live-action zuko researching past avatars would also possibly make zuko know that roku is his great grandfather. it is a big reveal in the original.

It was an interesting idea, showing that zuko takes his search seriously. But it should've been played as useless for zuko so he gave up early on, before reaching roku. Throw in a little dialogue between him and iroh with him complaining that avatars are too different so there isn't a pattern of behavior to deduce. Then iroh can reply something like people can completely change over the course of one life so it's normal that avatars are different. At least that way you've made you're addition to the original show not completely stupid, and kinda contribite to the zuko / iroh dynamic and zuko's character arc

@@dire213 it depends. Maybe he'd start by the previous air nomad avatar to study the full last cycle and start by someone probably close to aang. Maybe he'd start by the earliest known avatar to retrace a complete chronological history to see if there could be any evolution in the pattern. Maybe since he doesn't have access to many resources he searched what he could but didn't find much. Maybe the fire nation was keeping roku a taboo so he wanted to start with an avatar easier to access. There could be tens of reasons why he stopped before studying anything about roku

The fact that Aang didn't water bend once in Book 1: WATER Is just wild. Like why did they think it was more important to add visible genocide of the air nomads than to give AANG the AVATAR his iconic moment that, in the original, wasn't just for the sake of showing off the avatar state, but it also for Katara to see what actual water bending looks like and motivates her to learn even more. Having Netflix Katara save them out of nowhere is such a typical modern writing style that undermines the value of character EARNING their moments. They have so much to work on in book 2 and 3 that it's hard to believe they even tried to make book 1 good in the first place.

what bugs me most about the scar makeup is the lack of skin folding that part of skin has been burnt and will heal unevenly, especially for the face and eyes where there’s facial muscle movement. i didn’t like ShamaZuko because that was barely visible, but i could at least see some aftermath of a scar NetZuko looks like they straight up painted on a bunch of rouge and called it a day

that "scar" looks more like he got suckerpunched in the eye and got a big bruise they could've sculpted a prosthetic or something like that and put it on his face, so it'd look more realistic (the only example that comes to mind right now is Gus Fring's half blown up face. from what I remember, that one was a sculpted prosthetic that was put on actor's face and then painted to look all bloody and fleshy and stuff, to make it actually look like he's had half of his face ripped off) but I guess all of their budget was spent entirely on visuals, so that's what we've got

When Iroh is strict and serious at teaching Zuko firebending in the OG show, I don't think it is because he thinks he's preparing Zuko to fight the Avatar. I view it as him just being respectful to the art of firebending, and he knows his nephew learning firebending is the only actually useful thing they're doing there. It had nothing to do with the avatar.

  • @FishStickOnAStick

I always assumed the reason why idols of the Avatar only glowed during that scene in The Southern Air Temple was because of the sheer emotional torrent raging inside Aang, like there was some king of "Ignition point" of spiritual energy the avatar had to give off in order for idols of them to react to it. The only other scene in the series that would've had a similar effect would've been when Aang entered the avatar state against the sand benders, enraged at what they had done with Appa. There's also the idea that _every_ Avatar would've had every reason to be angry at the realization that the Air Nomads were truly extinct, 1/4th of them were Nomads themselves, and the rest had to have formed some kind of relationship with them by virtue of learning Air Bending, imagine the rage of a thousand lifetimes, channeling themselves into one body.

10:49 There’s another problem with this, if all bending follows the same principles then it makes Iroh’s lesson to Zuko about how he studied the different philosophy and style of water bending to learn how to divert lightning bending not make any sense or be irrelevant. The importance of Iroh’s lesson isn’t just that now Zuko can do a cool magic trick, but, it’s a broader condemnation of the limited perspective and monoculture of the current fire nation. Through out the show we see the effect of the war on the broader culture of the fire nation citizens such as spiritual movements like the guardians of the Avatar are now controlled by the state,or “embarrassing” forms of art like dancing is now taboo. This shows the irony of how militaristic nationalism and social Darwinism erases its host culture rather than elevates it and the lesson that Zuko learns is how he needs to respect the diversity in philosophies and perspectives humans have and that to truly allow your culture to grow you need to study a multitude of cultural perspectives from within and from outside your own. It’s a subtle but intelligent way to tie the supernatural elements and martial arts themes into the social commentary on the importance of multiculturalism.

If it were any other fire nation official they would have done just that, and Zuko not doing so shows that he doesn't go out of his way to cause harm (although it may also be that he's so single minded in capturing the avatar that he wouldn't waste time on that when his ship needs repairs and his target is getting further and further away, but I like to think it's both).

