My wavy fine hair, when it gets too long and has no layers at all, just drags itself down and drags my face down along with it! I have been cutting my own hair for several decades, but have learned SO much from you- thank you! 🥰

Same exact thing here. I'm 51 and have cut and dyed my own since I was 19. Everyone in a while I think "Oh, let's grow it out"...only to have it end up looking stringy and weird, because the top layer of my hair is fairly straight, but the underside is pretty wavy. So I have to style it every day when it's long, or it looks like a hot mess. After a while I'll cut it to wear it just grazes the top of my shoulders and sometimes add layers or at least make little snips at the end of the length to give it some movement. With it cut that way, it will comb or brush out straight, so I can let it air dry...or I can blow dry and curl or straighten with flat iron or curling iron.

Hi summer, can you tell me which shampoo is your favorite at the moment? I get oily hair I’m 2 days , I’m recently using the morrocanoil hydrate shampoo and conditioner and it makes my hair more oily. Please let me know thank you

I've used your cutting method and super pleased with my hair. Thank you for sharing. Your layering technique works brilliantly on my fine hair. Didn't use thinning scissors though as my fine hair didn't have bulk. Sometimes layers leave it too thin, super happy 😊

I am all about the long hair, but I do like this length on you too. It’s not that short. I’ve been cutting my own hair off and on since I was 16. It comes out so much better now that I’m a stylist, lol!

This is exactly what I'm requesting at my next appointment. I'm so over mine too! I have the same problem, I need to bring my length up, connect the layers, and give my hair a fuller overall look! ❤ your channel Summer!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, honestly my hair was ruined, I followed this and now it’s perfect, I’m so happy. Thank you so much Summer 😘

It’s really good to see you cut your own hair. It looks great. I have to cut my own hair due to back issues (agony to get my hair washed) so this is very helpful. I cut layers throughout on my longish hair but luckily it is curly which conceals any imperfections.

Cutting your own hair is very hard. You did a fabulous job! I love this cut on you. It looks so fresh and makes your hair look really full. Like you, I have denser and thicker hair in the back and thinner and finer hair on the sides, so I really appreciate your tips on how to cut and style our kind of hair! During lockdown, I tried blunt cutting my hair using hair ties to make it even, but I think next time I will try using a guide as you did.

Love it! I'm a stylist, have very similar hair type, cut & color my own hair(because I never take the time to get it done) and I'm also a lefty. It's nice to see the cutting methods you use. Sometimes, watching a right-handed stylist cut, trying to switch it in my brain, gives me a headache! 😂

Oh my goodness, thank you! I have an entire playlist dedicated to “Hair Love”. There are a ton of videos to sift through. Hundreds of tons, actually. I’ve never made it thru an entire video until this one. Thank you for posting. Thank you for being detailed, yet concise. Thank you for using plain language that an average American can easily understand. I still don’t quite understand “perimeter”, but this is the first video that helped me understand how to use a “guide”-every video mentions “point cutting” and using your “guide”. You explained it so well. I think I’ve been using sections that are too thick. They seemed small to me, but I could never see the guide
Looks great! Really suits you so well. This is also how I cut my hair 😊

I really like it this length I had my hair your length or a little longer but I asked my partner to cut it because I was sick of long hair. Now its easy to wash dry and style and also I've noticed it has a natural girl ❤
I love your videos…. I’ve learned so much from you! Always trimming my hair after watching your videos. Most recently I did long layers after that video. Your hair looks beautiful! And you are so sweet to share your expertise with all of us. ❤️❤️

I'm letting a pixie grow out. It's agonizing! I've had my hubby cut just the very bottom back of my head so the other length will catch up. It's hysterical watching the agony on his face. He's so scared but is a trooper and it's actually suitable for now. Reason I don't go to pro is they always cut too much! This way I can just do enough to allow the length to grow.
Thank you for this .. very well explained

