NEW 2020 iMac released! Should you buy the last Intel iMac?

Ғылым және технология

Today Apple released a new spec bump to the 27 inch iMac. The new 2020 iMac features some important improvements such as standard SSD storage, 10th generation Intel Core i5, i7 and i9 processors, new and improved AMD Radeon Pro RDNA graphics, finally a much better 1080p webcam, and a new nano-texture glass option. The big question is: is it enough? Is the new Intel iMac with the same design as a 2012 iMac enough to get people to upgrade so close to the release of Apple Silicon Macs? Let’s talk about it.

So pretty hilarious, I placed an order a couple weeks ago for a new iMac 27” but several times had to cancel the order because I realized I made a mistake with the spec like not getting the SSD or Vega 48 and also not getting 8 GB of RAM so I can upgrade later. Well I must’ve freaked the system out because I had to wait for it to reset due to me using the education store and since placing my current order July 30th, I saw today my order was on hold and contacted support. To my surprise I found that my build has been upgraded to the new 10 core processor, Radeon Pro 5700, and my at the time upgraded 512 TB SSD is now standard so my order price actually goes down. I must have an iMac guardian angel or something 😅

Hi, an interesting option, do you know what type of SSD comes with the iMac or more importantly can it be swapped out and what generation/format the board supports. My thinking is, if I'm going to invest with a view to upgrading myself in my own time It'd make sense to invest in the parts what can't be updated, so better CPU & GPU from apple, ram, an easy upgrade to add extra 32gb to the 8gb shipped giving 40gb for around £125, the little shy of £500 ish saved fits nicely into the Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16GB. then debate with myself if it's worth the extra £400 to up the CPU to the i9 I don't mean to confuse you with the strange £ symbol but I'm in the UK

Hey Luke, I'm still running a late 2015 27" iMac. Still meets my needs perfectly. It will be supported at least a couple more years. My thoughts at this point are: I'm good with apple mobile devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, etc. For a desktop though, We all know Apple has been tightening the flexibility the end user has over the hardware more and more. With this said, I don't tweak a lot these days, but I still like to have the options. With that said, I will probably stick with Apple for mobile devices, but may decide to build my own desktop when this iMac no longer is able to keep up. I would miss macos of course, but I am able to use Windows, or Linux as alternatives. I would just need to decide which one would be best for my needs. Always enjoy your videos (even if I don't comment much) Have a great day!

I *have* a 5K 2017 bought in desperation 2018 when my 2014 was going into the shop and the core-i9 model was tardy, and I'm buying the new 2020 5K with a core-i9, a Radeon Pro 5700 XT, 4 TB SSD, and 10gb ethernet. First off, I go up from 8 to 20 threads and from a Radeon Pro 580 8GB to a 5700 XT 16 GB and a 3 TB fusion drive to 4 TB SSD. (The 10 gb ethernet is just for future proofing). This is going to be a _massive_ increase in performance, and I expect my 7-10 hour transcode sessions to drop dramatically - and it puts a H.265 workflow into the range of possibility. The 2017 was pretty anemic, and I can see how if you have the 2019 you might want to hold off, but consider that if you game at all, you still have Windows (either virtual or boot camp) available. On the Mac side, AAA game titles have been pretty anemic, and Catalina bumped off a _lot_ of Mac gaming titles by dropping 32 bit mode - leaving Windows pretty much the only game in town. This machine gets you the fastest consumer Mac ever made, and the last capable of boot camp. I plan to use this machine until Apple silicon Macs become sufficiently compelling, and either AAA game developers start taking an interest in Apple silicon systems or virtual Windows becomes fast enough. Or if that never happens, and Apple silicon iMac and a cheap windows gaming machine. IIRC, the 2017 was purchased as top-of-the-line - the 2017 SSD topped out at 2 TB and was ludicrously expensive - so the big difference is how much top-of-the-line has changed.

In the end, I decided 1) My 2015 iMac simply was not cutting it any more, 2) I really don't want 1st Gen Silicon, and 3) I'm anticipating at least 2-3 years (factoring in waiting for at least 2nd gen Silicon) before I'm ready for a new iMac, so I went ahead and bought 10 core with 5700xt GPU and 2tb storage and bought 128 gb ram from OWC. I think I'll be fine waiting a couple of years for Silicon -- at least I hope so! 😉

We have a late 2012 21.5" iMac. which still functions well on its Mojave 10.14.6 update. Catalina and this computer did not like each other!! The new 2020 27" iMac looks like quite an improvement over ours, but knowing a new design is on the horizon, and that ours still works well, I'm having second thoughts. We don't play games on the iMac, and are not in need of the features on the top tier computer. We use it for photos, word processing, email, and research primarily. The 2020 midrange 27" iMac is the one we were considering. Any thoughts or buying advice?

I am assuming the 27" will still have the RAM access door? It is only $100 to get the 10GB Ethernet. That would future proof it some.

