I talk about that on my channel all the time people with their false advertising drives me crazy. I know my red wigglers are pure because it took me years to accomplish that. i’ve been raising Worms 21 years now and in the past I did have blues. We’re talking like 10 years ago maybe. They are not bad worms. They are just unpredictable. Definitely not a beginner worm. The thing is the red wiggler will not breed with a blue worm in time one breed will overtake the population, and in my experience, it was always the blue one. I’m liking your videos ☺️

This happened to me! I usually just buy from a local nursery but I wanted to buy bulk, so I ordered from a “big name” that said “red worms” I bought all together 1500 worms and I wanted red wigglers… when I got them I noticed red wigglers were slow and cool with picking them up and chunkier. The blue worms are skinny and fast and they stay in the bottom mostly and red wigglers stayed through all the bin. In my bin the blues stay in worm balls in the bottom of the bin.. I’ve only ever had red wigglers never blues and I figured it out on my own and I’m still trying to separate them! I don’t want to start all over but never again from the “big name” I went to! Thanks for pointing me into the right direction!

Eisenia Fetida is the Red Wiggler, Perionxy Excavatus is the Blue Indian. There are others sold as red Wigglers also like Eisenia Andrei.

You wont mention them, but I will. The problem with Uncle Jim's is right on their landing page: "I specialize in Red Wigglers - worm composting. I’ve been raising Red Wiggler Worms and Mealworms for over 40 years. I’ve raised African Night Crawlers, Canadian Night Crawlers and Gray Night Crawlers. However, I cannot find a tougher, quicker breeding and easier composting worm to raise than the Red Wigglers in a worm bin!" But, on the product page it lists "Red Composting Mix" This is where the misleading advertising comes into play. Buried in the description of their Red Composting Mix is one sentence: "Your Worm order my contain several different compost worm species.(Eisenia fetida, eisenia hortensis,Perionyx excavatus)." These are the Red Wiggler, European Earthworm, and Indian Blue, which are NOT explained or explicit. Giving their scientific names without their common names seems a bit shady, especially when the general population does not shop based on scientific taxonomy. I will not buy or recommend Jim's due to this misleading business practice. Jim's advertises they do belong to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) which means that customers can complain to the BBB about this misleading practice, which will create a record of it. Enough ticks on their record and Uncle Jim's will be forced to fix the problem or possibly be removed from the BBB. PS. UJW is where I bought my first worms (3 years ago) thinking they were Red Wigglers despite the Red Composting Mix label which I took for a poorly written newbie website. I now believe this is an intentional method of theirs to mislead or obscure. Northeast Worms or Buckeye Organics will get my business instead.

Thank you for uploading the video and taking the time to share your insight. I agree with you that there are a lot of misleading shady advertisements and product labeling in purchasing worms across the board. There a lot of factors that contribute to this for sure but one that isn’t so obvious that’s worth mentioning is that most people buying worms are looking for compost worthy worms and in a well managed compost worm bin most people most of the time won’t know or care what worm is doing the work as long as work is being done and it’s easy and efficient. Sure, there are worm hobbyists that want to breed specific species or fish with specific species but if you did a survey of what people do with worms they are spending $50-100 to have shipped to them most are trying to compost in worm bins to make their homes more sustainable/less wasteful/ produce organic castings for garden and they are hoping that $50-100 purchase is a one time thing. Selling pure stock of worms, and demanding the higher price of such a product, assumes your customers are knowledgeable about how to keep pure stock and what to do with them to not accidentally mix in feedstock with other worms/cocoons. There’s just not that many customers looking for that compared to other reasons for worms. As a small business owner you’ll be chasing your own tail of product differentiation trying to sell only pure stock. It’s really strange that the whole worm farm market is dependent on price per pound of live worms, which also contributes to shady advertising and product labeling of worms/their products. Thanks again for the video and the thoughtful insight.