Hi, Summer. I usually strongly prefer long mermaid hair, but I can't stand the disconnect/gap/dropoff with the current styles. It reminds me too much of the bi-level/mullet cuts of the 80's.Your hair looks SO much thicker and better with your new haircut! I can't wait to see the different ways you will be styling it. I have pretty much the same length and same problems with my fine straight hair. It's so fine it mats underneath. I usually can't stand layers or even texturizing because it just looks and feels like hair is missing. Most stylists just don't seem to get it like you do, so I really appreciate your videos. I like a nice thick perimeter like you have. My right side is always shorter, thinner, and scragglier, no matter how it's cut or styled. It's more noticeable in photos than in person. Some parts clump or snarl and refuse to curl while the rest is mess of constantly tickly flyaway hairs. I usually don't even sleep on the right side. I try to baby it more than the left side but it doesn't help much. Even stylists can't figure it out when they cut it and insist they've checked the length, then see it still looking shorter in the mirror. 😂
Sooooo much better! I have LONG hair my whole life n i am dying to do this but terrified it wont look good with my face shape. Ugh!!!
Your hair looks great!!

Thx for the vid because next time I get him to use this as he has cut it long at at front but short at the back but I do love it tho. A new least for hair ❤
You look great in that length! Thanks for doing this. I need to fix the front of my hair, maybe I can copy what you did. I have a bob and want the front to be layered more to comb back and fall nicely. Does this make sense? What is that called? I had the owner cut my hair and I spent A LOT and still feel like it needs help. I'm not comfortable going back and asking her. That's silly, I know. As a stylist, what do you think? Should I look for someone else?

As you’re cutting the perimeter, is your finger guide parallel to the floor? It kind of looks like it’s at an angle but I can’t tell if that’s just from the camera angle.

Do the front layers and back layers ‘have’ to be connected?
Summer it looks amazing. I’ve cut my hair so many times without really knowing any techniques. I’ll be honest, not sure I could do my layers like you did. I’d really have to this start and stop this video 😅. I have a really good pair of shears, but no thinning as I have fine hair to begin with. Is it possible to just point cut when wanting some texture and not necessarily thinning? I’ve had hairdressers use thinning shears on me and they really thinned my hair. I never get mad as I know it will grow out, but I do let my hairdresser know I’m not fond of them. Think I’m not quite understanding the difference? Anyway, thank you for a super video. You look FABULOUS!!!! I thank Gabi Girl mentioning you if interested in hair cuts. 😁😁✂️💇🏼♀️🩷
I've been trimming my own hair for over 6 months. I am not quite sure about what to do about the inside part that is just in front/above the ear. Currently, it's 'length' not layered, and tends to come forward. Is that part supposed to be layered with face-framing?
Summer my hair is super thin and super fine I always get a one length bob

Should you part your hair the way your normally style it before cutting or should you part it in the middle and then start cutting? 🤔

If you flip flop your part, one should cut it down the middle. If you know you always wear it to one side, cut to the part you wear.

EXCELLENT Question!! I’ve always wondered that, too. It makes me super uncomfortable when a stylist doesn’t cater to my part or doesn’t even know where it is. I want to get up and run!!! I reeeally want to cut my own hair and that’s one of the basic questions I have. I’m a “big tucker” too lol, so I always made sure to specify that the front layers MUST be long enough to tuck or I’ll hate it. My amazing hair stylist moved 25 minutes away and I just can’t seem to drag myself there… I’m even more scared to try someone new, so I want to take a stab at it myself. THANK YOU for the tutorial/tips. This is the first hair cutting video I watched in it’s entirety (and I’ve tried a lot!! I have an entire playlist dedicated to potentially helpful videos)
Ur so pretty ur hair so shiny beutiful do ur every tuck your hair perfectly behind both ears with a Sleek middle part for a style I think it looks really good with big hoop earrings to finish the look

I have the same problems with my hair. Fine, thinnish, won't hold a curl or volume no matter what products I use or don't use. Clumpy and cowlicky yet full of wispy tickly flyaway hairs. Both sides are worse than the back, but the right side is always thinner and shorter no matter how it is cut or styled, no matter what supplements I take or how carefully I baby the right side, it's always thinner, shorter, and scragglier. Even when a professional cuts it. I tried to tell one stylist, and she said, "Oh, no, no, I checked it all around," Then I showed her in the mirror, and her eyes got big. 😂

@karenhecht2342 Yeah, I got sick of spending tons of money just to bawl all the way home. I realized I could look like $h!t for free and didn't go to a salon for over 26 years. I just did it all the coloring, trimming, and styling myself the best I could. Even with no training, it still usually looked less bad than when I'd been to a salon.
