Matt O'Dowd has slowly been onboarding a generation and a half in proper astrophysics for the last 5+ years and now that he's got the foundation built and is talking about the stuff he actually loves and studies personally you can tell that this was always the plan. I am incredibly impressed when I look back on it all. I'm a trained engineer, so I have some of "the math" on lock, and it's like being taught to turn my math into literal magic spells.

@@ANunes06 I enjoy PBS spacetime, but it sometimes gets too technical for me. That's what makes it unique though. It goes into a LOT of detail, which you don't often see in pop science channels.

Wish you would do ONE letter from a kid in each Cosmic Query, non-patron per episode. These kids will never forget this, and the boost to their life long love of learning and science will be incalculable

@@LarsRyeJeppesen Pretty easy to make a system that would work in this day and age. Teacher suggests them for one, right of the top of my head. A hand written letter like this one is another. REALLY easy to make it happen. Try positive thinking and not negative

@@sangeet9100 He left out the part of being able to look OUT at the universe as he's falling in, watching the universe 'speed up' relative to him. Before being ripped apart he would probably get quite close to seeing the end of the universe

I asked Dr. Tyson a question by email many years ago. Long before KZread was a thing like it is today. He forwarded my question to another person who answered it. A well qualified person. I was surprised that I got an answer at all, but he made sure that I did.

I'm trying to sound the intelligence is that like a $200 word that's what I call those words because it's probably what you spent to learn it in your United States or wherever you go education system where you actually have to pay to go to university where is here where I live you you get to go to university for free as long as you make the greats. My University education is primarily from the United States so I had to pay but I've also taking classes now here which were free so I'm not sure I had some scholarships so I didn't have to pay so much money so I don't know...Vapid?!? I think he's really cool actually and he's super nice and he's learned an enormous amount since he started and it really shows that anyone can learn and master very complex astrophysics for example. You don't have to go to university in order to accumulate the knowledge that he has over the time that he's been co-hosting this show and I think it's a real interesting to watch his Evolution and his own ability to think abstractly at that high level.

@@bentucker2301 I don't watch. I was fooled into a false sense of security by the thumb nail but had to turn it off about 20 seconds in, obviously - it's quite simple. That's no how comment sections work, they solely exist for people to type their opinion. Or are you someone who inexplicably thinks that comment sections can only have positive things said in them and nothing else because of the sensitive disposition of those who can't handle opinions from across the spectrum?

We elderly viewers may also be living on a shoestring and not joining anyones patrion, but you serve a huge purpose for us in helping us keep our brain cells in working order. We love you as a teacher, and as a delight as a human being. Things being what they are our rare spare dollars these days are often spent hanging on to the nation and the humans still working for “the General Welfare of the People”, the mandate of good government.

This was the best star talk I've seen. Fascinating guest and amusing humour

Charles Liu is like an encyclopedia. Just ask him any question. It's like he has watched all movies, and experienced everything. The guy's like Google.

Don't be mistaken by Chuck's persona. He is an incredibly wise and smart brain who surely would be able to discuss and teach most edge science matters. Add that fast ability to create gags about every situation. Kudos to you, Sir.

Niel’s statement about avoiding the galactic center is even better when you remember that it’s referred to as the “zone of avoidance” by astronomers. This was a great episode and the explanation of direct collapse black holes was enlightening.

Watching Dr. Tyson talk about how falling into a black hole is at the top of his 'ways to die' list was a lot of fun, and how, when you're torn in half, you'd still be alive (apparently a good thing), and the other guys nodding politely. Way to sell it Neil! I watch a lot of Matt's show and was thrilled to see you all together having fun. Great hang!

I love when Matt is here. NDT + Matt = Astrophysics podcast heaven! Cant forget Chuck of course, he is the constant.

The more I watch Neil, the more I realize how little is taught in school. We didn’t even scratch the surface .

Thank you all for this video. I loved the questions that came in. I love to watch your brains twitch when processing the information for the question. That and I'm one who loves long educational type of videos. I watch 4 to 6 hour long videos of professors from the 1940's. I'll never be too old to learn.

The explanation of an event horizon/black hole forming was phenomenal.

The nice thing about gravitational lenses is that they are frequency-independent. Gravitational lenses thus don't split up the light into the rainbow colors, but all light is affected the exactly same way.

In VSL theory gravity itself comes from dispersion.

There should be a channel for college professors regarding impostor syndrome/post-lecture over analysis. As a university professor, I think many of us judge our performance in the classroom, so I appreciate when others are willing to share these experiences - thanks Matt.

This was a good episode, I haven't watched in a while but I found the time to watch this one and it was good

The sad part about learning so much from you, Neil, is that my growing knowledge makes much of the world seem increasingly dumb.

This was to date my favourite StarTalk episode, I just loved the intelligent ideas the patrion members have and also love to Dexter and Abii, they are going to become great minds of their age. And i love how no ones talking about tha fact that these queries are reaching the peal of our host's knowledge 😂 and as Matt said he didnt feel much qualified to ans the queries. But anyway I wish that Neal and Chuck do more episodes with Matt as these are wonderful in-person podcasts, Love from Dreaming High Schooler here!

I loved PBS Spacetime as well and i was listening to it a few years ago, but it was kinda too complicated for me in a way especially as someone whose English isn't his first language so nowadays i rely on books more, but nonetheless they do a great job at teaching.

@@x0riente actually for understanding and simplicity i recommend to you Micheo kaku and his books, i have read 3 books of hawking (Brief answers to the big questions / the grand design / briefer history of time) and i am also reading michio kaku parallel worlds which is an amazing book and so easy to understand, hawking's books are amazing too but sometimes it gets complicated, you can download it as pdf in google if you can't get the book in bookstores

Came to listen to Matt, stayed for the fun banter and awesome questions.

The question about gravitational waves possibly being connected to dark energy in some way, really got me thinking.

My theory on dark energy: Our universe is a black hole in another universe, its gravity is drawing in time and space (much like blackholes draw in matter) from the outside universe, and at an ever increasing rate (more mass, the faster it collects). Dark energy is simply our universe collecting the outside universe's time and space, which causes our bubble/universe to expand.

Not a new idea, part of the reason for all the research around Black holes. Also part of the idea of the multi-verse. Since the laws break down, we don't really know what applies. So, this very much could be the case until proven it isn't. Love the human imagination.

The great thing about multiverse/exoverse theories is that they depend on stuff that's outside the universe, our capital-U Universe, which contains literally everything that is observable - so you never need worry about someone disproving it.

I love the discovery of Pluto. I feel like it was very ironic. While being widely controversial. It redefined our definition of a planet and lead to many more discoveries. Most of all it deemed our 8 planets unique from dwarf planets. A great sacrifice.

The look on Matt's face when he realizes the virtual event horizon at the core of the Earth has a radius of 9mm and not a diameter of 9mm and thus is twice(!) as large (plum size :) ) is priceless. So great to hear these guys talk about real science in a way we can follow. thanks!!
