DIY 2020 iMac upgrades! Is the LAST upgradeable Mac worth it?!

Ғылым және технология

The new 2020 iMac is likely one of the last Intel Macs to be released, but it’s also probably one of the last upgradable Macs too! In today’s video we’re going to be taking advantage of this by not only upgrading the RAM but by fully disassembling it and upgrading the CPU as well, all thanks to today’s sponsor, iFixit! Is the 2020 iMac worth upgrading?

As some folks pointed out, I missed that the microphone holes are on the bottom of the display so I accidentally covered them with the adhesive strips, there's almost always something you're bound to forget about when doing a repair! Use adhesive specifically for a 2019/2020 iMac, or just cut the strips before applying.

 certified technician tip: when servicing any iMac - remove the security bar which lines the bottom of the display enclosure. The reason you were having so much trouble wiggling components out is because the bottom-lining adhesive actually covers the roughly 9 screws holding the security bar in place. Once removed everything slides out with ease. It's also one of the first things we check to see if an iMac has ever had any "unauthorized repairs."

@@BilisNegra i actually hate my job. I have to give so much bad news to customers as a technician in regards to logic board failure resulting in data loss unless they've already backed up their data. i'd much rather end-users be able to actually own the tech that they've already bought. just like any PC owner - you should be able to upgrade your RAM, Storage, GPU, and given the recent shift to Apple Silicon - especially the CPU. I'll always share whatever is helpful.

@@BilisNegra the way Apple and Apple servicing is growing no one will ever lose work / income by sharing such things. It’s only when a technology and market are shrinking that people start trying to project their own nuts. It’s book time for all things Apple. Those of us that DIY would never pay for tech skills if we already have em anyway. Just did an airport / time capsule 8TB upgrade on my kitchen table today. Took about 30mins. It seems you broke your microphones at 8:15. Something I want to point out, when you put on the adhesive strips you covered the two microphones in the front, and I suspect that they will sound muffled. The adhesive kit you used is only for 2012-2015, the 2019 and 2020 iMacs have different strips than the one you used. If you want to fix it cut out a bit in the adhesive where the microphones are.

This was quite informative, I just bought a 27 inch iMac, mid tier model with 6 core i5, it performs well, I came from a 2014 model, that I had for 7 years. the only addition I ordered was the 512gb ssd built in, probably did not need it but 5 years from now I may be glad I did, I added a Samsung t7 ssd for my data and remapped the documents, desktop Pictures, music and videos folders to that. I put 64gb of memory in it, and called it done. 2-3 years from now when the processors are cheap and the warranty is gone, I may upgrade the processor, and perhaps someone will come out with a kit to get the internal nvm2d drive working again, But honestly, I think I have about 5 years before my intel iMac will not support the latest OS and I will have to get an apple chip based computer. Shame because I love my intel Mac.

I have the iMac 2017 and did an upgrade from 4C i5 w/o hyperthreading to the i7 4C with HT. (All 7th gen cpus). It has 512GB and I upgraded the RAM to 40GB (8 stock + I added 32) and has Radeon 580 8GB. You were mad about the hard drive, I was happy with the 512 but need more fast storage as well. I bought an Thunderbolt 3 M.2 enclosure (from sonnet I think?) and put an western digital black 1TB in it. Over 2GB/second speed. Side note, I tried the Samsung 970 but it was slower and had hiccups sometimes, the WD is perfect. I have all my music, tv, iMovie libraries on it, so on the internal drive is only documents and iDevices Backups (can’t source them out easily). Yes maybe a TB3 drive is overkill for mass storage of music and movies. But before the next iOS I do always safe my backup with the old iOS to to this drive and it’s around 200GB so I love the super fast storage.

Best advice is get the 27" you can afford, then get the RAM else where and save a bundle! I'm gonna miss user upgradable RAM, I've got a 2012 and the first thing I did was drop 32Gb into it about 5 minutes after opening the box! I've so tempted to get the 2020 and even if it lasts 5 years I figure I'd be ahead of the game just with the RAM savings over the next 27" iMac.

Luke you should do an upgrade to a 2019 27in imac.... why ? remove the fusion drive and fit an nvme 2 tb m2 to the motherboard with an adapter and another 4tb sata ssd to replace the spinner. maybe the cpu as well

Ok Luke. My question is this. which IiMac year and model is the last one that you can upgrade the SSD on? I am thinking 2019, but I am asking someone who will obviously know more on this than myself. Have been following you as much as possible and find all your content very interesting and helpful so far. I am looking to purchase a good refurbished or used iMac that I can do the upgrades on myself. I have built many PC’s in the past and I would like to move up the ladder to an iMac. Please let me know when you can. Thank very much for your time. As always, fantastic content. Keep it coming. Thanks again Luke.

I did the Fusion HDD upgrade to SSD and NVMe to my 2015 iMac and it went well. Until a week later when the screen fell off due to the really bad adhesive strips supplied by OWC. I have now had to order a new screen and am hoping the new one will stay in place. I will use stronger tape and possibly glue. I love Macs but why are they so expensive?

Honestly this is a reason why I just bought one. My eye sight is very bad. I have a MacBook Pro and iPad Pro 12.9” but they’re a little too small for me to see properly for long periods of time. I prefer to use those devices at uni, anyway. So I purchased an iMac with the knowledge you can upgrade the ram and what not. I’m happy with my decision

I think it's at least theoretically possible you could solder on the connector for an SSD (assuming you can find it, doesn't Apple use something proprietary for their removable drives?) and use it for a storage drive, but you cannot boot MacOS on a T2 system from anything but the integrated flash as far as I am aware.

Luke: in respect to Blender: if you tested only under MacOS you didn’t really test the GPU because Blender doesn’t support METAL only Open CL for AMD cards and Mac OS doesn’t support OpenCL anymore. You would have to switch to windows and run it there. In which case you can select options for rendering: CPU only, GPU only or combined.

Isn't it easier and safer to first remove the RAM through the exterior access panel? No accidental scraping ('chipping') of the chips when removing the motherboard, because the profile is slimmer. Of course, installing the new RAM afterwards.
