    Hey I just wanted to say, I really like that you were honest and said that if you are starting out you don't need the urban worm bag. I will definity be buying some stuff from you guys once I get it up and going.

    As someone who finds too much information confusing and complicated, can I just say how easy this is to follow and understand. I’m in the uk so lots of things we don’t have access too or cost too much to get due to delivery costs. But you have made this clear and easy. And covered what we can get. I’m very impressed, thanks.

    I started my first Worm Bin in December of 2023 in an 18 gallon Roughneck tote with 1,000 red wigglers. It doing great with the light overhead and so far no issues with smell or escapees. What is the capacity of the Urban Worm Bag (2)? Also, do you have any tips when I transfer my worms and all their bedding to the Worm Bag? I know your product is going to make my life so much easier, especially the harvesting of the castings.

    I'm in the UK have just started 4 worm bins up. To breed worms for fishing. Hopefully I'll get some castings also to use in garden. But ideally I just want as many worms as possible. So have just started up a multi layer bin aswell.

    I put some fishing bait nightcrawler worms in a 35gal tote that I'm growing plants in. Will they die without something like food scraps to eat? The soil is composed of 60%peat 30% perlite 10% native soil & dead tree leaf top dress.

    Outstanding 8 min video, maybe I missed it, but: 1. How much grit per amount of food do I add and how often? I would think they poop it out so it available again, or they keep it for life in their guts. So not sure really how often or how much. Thanks!!!!

  • @UrbanWormCompany

    @UrbanWormCompany

    Yeah, I didn't really answer that one and to be honest, I don't have a precise answer. I don't even know if there *is* a precise answer. The truth is that I normally forget to add any grit and the worms do just fine.

    Hi Steve, What is your take on the shelf life of worm castings and is there any studies or science around this topic? I Googled this and the top 3 results were all different. These are straight from Google: #1 - 3 to 4 years and their performance doesn't decrease. #2 - They do not go bad or expire. They get better with time. #3 - Up to 6 months. Sometimes longer depending on the method of storage. Thanks!

    Question. How do you harvest castings from a set up like this?

  • @UrbanWormCompany

    @UrbanWormCompany

    You'd likely need some form of a screener to do it quickly, but you could also use what's called the Light Method that I detail in this blog post! urbanwormcompany.com/harvesting-worm-castings-break-your-back-or-break-the-bank/

    what range of temps are suitable for worm composting? would a bin in a basement year round work? temps would be about 55 degrees in the winter months and warmer the rest of the year. From wisconsin so outside temps can get well below zero in the winter months. thx Dean

    If you keep the bin inside, won't the food attract fruit flies? I don't have a garage and I think outside will cook the worms.

  • @UrbanWormCompany

    Fruit flies are always a risk but you can keep them at bay by burying your feedings under the surface and making sure you keep adding lots of bedding with your feedings.

    You never t9ld us how to keep the worms in the bin. When I have built them before in a week they are all gone. And yes I used the light the first 3 or so days. No idea where they went or how. Mine was 4 x4’ wood by 12” high. Plus it was on a concrete floor. O trace of them. Did that twice.
