it will cause Gearbox issues If you ditch the electric Pump. Main reason for the Mechanical Pump is Price and reliability. Unlike Gasoline engines. Diesels generally Have 1 component that does All the work. The Fuel Injection system. And since again its a superior system Only a few parts need to be changed. That said the need very precise machining and have very high pressures. But The swap is really easy. What you forgot to say is Tuning a OM engine will cost you around $1500-$2000 to reach 500HP. That's the price of Pump Parts you need. That's all. Intercooler and Turbo are not included here, since you buy those for your Gas car too. It's the same expense. You are not even changing Much in The Injection Pump, Just the Pump elements, which are parts of steel that have cut grooves in them to give a specific opening for fuel to pass, these rotate as you press the gas pedal and Open more to let more fuel flow through. That all. These grooves have to be carefully designed and tune, so the car has proper fueling, but it's just a piece of steel. That's why it's cheap. You can Even use your own Pump and Just swap the elements and service the pump. You will safe a lot of money. So heavily tuned (wink wink, because you only Tune the Pump and add Boost) OM 606 can Go around 500-550HP and 750-800Nm of Torque. OM 605 will do 400-450Hp and around 650Nm of torque. That means your Biggest Expense is Finding a Gearbox and Diff that will not explode when you step on it. One thing I failed to mention is These are what Mercedes calls Indirect injection Diesels. Its still technically direct injection into the Combustion space not before the Valves, but In the Engine head there's a cavity(prechamber), between the valves, which creates a superheated chamber (open to the Cylinder through a smaller hole) and propagates the explosion faster. So these engines came Unloaded from the factory and are Lazy and sluggish. But they are capable of being snappy and partially this feature is responsible. It also is the reason for the Beautiful ticking sound these Merc's have on Idle. And for the end it is the best platform. VW Cultists will try and push the TDI but they can dream on...

E300td 98-99 are the only turbo models in the US. But 96-97 are non-turbo and are capable of being built up

I mean it’s 3.0L must be reliable!! It’s a great platform to tune since the engine handles 700whp stock!! But I have this 1.9L VW ASZ model in some countries is VP etc! That’s reliable af”!! Mine Passat is 26 years old with 300k miles on it with the original clutch turbo transmission fuel pump gearbox etc I only changed the timing belt when I bought it with 240k miles!! 131 HP equals 330 N/torque it’s not a beast but you already feel the power!!! Overall oldschool diesel German cars are great and beautiful!!