The Red Wigglers (Eisenia Fetida, which stands for the fetid smell they emit when upset) are excellent composters. I also got the Red mixed worms and have found that I have Red Wigglers. Indian Blue worms and European Nightcrawlers. Last year I spent a bunch of time separating out the worms so that I could put the Indian Blues in my Vermibag Lil Mammoth cuz they were always trying to split, however after a while I found that the blue worms castings alone are very mucky, likely cuz they are very small. I have since started putting Red Wigglers in that bin and if I mix the castings (from multiple bins) waiting for cocoons to hatch I may just put them all in the Vermibag rather than separate them out. The castings have been much better since then in the Vermibag. I will note that in late spring and summer the Indian Blue worms absolutely destroy in composting food scraps and I sometimes have to put water bottles in the bins to cool off the European NC and RW. The Blues also are better mannered when they don’t overrun the bin, meaning that if there are 100 blue’s to 1-3 RW then they get aggressive toward them and I have seen them attack wisps. Now that I have a lot of RW in that bin with them they actually seem to have mellowed out. The Euro’s seem to be super chill and have done great in my area which is damp and cold (Pacific Northwest) and that makes sense considering where they came from. They seem to prefer deeper bins, so they are in an old cooler and deeper tote. I’ve combined many bins this winter so that the mass can help keep them warm and I keep the Vermibag in the garage and sometimes add a seedling mat. I don’t sell worms so it’s not really a big deal to me, but I like having bins with higher proportions Euros or RW, so it’s easier to anticipate their needs. The Euros love carbon heavy bins and I know I can leave extra slow food scraps with the RW bins. My fishing friends appreciate the size of the Euros! Lol

Hello Buffalo! Orchard Park girl here :). I’m actually in SE Florida now as I ditched the cold a few decades ago 😂 I’m totally with you on the shaky selling practices of the big worm producers- it’s not cool to take advantage of newbies by playing fast and loose with ‘red mix’ terminology and saying red wigglers are in there when it may only be a very few and the rest are Indian blues. I started my worm business on May last year and am ramping up production so I can start selling true red wigglers by the end of this year hopefully. Are you planning on selling soon? I agree that we need more reliable sources of these amazing worms! I liked and subscribed because your video was great! And we new channels need to support each other 😊.

1:00 I am that kind of guy. It’s uncle Jims worms. He makes you think you’re buying red wigglers. It’s all in the wording. Indian blues happens to do a mass exit when it rain due to the barometric pressure. I wondered why my worm were mass exiting my bin. After looking closely sure enough I had Indian blues. I won’t buy from uncle Jims anymore.

Same here. I only went with Uncle Jim's because a gardening channel mentioned that name.. I think it's unethical to prey on people's ignorance the way that uncle jim's is doing. I bought a small little amount and I haven't had the problem that others have had. (I have an open bin in a temperate basement with a heating mat at the bottom. Eggshell cartons on top. It's pretty much the setup for baby plant seedlings.) I've only had one mass escape attempt and it was extenuating circumstances. Maybe that might help for your worms? I just wish the company had been honest. I was already creeped out with the idea of worms in my home. I don't understand how people can touch them with their bare hands or gloved hands. I can barely use a spoon. So I wish I had a beginner mode worm - a slow red one - vs, this meth head of a worm that moves so fast. (okay.. maybe it's the caffeine but it's decaf coffee. I just wish Uncle Jims had been honest.)

Same here. My first bin was an indoor bin from a "red mix" I bought from Jim's. The first time it thunder stormed, I guess the barometric pressure changed, because I awoke to find 100 of them dead on the carpet, because they climbed out the air holes. Complete waste of money, and I will never buy from him again or recommend anyone to him. I hope Urban Worm Company and Meme's Worms puts him out of business.

I love my little Eisenia Fatida, Andraiii, Vaneta. Also 5)3 Eisenia worm has a clitellum further down whereas the Indian blue’s clitellum begins at like the 13th segment, close to the head.