I have a 2010 iMac 27 and it has seen better days plus the software can't upgrade anymore which means my photography plugins aren't supported for upgrades. I want a new iMac 27 but remember getting burned when I bought the iPad 3 and a month later Apple came out with a new iPad. Much better then what I had. So if I can hang on a little longer should I or just go for this new iMac 27?

The ONE thing I'm really worried about is thermal issues (throttling/overheating), especially with the new 10-core CPU. Interesting that they now added the T2 chip. This indicates to me that the iMac Pro will probably not see a refresh and that the 27" iMac is now the standard workhorse for mainstream professionals, including for video editing (now improved with the T2 chip). Another thing I'm curious about is how many external 5k monitors you can drive with the 27" iMac with the maxed GPU. I was favoring the iMac Pro because of the dual Thunderbolt controllers, allowing for two external 5k monitors. Turns out the tech spec page is clear on this: it will run two ProXDR monitors, but only one external 5K monitors. It will run two external 4K monitors, which I might resort back to, at a smaller size, to retain a similar resolution.

@@zero131056 After reading the tech spec page it turns out that you can only run one external 5k monitor, but you can run 2 ProXDRs. So like I thought, it has just a single Thunderbolt controller. You can run two 4k monitors, which I might resort to, and downsize the external monitors to 21" or something, to keep a similar retina resolution.

If OSX is being updated to run on Apple silicon - how long will it be until we can attach a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to an iPad Pro and run OSX directly (and natively) on the iPad. I’m thinking mostly about XCode - but I imagine there are all kinds of other reasons why a power user might want to do this.

6:20 Does this mean they potentially soldered the storage to the motherboard this year? (I actually don’t know if they’re already soldered, but I’m assuming not because they kept spinning rust until last year)

When there are how think apple does design yes its soldered ssd like in the macbooks. So E-Waste by design, and with how slim the Apple displays are and there use the same design for the new iMacs with apple silicon then there is the soldered ram and ssd are not out of reach for them. My last hope there are not soldered down... like in any other redesigneed mac in the last years

they used hard drives and ssds before so they weren't soldered because you can solder a hard drive to the board. Now they likely will be soldered since they have no reason not to. But no one has gotten one and taken them apart yet so we don't know.

PpVolto They’ve actually behaved on the other desktop Macs. Yes the Mac Mini has a soldered SSD, but it had ram slots, I’m assuming the SSD was soldered for that cunt of a co-processor T2, and the Mac Pro has removable, and expandable storage, with expandable RAM. You can still have hope, plus with something like the iMac where there are more configurations, it might be cheaper for them to have ram slots

Luke, I 100% agree with you about these new 27" iMac models. This is good to see Apple staying true to what they said about Apple PCs staying with Intel for at least two years. I do wonder how well that 10 core chip will do inside that chassis? Did you get yours with the 16GB 5700XT? (:

Hey Luke, I'm curious is the SSD soldered to the logic board? So what happens if the drive goes bad?? Can that be replaced? Or something only Apple can fix until your warranty is up. I'm just curious because I usually tend to keep my iMacs for a long time and this would be a bit of a game changer in my overall decision. Pretty sure this is going to be standard operating procedures for Apple and all their new iMacs/ computers coming down the pipeline. Curious on your thoughts! Was waiting for this one because I was a bit worried that the new silicon ones would not have removable storage like this one (RAM). But Apple's lack of putting in another fan or setting it up like the iMac Pro's cooling system has left a bitter taste in my mouth. There is a ton of room in that 2020 27" iMac they could have used to add this stuff. Makes me feel like they are more interested in making 3 trillion then taking care of their loyal customers!! Feels like they just through this one together with parts they had around the shop! Love to hear your thoughts.

when I saw the re-design rumours, I regretted buying a 32" monitor, and a Mac mini in May. With the lack of a re-design, this justifies my recent refresh. I last had an iMac in 2017, and have been holding back getting another, due to boredom with the 2010 design.

So maybe someone can chime in here, We have 3 imac 2017 27inch base models weve been using at work we use them on a regular basis however in the last few months they seem to have gotten really slow we are guessing the hard drives are starting to go in them. Ive been trying my best to hold out on getting them replaced we obviously wanted to wait for the silicon but who knows when that will be, do you suggest we bite the bullet and replace them with these? We normally get apple care on them as well and try to get a good 3 years out of them. We dont need anything crazy spec wise we just want fast running computers that we use for our point of sale and iphone back up and restores. Theres a noticeable difference in the standard hard drive and SSD when doing back up and restores and we do quite a bit of those. We though about a spec bumped mac mini but with adding in a 4k / 5k it seems close to what we would spend on the imac anyways. Just really torn here.

You maxed everything except the ram and the SSD because you really want a look at that new nano glass. The only thing I’m not certain of is the Ethernet because I don’t know if your network supports it - but I’m thinking maxed for future proofing. 🧐. I’m definitely waiting for the first 12-14” AS MacBook as long as it launches with Big Sur. Hopefully AS plays nice with a 2011 iMac in Target Display mode...
