    I set up a tool like this (chord buddy) for somebody with a developmental disability who loves music but didn’t have the dexterity to fret chords. Using it he was able to make some progress and play along with me a little bit, and he had an absolute blast. Yes these tools are a wreck if you don’t need them. But in some situations they provide access to music making that a person wouldn’t otherwise have. Now obviously this sounds like garbage, so that’s the major problem. As to who asks for this stuff or thinks it’s a good idea? Idk, a lot of people are really into guitar music and want to participate but for whatever reason can’t fret the notes. I have no problem with devices like this in spirit, I just wish they could be good.

    I just commented that I thought this might be useful as an accessibility device. What I wonder is if this might actually work better with classical and/ or electric guitar. A better built version might be able to handle the kind of pressure you need in a steel string acoustic, but clearly this model is not up to snuff.

  • @matthewvaughan8192

    @matthewvaughan8192

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Kevin-jb2pv After I watched this video I looked into it and found an alternative called Chord Buddy which apparently works very well if the guitar is the correct size, and you just push 1 button which thereby pushes all 6 strings instead of 6 buttons (which could still be a problem for people with motor & sensory issues.) It only facilitates 4 chords at a time though so you can only play 4 chord songs, which is the only bummer, but I’m probably gonna get one see if it’s any good. I figure I can record in short chunks - hopefully it still sounds authentic - and I’ll finally be able to create a few of the songs I wrote years ago but can never actually play properly; which would be super awesome. 🤞

    I’m a bassist, and I went from playing nothing (I don’t own any other instruments sadly, I’m broke asf lol) on a regular BAS(S)IS (see what I did there?- 👀 I’m SORRY-), to suddenly playing for like 2-3+ hours total, pretty much daily, and I had NO callouses on my fingers whatsoever. Needless to say, my recklessness and stubbornness to not stop playing when they hurt like a b*tch, did gain me a few blisters, and I had to stop for a few days out of worry of them popping and getting infected, but my fingers eventually did callous over and now they’re just basically mf ROCKS lmao. Also the amount of people that don’t realize just HOW THICK bass strings are compared to electric guitar strings (if we’re referring to the most standard/popular string sizes for both instruments, respectively, and I’ll be referring to the sizes for the standard 4-string bass and the standard 6-string electric guitar for simplicity of course), is genuinely surprising?? Like I’m sure you know this and are already aware of the information I’m about to share, but I’m gonna say it anyways for anyone who doesn’t and may see this: The THICKEST string on an electric guitar is only ever so SLIGHTLY thicker (.001” to be exact) than the THINNEST string on a bass guitar. (The low E-string on the electric guitar being .046”, and the G-string on the bass being 0.45”) Again THE _THINNEST_ STRING ON A BASS. This is why I’d recommend learning/playing another guitar/similar string instrument before playing bass, if you’re worried about finger pain and blisters, so that you have SOME callouses and at least don’t DESTROY your fingers immediately lmao- You could also start off playing with a lighter string gauge (thinner strings) though it won’t sound or play QUITE the same as a heavier string gauge, because you’ll probably have to be more careful about the possibilities of your strings breaking, and keep in mind the lighter strings WILL make it easier to bend and press down on the strings, so when you move up to standard gauge strings, you’ll have to get used to having to apply a bit more force.

    I remember watching the inventor of the "swegway" or more commonly known as the "Segway" scooter. It was a big deal in the tech world when it first came out, it got you around without walking, it didn't tip over if you weren't balanced due to gyroscopic technology I think. He as an inventor said "I consider myself a problem solver. I don't want to solve problems that nobody has!" I see using something that is a cheap piece of junk, but if it weren't... who's problem is being solved here? If you want to play piano and you buy a player piano, that simplifies things, now you have a self playing piano that doesn't need your help to play itself. Electronic keyboards like Casio for 1 example play themselves but allow you to play them too, it'll show you chords but you still have to finger them and you can in theory learn piano that way right? This gadget is supposed to do what. Be a short cut to playing guitar right? So you don't have to deal with the initial pain that comes before developing calluses. Who has this problem? Either learn guitar or don't bother if you're unwilling to get your fingertips chopped up! No shortcuts! There's no crying in baseball!! 😂 This is a problem no one has , no pain no gain is cliche' for a reason. Pay your dues and you'll have no need for gadgets like those little condoms for your fingertips. If you want to pee (censored myself there) in the tall grass with the big dogs, then play until it doesn't hurt your widdle fingews! Man up like Sammi G. and you too can be a Samerai guitar warrior!! Man up like Dolly Parton 😂 🎸🎶✌️❤️🙏

    to be fair, devices like these are usually (or at least sometimes) made for people with disabilities so it's easier to play the guitar; i think i saw a working version of this idea but its kinda sad that this one doesn't work

    The product is meant for beginners who are still learning finger placement, as well as pressure control it's not perfect but it's still a start

    The only time buttons should be on any type of guitar is when there is some sort of electronic element involved. If you aren’t, there’s the door. Don’t let it crush the guitar on the way out.

    The original guy who made it, made it for his daughter who was too young to push the strings down hard enough so he made it so she could play before she was old enough to learn

    This short came under another video of someone reviewing it and it sounded fine. I'm considering this since I can't splay my fingers anymore due to arthritis. Just because YOU don't need it doesn't mean its not for other folks.

    A working model would be cool for people with arthritis. It would make it easier to play more tunes before your joints stiffen up or become too painful

  • @isekaibarnskye2125

    The idea behind this product isn't to actually make playing easier. It's to trick new players into buying an unnecessary piece of plastic with hopes that it'll help them learn faster or be better without putting in the work. It's like those finger condoms or the button thing that "helps build finger strength" but really just gives you carpal tunnel. The company knows some newbie is about to drop a few hundred on some beginner gear, so they target it with the "well if I'm spending $300 already, I might as well spend an extra $15 and take this seriously."

    You wanna learn guitar? PLAY THE GUITAR! There's an older guy at my work that is learning and always shows me all these things to get my opinion and I always say, when you finally learn how to play are you going to use that, he says no, and I said good practice how you want to play, don't take shortcuts

    Although this model doesn’t work well their are other similar products to this that do work well. I wouldn’t recommend using it for anybody that legitimately wants to learn guitar but this type of device can be really good for music class in school. It gives kids a confidence boost because they can immediately make music and it works especially well for students with disabilities who might not be able to play chords normally.

    This particular item doesn't work but in general if you're asking yourself "who is this for?" Consider that it may be for a disabled person. I've found often that's the case with gadgets people see as "useless".
