I am a stylist. When I go to get layers, I want a layer like you are doing now. I find that not only do people rush, but they have no idea how to do a proper layered cut with a traveling guide. I have them just pick up a bunch of hair, cut into it a couple of times, and tell me they are layers. Because of these stylists who are not trained well, I very rarely go for a cut. I wish I could layer my own!!

I would LOVE to find someone to cut my hair properly. I have tried so many stylists since I moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas. I always leave with choppy looking layers. It is frustrating. I truly feel like they hurry and possibly weren’t trained well. Thank you for explaining this. Currently I’m leery of getting my hair cut due to so many bad cuts 🙁

My mother is a Master Stylist, she's been cutting hair for 34yrs, I miss her cutting my hair. I even decided to follow her profession but, no longer can work bcuz of a bad back anyway every single time I make an appt at a Salon I end up looking better when I walked in the door after paying so much $$ for me to go home and fix it myself LOL OMG it's so frustrating, I just have the worst luck, I find it baffling when I go to get my hair cut and do the consultation and they still f@#k it up so bad lol how do u cut hair and not know how to style it or know wth you're doing?? I am the forever growing my hair out client! I have fine straight hair that is thinner on one side. I like to side part to that side. I like face framing layers, but not short feathered layers towards my face. I find that the stylist won’t section my hair, won’t leave extra length in the thin ear area, won’t use a guide correctly… so I find myself always growing out bad hair cuts! My question is how do you get out of a bad hair cut in progress? When I see no sectioning like in the video I sent ahead of time for them to view the style I want or no sectioning to account for my personal imperfections. I just want to grab their hands and yell “stop”! When I have stopped them and asked about the steps. Their response is… I do it this way or I don’t need to because your hair is so fine, etc. Then I always find myself struggling to style it, taking the scissors to it as it grow out and a lot of crying! It seems to me there is also a difference in getting a hair cut versus a hair style.

Have had several hairdressers rush through my haircut. I always feel like, "What just happened!" 'Cause I know what a good haircut feels like! By that time, it's too late. I am going to be quiet, no chatting, during the first haircut with someone new. Right now, I am beyond help, after an entire year of trying to grow out 3 bad haircuts in a row and going on Keto, with the usual initial hair loss, (that I did not know would happen). I just have to wait for my hair to grow back in!

I cut my own hair because the stylists in our area, though trained, pay no attention to the peculiarities of my head and hair: not much in front of ears, fine wavy hair, deeper recession areas, etc. I have had stylists thin my already sparse sides, cut from a middle part even though I wear it side-parted, and layer into the hair covering the recession areas.

My hair is completely cut wrong and the color is bad. After moving 3 years ago, I had my first incorrect cut. I've tried everything from switching salons to over-tipping to having my hair cut off. My current stylist actually stopped my last cut and color to give a consultation to someone she had never met. At the end, I gently said that it wasn't the cut I asked for. She walked away to color someone's hair. The owner said I should go shorter to fix it. Instead, I left humiliated with ugly hair.

Watching this video, I'm realizing the last stylist both rushed through the haircut and didn't come close to sectioning. I'm scared to death to do my own, but after trying so many different stylists, I'm afraid to go to another salon. Plus, I don't want to keep paying for horrible haircuts

Don't do like I did and go to a franchise company without asking if they have experience cutting women's hair, assuming you are a woman or have very long hair. My randomly assigned hairdresser asked another more experienced hairdresser for help right in the middle of cutting my hair. I forgot to give this new lady the same requests as I had to the first lady! That was my 3rd bad haircut in about 4 months, of me trying to fix the first one!

I’ve had many, many more bad experiences with people cutting my hair than I can count. What I felt most of the time is that the hairstylists seemed like they had no idea what they were doing with my hair. I have muuuch hair and it’s rather thick, but a bit porous. It almost always gets to a point when they seem a little desperate with so much hair, so they start grabbing bigger sections and using the texturizing shears way more than they should, sometimes even near my scalp. I got so frustrated that recently I decided to learn how to cut hair myself and I just finished two courses on cutting hair. 😂 This is an awesome tutorial, can’t wait to try it on someone! Thanks!

I would say you want short layers to see movement and bend in the hair, but with the shorter layer still long enough to have bend in it. Even better if you can let them know where you would want your shortest layer to be! Decide if you want your side bang long enough to be able to tuck or pull back, or if you're ok with it falling into your face and share that with them. If there's a section even of this video that you think would be a helpful visual to the stylist you can always show them!

Do not tell a stylist how to do their job, as a Stylist this always complicated things. Show a photo for reference. The best way to get what you want is to ask women who’s hair you like who does their hair & then see their stylist. Go to a Boutique Salon not a Chop shop Super cuts or great clips.