I am so done with this show. I cant comprehend how people say that its a good show, or decent. Are we all just so used to mediocracy? I actually was hyped watching the first episode... In the german version they actually brought all of the original voice actors back. The nostalgia really hit hard. Watching this in english really makes me not recognize any of the characters. The Zuko actor might be the only one who makes an effort, however I just don't think he looks like Zuko at all. I had to turn this show off when June captured Aang at Rokus temple... basically teleporting there from the earth kingdom, defeating 5 firebenders and Aang, takes him and teleports back to the earth kingdom. The only good thing about this Netflix adaptation was, how fast it made me want to watch the original again.

You mentioned that they might not do the library because of Wan Shi Tong because of him appearing in a completely different episode, but I feel like they absolutely have to do that just because of how important that episode is. Like the events episode directly leads into every other episode in book 2, they get the goal of reaching the earth king in ba sing sae, and they lose Appa because everyone was stuck in the library and toph was preoccupied keeping it from sinking. If they change anything at all about it that completely derails the rest of the season, to the point where I honestly think they're more likely to replace Wan Shi Tong or just have him appear anyway than change it. Also it's really really funny every time you manage to find and point out something that the movie did better, lol

  • @FishStickOnAStick

I say they're probably not going to cover it because neither Wan Shi Tong nor Zhao mention the library at all. Zhao's mention of it in the original show was the perfect setup to it, and the fact that Wan Shi Tong shows up at all should signify its importance even more, but it goes entirely unmentioned. If Appa gets stolen at all now, which is a big if, I imagine it'll be contained to a single episode. Maybe an episode and a half at the absolute most. I still have no idea how they're going to find out about the eclipse though. Maybe Gran Gran will long distance exposit it after vibe checking the sun itself.

Many people apparently agreed with the changes that Netflix did to Zuko and Iroh, but yeah, thanks for telling me what they actually did. I can't say I agreed before, now I just disagree completely. I guess I also can't forgive them for making Zuko fight back in Agni Kai. Also, I hate how Zuko opened his claw-palm to summon fire while holding his wrist before attacking Ozai. I guess I will never stop talking about how much I hate what they did to bending system. I wish they didn't do this series. The cast is great, but the writing is awful and the worldbuilding is more like world-rubble-gluing because they destroyed everything and glued it back together for the sake of changing.

With the way zuko had the notebook about kyoshi i originally thought he visited kyoshi island at some point. Managed to talk his way into getting information about kyoshi but made a promise to never return and to never let the fire nation come back. With nothing more of value to get from this small isolated village it was easy to agree. But when Team avatar shows up everybody knows that promise has to be broken. A short scene can show it too. Taking place on the bridge of Zuko's ship. Zuko, Iroh, and some of the crew are looking towards the island coming into view. Iroh, with an audible breath of frustration states "They wont be happy to see us again." Zuko responds in his direct manner "They knew this day would come." Iroh now speaking up so the rest of the crew can hear "Yes. And they wont just let us take the avatar. Do not underestimate the Kyoshi warriors. This is their home. They have the advantage" Zuko's eyes do not break from the island as he growls his words "They won't be able to stop me. Crew! Prepair for an assault!" Iroh looks like he wants to stop him. But closes his mouth and lets his nephew continue his stubborn charge. Some of the crew look to Iroh, heading his words but still forced to fallow the bullheaded child. They fallow their orders. End scene.

I think the scene with Aang and Katara practicing bending could have been really cool if they'd actually put the focus on the martial arts aspect. There are some aspects of martial arts that do apply more or less universally, stuff like using your balance and shifting your weight to add strength to your movements, so if he'd given advice to her that involves moving her whole body and not just her arm or something like that, then it would make more sense. Or alternatively, they could've had her be able to bend to begin with, and his advice could've been mixing styles instead. One of the coolest things in the original show was that the main characters (especially Katara and later Zuko) were strong primarily because they would mix the movements and styles of other elements into their kit to throw the enemy off guard. My primary example of this is in the fight between Katara and Hama, the big moment of spectacle there is Katara blocking a big attack, in a way that's completely uncharacteristic of a waterbender. She squares her stands and stops it dead like an earthbender would, catching Hama by surprise. So if this scene was about Katara learning new ways to bend water using the characteristic agility of airbenders, that would be really cool. Maybe she learns to use it as a mobility aid rather than just a projectile, something that could color her fighting style for the rest of the series.

26:17 I don't think all the statues and temples would glow every single time Aang uses the Avatar state since that would be incredibly annoying. One theory I like about this is that all the Avatars were also unconscious when Aang was frozen and unawareof the war, and personally seeing the aftermath of the air temple triggered the rage of every Avatar that lives within Aang.

I thought the thing about the avatar state lighting up at the temples was due to him entering it AT a temple. Which explains why it didn’t light up the two other times

I always see that the statues and avatar stuff around the world glowed the third (I think it was the third) time, was that because of the powerful moment. Aang had jusr found out his entire culture and people were eradicated by finding Gyatso, and that sent him into the most powerful and emotional avatar state yet.

