I chose the Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak over the BMW XR. For me one of the draw backs of the XR was the riders saddle is a bit bucket shaped and didn't feel comfortable. I prefer the looks of the Ducati and the 170 horses are more than enough for sporty rides up and down mountain twisty roads or on the endless routes through Schwarzwald. Even at low to moderate RPM the Pikes Peak will make you smile every time you twist the throttle. I was surprised as how well the PP handles tight turns and long rides with passenger and luggage are just perfect with this bike. My Girlfriend and I just returned from a 4000km tour around Italy and we had a blast riding through the countryside twisty roads (even with the terrible condition of the Italian side roads)
Pikes Peak looks so good in person I would have that over the Bmw any day. I had the radar cruise control in Ktm 1290 SAS and it is great to use when you are not in mood to go fast and just criuse on highway.
Owned an XR. Traded it for the Pikes Peak. Not going back.

Hard to argue. I made a similar move to a PP, but from a KTM SD GT. Same feeling as you. The KTM CAN be a sport tourer. But it's a modded Superduke in the end--and the old, outdated one at that--compared to the PP. The PP IS a sport tourer.

Will have to see all the changes made to the XR. I owned a second gen XR, nice bike, but the seat was horrible. Traded the XR for a Pikes Peak, added the race exhaust & tune. The Pikes Peak is easily the better bike if you can afford it. More torque in low and mid RPM, better handling/suspension and it is more comfortable. Nicer looking as well. I am anxious to see the M1000XR though. I am sure it will be faster on a track, but on public roads I am not so sure the extra power will translate into better performance on twisty roads where torque is what matters.

S1000XR owner for 3 years now. Dont think this bike gets enough credit for what it can do. All rounder in my eyes. Touring with my wife for 3 week, bimble round the town and amazing on the twisties. Only grumble is the standard seat. Had to spend £300 to make it right. The price of the PP would put me off. The BMW triple black TE has 90% of the extras compared to the PP and £8 or £9k cheaper.
Ducati...own it and love it. I can spend all day riding in total comfort. when i ride with my friends that have supersports I have no problem keeping up in the twisties. Looks, sound, features, comfort, performance are absolutely amazing. Very happy with Ducati and so Glad they did't mess around with colors on their logo like BMW did this month.
When ducati realizes the pikes peak no longer the top dog Next year on ducati unveiling season: we introduce the multistrada V4S Pikes peak....we gave it the engine from the Panigale V4S and the oil from the V4R and gave the Superleggera aero package cuz we are ducati and thats why and it costs 65k and has 220hp

Multistrada is a motorcycle oriented to a variety of situations: distance touring, track days, commuting, even a little bit of off road... It seems to me the BMW is more a sports bike with the appearance of a touring bike...
Great review!!Thks!!
Fair evaluation. Let’s see the how the final production version comes out. I love my Multi V4S 😊 Think it edges out the PP for almost the same everything (19 vs 17 wheels) but comfort is better. Cheers

Waiting for the BMW to compare to my awesome Multi PP. Do NOT think the standard multi V4 S IS a PP. MOST things are different on the PP--from chassis specs--including swing arm, rake, trail/electronic settings/wheels/tires/Ohlins suspension/brakes/swing arm and front chassis dimension/handlebars/footpeg dimensions are all somewhat-to-very different between the two Multis. The two Multis are more different than alike. Coming from a very good KTM Superduke GT--I was nervous buying the PP. Not anymore. PP IS the best sport tourer with very good two-up capacity and comfort. Super duke GT is a 8.0. Pikes Peak is a 9.5. Will this BMW trump both? I am concerned this revver motor wont see the power peak much so that leaves torque/drivability between 3000-8000 rpms, where the motor on a bike like this will be used 99% of the time. We shall see.

absolutely fantastic review! WOW I loved this video.
I drove the Multistrada V4 Rally yesterday and a few BMWs Last year. The Multi is fantastic, but after 2 Hours of riding I can‘t sitt no longer of this Bike. The Seat is to hard and no matter of what Mode I drove, the Suspension could be a littel softer. For longer Tours I loved the BMW R1250RS. Two Days in the Eifel didn‘t do no harm to my back. 245 km/h was Easy and felt very Safe on the Autobahn. It‘s a littel bit Heavy and a littel bit high for me. But what a Dream of a Touring Bike! But I didn‘t want to spend that much for my first Touring Bike, so I bought an Triumph Tiger 1200 GT. I am quite happy with my pick.
I wonder if the shift cam engine will trickle down to the normal XR’s?

