African Night Crawlers' Preferred Bedding

African Night Crawlers- They have become my carbon work horses eating cardboard like baby food. HUGE HARVEST OF WORM CASTINGS
/ @plantobsessed
The ANC are in my Vermibag little mammoth. In order to keep them big they will get spoiled. I have a plan to treat them like the breeders do with new bedding and food to promote the large growth.

I love that all the worm channels watch each other’s videos, and are so friendly to each other. I watch 4 of you guys and it feels like a big happy family. I asked Patrick a question one day, and he thought you might be of more help, so he sent me to ask you. All of you have taught me so much and I am so thankful that you do this! I have had worms for 6 years, and I never knew what to do after feeding them. Everywhere on the internet only gives you the beginning information. One day, about a month ago, I finally figured out that there are worm people on KZread 😮. I am so excited!!!!! Now I want to up my worm composting game. Again, thank you so much!!!!

Use home made EM-1 it helps to start breaking stuff down just make sure eggshells or chalk/ calcium carbonate calcite or oyster shells is in your feeding routine to help keep everything 7.0PH . I put rockdust alfalfa and kelp in my feedings too. I feed them pulverize with a hammer dry dog food also, workz great 🤷‍♂️ they almost instantly turn it into castings 5-7 days tops and it's gone turned into black gold ....

If you’re looking for seedless summer squash try Tromboncino or Rampicante. It sprawls and it grows great on a trellis. Resistance to squash vine borers is why I tried it and wasn’t disappointed. Huge prolific fruit with the seeds on the opposite end from the flesh. I grow mine on a cattle panel.

Hey, question for you! Probably not something you encounter with your bag system, but have you experienced or read anything about ANCs not tolerating being in their castings like at all? I'm having a heck of a time with mine, and that's kind of what I am observing... I did find one person mention this problem with ANCs specifically, but that's it. Not a lot of people seem to raise them, so I can't seem to find much information specifically about them. 🤔

  • @PlantObsessed

What is their reaction to being in the castings? Mine are in a bag because they crawl out of anything else I put them in. I live on a busy road and it drives them nuts.

@@PlantObsessed mass death. 💀 Ruled out pH and moisture. Changed their feedstock to chow only. Also had a problem with them always wanting to wander, so I have them in Vermibag totes. Problem with that is they never get to finish a bin cuz it gets crunchy, so I've taken to spraying it like every other day. I have reds and ENCs, and not had any problems beyond fruit flies. Now the ANCs are being handled with kid gloves, and they're still eventually going through mass die off after a period of time.

@@PlantObsessed now they're in split bedding in their bag - one half with shredded cardboard, the other half coconut coir. They don't seem to touch the coir much in favor of the cardboard. And I'm sure they're still going to die off, cuz I can't isolate the problem (other than potentially an intolerance of a certain amount of castings being built up, in spite of bin not being finished - which is only a theory).