No matter how close they are both age wise or emotional wise. The OoooOh nooOoOo killed me btw 😂 19:51 heh yeah.... 😅🤦🤷 36:57 BAD TOUCH BAD TOUCH!!! Personally, I don’t see the big deal between a 14 and a 12 year old developing feelings for each other. Especially since Aang is capable of acting mature for his age due to his experience traveling the world before and the Air Nomads general philosophies which seem to stress balance and harmony. Katara may be the “mommy friend,” but she is just as capable of being immature and silly as any other teen her age. Put the two together and Kataang is actually a pretty balanced ship. Both bring out the childhood wonder and fun in each other, and have a strong foundation of respect and maturity that keeps them grounded. Anyway, quibbling over a 2 to 3 year age gap between two people who started off as friends, never acted physically inappropriate with each other (maybe the kiss Aang gave Katara in The Ember Island Players, but they were both digesting a lot of emotions based on the play), and were respectful of each other is peak head palming to me. It’s not like Aang is a physically a 112 year old man or Katara is old enough to be his actual mother, they’re two teens with a crush traveling the world together.

I feel like people making these adaptations miss one quite important point - avatar wasn't great just for its darker themes of war and genocide. It was great because it was a genuinely fun show, which was able to hit jokes without them feeling forced, with fun characters and engaging story. This is also something which korra was decent enough with, especially past the second season (although I'd say first half of the second season was also pretty good with until it went off track after the beginnings) These adaptations barely have any of the fun of the main show. They can have no fun, characters are not allowed to smile (and when they are the smiles look insanely forced). They basically remove all the main, fun themes and put the background themes in the front. It's not gonna work.

all characters in this adaptation suffer from the trope of: protagonists = the best, the strongest, the most powerful, the chosen one who hardly requires any work to get better (because It‘s not cool to struggle and put real effort into working towards something you want, right? who’d want to see relatable characters and genuine growth, right?). It‘s a dumb choice in most stories… but with THIS source material? It‘s downright insulting. All of the protagonists in the original have earned their skills and we admire them for it. This Katara goes from making a blob of water to raising a huge wall of from the ocean to „master“ with two platitudes and one scroll that was handed to her.

My theory about the avatar state not showing the first time in the temples was that it wasn't a conscious decision on Aang's part. It's a defense mechanism during the iceberg scene and boat scene. While at the temple he activates it himself.

0:25 Actually the only started doing so in the original show in the third episode, when he went into the Avatar state while at the air temple. Which I think was the difference from the when he went into it in the first two episodes and they didn’t glow then but then did glow when he went into it in ep. 3… so I don’t think that’s necessarily a plot hole.

All bending can work from the same ideas bc bending is more about the mental discipline than the physical, just like jeong-jeong said about firebending and guru pathik tried to teach aang about bending in general. That was the core idea behind energy bending in the og show but they didn't execute it well in the end. Aang in live action does have the right idea but they made his dialogue total nonsense so bad execution again. Also, katara and aang's romance was pretty bad so it's probably best that it's not alluded to, yet. Not that zutara is good either, let's keep that out too

The only reason the other temples didn't glow in the original series when Aang went into the avatar state on Zuko's ship is because Aang had to be in a temple for the orher temples to glow.

Finally!!! Thank you!!! Someone else who can see and explain that the terrible movie, while just an atrocity, does a better job at character development and sets up more potentional for growth and many other things than natla. Natla made the characters so bad, and was only 37 minutes shorter than the original cartoon. The movie setup book 2 better in like 90 minutes than natla did in nearly 8 hours. I'm not saying the 2010 was good, I'm saying it did more justice to the characters and their arcs than natla. This is why I say that the Shyamalan movie is actually better than NATLA. The combat, cgi, etc was worse yes, but the worldbuilding, character development, arcs, etc was better. As a massive avatar fan, I had given up hope on a good adaptation because getting bending right and having the cgi just seemed impossible... but NATLA did that just fine, but they fucked up everything else. The 1 thing you have full control on, and can do no matter what, good character element, they couldn't do right, but somehow did the impossible on the cgi.

Not every time the avatar goes into the avatar state all the temples and paintings in the world light up only once, when the avatar spirit was ignited then there was such a big wave of energy that things in the world glowed, that was the only time otherwise it would be quite a security risk if everything glowed when you go into the avatar state

Controversial opinion. But Shamalans Avatar is better then Netflix, because of its context, it was made as a promo while the show was still airing before we knew the cultural impact, and it was a movie strained for time, so the changes it made was made out of necessity. Netflix Avatar was made in a time when the original show is one of the most analyzed medias in modern time, its cultural impact is undeniable, those who watched the original are now grown up and in the industry, it is also a show that has about the same runtime as the original, so they woudnt need to cut anything, and all the changes made are made out of hubris, the adapters thinking they can do it better then the original creators, even when the orginal creators are right there next to them telling them they are fucking up. And most importantly, its made because of corporate greed.
