New African nightcrawler worm bin's first feeding - vermicomposting

Ғылым және технология

After the bin's initial launch 10 days ago, this is the first check-in. A fairly large feeding is administered with a plentiful amount of newspaper & leaves as bedding

Amazing your worms are not adventurous very well behaved 👍🏼 mine are crawling out and dead on the floor now I covered the bin with mosquitoes net clipped the net and another worms in five gallons bucket I leave them outside so if they crawled out they will drop in the soils and have chance to survive!

This is great! I have had my red wigglers since June. I divided my bin into 2 this summer for the same reasons you described. Security. I am hoping to get 1000 ancs in the next month. So excited!!!

I will definitely be watching this one. I just put ANC's into my second UWB. I had red wigglers in there and took them out. Their castings fill the bottom couple of inches then there's a couple inches of moist cardboard then I had a couple of toilet paper rolls with food inside and then a couple more inches of moist cardboard. I purchased a pound and they don't seem to be very active yet. Also they came in a very dark slightly coarse medium which I wonder what it is. I tried to mix it in and bring some cardboard to the top so I can determine when there are castings on top. This the first time that I've had ANC's.

Great new bin set up! I did try the food bundles too. Worms seem to like it. I don’t have cool Hungarian newsprint like you to wrap my scraps in though! ☺️ I just recently set up a new bin that I am loading worms into from two old bins that are overdue for a harvest. I completely filled my new big bin to the top with bedding (leaves, manure, cardboard, shredded paper, some castings) because I don’t want to worry about trying to balance food and bedding during the winter. I just want to quickly add some food every week or two and be done with it. I know the level of material will drop down drastically within a few months and then I will have to add more bedding. I do this because my garage where I moved my wormery for this winter is a little colder and doesn’t have good lighting. Last winter I had all my bins in the basement. This winter I’m only going to store the bin that I am actively harvesting in the basement. Great video!

Just started ANC in a bucket. Feeds on cow dung actively. But it always surfaces and not getting inside the bed. I'm getting slight odour too. I tried to aerate the bed to descipate odor. Even then it surfaces braving the light. Need solution

Since worms generally love cow dung, it does seem odd for them to be exiting the material. Is it possible that the manure was not aged long enough? Perhaps it is actively hot composting... making the temperature in the material too hot. I wish you luck figuring out what’s causing this. Thank you for watching!

Grit is needed by certain creatures - including worms - in their gizzards to help break down their food. In my case I use pulverized egg shells as grit. Thanks for watching!

I'm in the Midwest US and looking to start vermicomposting for: 1. Castings 2. Fishing 3. Free for wife's pet fish I often fish with Canadian crawlers, but as I understand, they're difficult to raise, so I assume that leaves me with *ANC* and *ENC* They'll likely be kept in my basement, so should always be 60-70° F (~15-21°C) Potential to use the garage in the summer if not too hot, but would get quite cold in winter. Maybe ANC would love summer garage, and do basent winter? Any suggestions?

Since using the worms as bait is one of your requirements (meaning that you probably want a larger sized worm)... and since you also plan to raise them in a somewhat cooler environment... you are probably better off with the ENCs since the ANCs are a tropical variety & don't so too good in the cold. But then again, I'm not familiar with Canadian nightcrawlers or what it is about them that makes them difficult to raise. If it turns out that Euros are equally, or even more, difficult to raise then you might be back to going with the Canadians. Good luck - and thank you for watching!

@@A-V appreciate the insight No expert by far, but Canadian variety, or Dew worms, is they like it really cool. When I buy use for fishing, I keep em in the fridge. For growth, 65 is probably optimal from what I hear. Anything over 75, harmful and appreciable time 80-90's will outright kill em. They also take longer to mature, and require lower density housing. I don't think they produce castings quickly. They feed, then retreat to the bottom, sometimes bringing food with them. Maybe give the Canadian and European a try..

There's nothing I know of that significantly sets them apart - other than (I think) that they don't do well in cool temperatures & that they really like lots of carbon rich bedding materials to consume. On this it is best to double check these things since I'm not entirely certain

I just set up my new African nightcrawlers in my container with Coco coir, within 10 minutes I had a few escaping. I had to leave the light on all night and the lid off. How do I get them to stay down? I’ll leave the light on a few days hoping they’ll get used to it?

I make sure the walls of my bins are dry by not covering the container with a lid. This seems to keep all the worms in the bins all the time. Instead of a lid, I cover the material itself with a sheet of plastic to prevent excessive evaporation. Thanks for watching!

It really depends on a number of things - but in your case, since you are just starting out, you might be best off with the red wigglers. They are a bit easier to care for... tolerating a broader range of temperatures. Good luck & thank you for watching!

They are a very popular worm for vermicomposting too. They eat a lot and reproduce quickly. And since your climate is fairly warm anyway, you don't have to worry about them being negatively affected by cool temperatures :)