I find anytime I got my hair done by another stylist they wouldnt give me the shape I want. Im a hardcore side part wearer but I like to switch the part from one side to the other but I always hated how it looked like only the top part was layered. Finally figured out layers dont always have to be connected and there can be a disconnect (especially on wavy or curly hair). My hair is more curly on top so I learned to keep that part longer and the sides of my head layer the crap out of them. Finally feels good to have the shape I like while I can part my hair to either side and the layers still look even. Would not recommend for fine hair though.

I watched your video on round vs. square layers and I believe they all used the square layering which does not work on my thick hair. I don’t know how to find someone in the Cleveland area who knows how to properly layer thick hair. I always ask for someone who has either experience cutting thick hair or has thick hair herself. It’s been very frustrating.

When I was going to a Salon, my stylist used to take time with me and she cut beautiful layers. She would always listen as I showed her pictures of hairstyles I'd like to achieve if it was possible with my hair texture. That didn't last long. She became too comfortable with me. When I suggested a somewhat of a more drastic hair style, she said you don't want that hair style, you wouldn't look good in a lob.... The last time I went to her, she didn't take time with me like she usually did. She actually grabbed big sections of the back of my hair to cut layers and it was definitely very disappointing. I decided to call her after I washed and styled my own hair after this Iast appointment. I commented on how choppy and uneven the layers were. Her comment was, your just not drying and styling it right. I've never went back again. She used to make me feel like my appointment was important, and she was very attentive to my blocked off time on her schedule. I've been cutting my own hair, of course I'm not a stylist. But why pay all that money for a disaster I can create myself at home. I wish I was in your area so you could be my stylist.Thank you for sharing such greatly appreciated hair cutting ✂️ techniques.

Ok, full disclosure, I used to go to supercuts twice a year just for the sake of it. I had my hair longest length was to the middle of my back and I had probably what's known as curtain bangs. I would trim my own hair in between my visits to supercuts. My hair is fine and my arms are short so I wasn't able to layer my hair. I would part my hair down the middle in the back, bring each side forward all at once and point cut. With my bangs, I did the twist thing and point cut. I stopped styling my hair because I had to leave my house at 5:30am for a 12 hour shift in manufacturing. I usually just twist my hair up into a claw clip and call it done. So basically just wash and go. After watching people on youtube cutting their own hair at home during the pandemic, I decided that I wanted to go to "real" salon and get a good proper haircut. I told the stylist to cut about 5 inches off the length in the back and I wanted layers throughout and wanted to keep the bangs. She wouldn't give me the kind of layers I wanted because I told her that I don't style my hair and said layers would not look good on my air dried hair. I don't like my hair all the same length because it falls flat and hangs. I would like some body and lift. Can I have the best of both worlds? a layered cut and air dry too? Is there such thing as a wash and go layered hairstyle? I'm 55 yrs old and always had the 90's layered hair, but stopped styling because of working 12 hour shifts. Now I get my hair cut every 6 to 8 weeks but sometimes I only have her trim my bangs because I don't want to get an inch cut every time I go lol. My husbands biggest fear is me coming home with a Dorothy Hamel haircut lol. Oh btw, the salon charges 30 dollars for a wash and cut, I give 40 so she gets 10 dollars tip.

I think a lot of stylists are just burnt out and judge everyone to be crazy or difficult if clients have too many comments or "problems" with their hair. Most people aren't being difficult, just honest and it's on the stylist to listen and try to do what is being asked.

I feel like stylists don’t know how to cut the back of my hair so that the under part in back doesn’t curl up more than the outer part. They cut into the bottom of the back too much so that my hair looks uneven and thin at the bottom. They can’t deal with the different types of curls on one head. They don’t know how much each part will curl up the next time I do my hair. They often cut the bang area too short. They don’t realize that the more my hair is layered, the more the bottom curls up and doesn’t hang down so disappears.

That's really interesting, I was a hairdressers many moons ago, love watching you, definitely would love to see how you deal with difficult situations that sit in your chair.❤

Depends on what the goal is and hair type? Is this for smoothness or volume? Frizz control?

Sometimes they rush without communicating. Language barrier. And other stylists listen and ,cut gently.. .I like we hen they section h as ir and make sure that I agree before the next snip. Tbe dre as df uh l sound of the scissors .. as the snip or butcher . Three seconds of the sound .. Is a sign that it won't end well. . Tbe back bottom is very thick and inner side.. I like hair to blend and accent my cheek bones..not my chin and nose are sharp and now. Tbe back is thick and top is short and be back looks like it's flat as nd bottom has flips CV. Uneven sides and it gets shorter in mid do le of side and then the seoopy facing chin . Top is short and demarcation all over . It looks like a bad wig fom the 70"s ugh.