I dont think so as it could increase the cost of the bike overall.
As a Ducatista, and former BMW owner and lover, to me it's a toss up. Until final spec, pricing and a test bike from BMW, the Ducati rules! ...just like on the racetrack!
The new 2024 Multistrada V4 RS comes in at 192 BHP, looks like another comparison to come?
I prefer the looks of the multi, but I would go for the BMW, looks like the better package overall unless you realy want the radar, but I dont think those bikes will be bought for highway cruising for it to be essential.

It’s the gran turismo engine with valve springs, it has a much lower redline at like 10.5k but has considerably more torque down low and the mid range. Also with tuning, exhaust and a filter they pick up alot of power. It’s not exactly fair to compare the two because the Ducati has a more tammed down V4 which also btw has 35k miles “USA miles” service interval and like i said its a good road engine. I have a streetfighter V4 it’s amazing but for an everyday bike it’s way too much, the advantage with the BMW is its shift cam tech, when working correctly will give you the same torque as my streetfighter down low and all the same top end. The grand turismo engine btw makes a good 10 foot pounds over me, it comes down too what do you want A more streamlined V4 with a lot of low end or a high revving good top end power inline 4. But i do agree Ducati should of shoved in my engine into the pikes peak edition Just my two cents

@@Fernando90054 I haven't heard any bike journo make that claim, that the vibes have disappeared on the S1000XR. That's a bit difficult for me to believe, as inline 4s have a second order high frequency issue which show itself in the handlebars. The other thing is that some folks are more sensitive to this issue than others. Every inline 4 I've owned has had this issue and I don't like it. If it doesn't bother you, great.

11 ай бұрын
@@rlsedition yes , probably you’re right again on that about sensibility that changes from person to person. You know, like I know that defects are more popular than their corrections. But I can understand the argument about the engine type . When it’s tolerable, for me a little vibration, is a good vibration. Always has been to me. What could suit you well could be a bike like the Honda Goldwing. It’s the smoother bike that I ever ridden 👌🏻
@rlsedition
11 ай бұрын
@@Fernando90054 It's also what type of vibration, as the high frequency stuff bothers me where the low frequency does not (I ride a Ducati).
Why the jacked up suspensions, though? I just wish manufacturers started building proper GT motorcycles like the GSXS GT, R1250RS, and Super Duke GT. Take the M1000R, put a half fairing, a proper pilion seat and some paniers and that's it. Ducati could do the same with the Streetfighter platform and bring back the Supersport.
The proof will be in the riding but both bikes suffer from a race track engine shoved into a street bike. Coming from a 1260 Multi I thought the V4 Multi was terrible as it has little bottom end power and only gets interesting when you've long passed street speeds. As an inline 4 the BMW could be worse. To me there are just better engine configurations for these bikes, like KTM's 1290.
As soon as the warranty is coming to an end Sell it fast!
Cant imagine the new XR being stable at high speeds, just way too much power for a tall bike
I don’t care if these bikes are the peak examples of technology for each manufacturer. The price of each is mental and puts them far out of reach of the majority of riders. In the real world, in normal road driving conditions there are so many good bikes on the market at a sensible price which would easily keep with these machines.
Wondering: If a "screamer" motor is ideal for bikes in this segment. I rarely rode my former KTM Superduke GT and current Pikes Peak over 8000 rpms. Especially as this is for "wife to ride on" bike. Yeah--I tricked her! Of course--the ride will tell the tale, but I'd like to se a Dyno graph of each overlaid to assess the "area under the curve" in the typical road-riding rpms. My PP did achieve a max torque on Dyno of 92-ft. lbs at about 7000-ish rpms. Good torque. At reasonable rpms. My SD GT did 97 ft lbs. around same RPM range.
Ducati looks better, but those //M versions have looked badass.
Multistrada wins. We already know the shift cam is an absolute fail being used in the GSA. BMW just loves screwing with cams, starting with the s1000xr cam wear issues straight out of the factory.
Fuel economy and reliability could be the difference 🤷♀️
BMW, baby!
The standard S1000XR is faster than the Duke but then I would go for the 1250GS if I had to have an adventure style bike. The torque on the boxer is 143NM at 6250 vs the Ducati at 125NM at 8750... no contest. Also when you look at used bike sales the BMW's have much higher kilometers / miles and the Ducatis have very little use. That should tell you everything.... Why have an adventure style bike that is not designed for off road use ? Buy a real road bike instead...
So both performance variants, yet the BMW does get the engine to match and the Ducati doesn't. The MS is great, the main argument for the Pikes Peak is the 17 inch wheels, admit no off roading, so better tourer. But at a price.
