Stars Ask Neil Their Deep Questions... Again!

Ғылым және технология

How certain are we about aliens? Neil deGrasse Tyson and cohosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly answer science questions from celebrities like Kevin Hart, Jack White, Nikki Glaser, and more!
Comedian Kevin Hart asks if space can take the wrinkles out of a pair of wrinkly pants. We discuss ways you would iron clothes while still wearing them in zero gravity and whether Kevin would have a space valet. Musician Tommy James asks a question about his morning coffee and time travel.
Comedian Nikki Glaser asks about aliens and how sure we are that they exist. We break down the composition of the universe, how common the ingredients for life are, and silicon-based life. How much of space has SETI even looked at? Plus, we explore if love is real. Do other species experience love? Could aliens experience love?
Musician Jack White asks about how rare gold is in the universe and on the planet we live on. Learn about how gravity sorts elements and how much gold can be found in asteroids. Cam Johnson, of the Brooklyn Nets, asks if we can feel the different speeds of Earth’s rotation at different longitudes. Is there one part of the Earth that isn’t rotating?
Thanks to our Patrons Larry Houghton, Marc-ids Foppen, Rob Love, Dominic Hemken, Brian Begnoche, josh lemasters, Mike Yin, Petchu Daniel, Jalal Dallo, and Jesse De La Rosa for supporting us this week.

@@guy3557 Lol no, you seem to be misunderstanding, I know what metaphysical means as much as anyone, and while it can at times involve the “supernatural”, it’s not only that. My point is that the way Kevin posed the question was so distant from a metaphysical question to the degree that I was considering that he in some way *must* *fundamentally* misinterpreted the concept to be more concretely about “physics” or maybe in his mind “metal-physics” the way he posed it. Sort of the only misinterpretation about “metaphysics” that makes sense considering the way he spoke.

Neil, this episode was absolutely fantastic! Your discussion brought to mind a remarkable conversation I had many years ago while returning from Chile. Seated next to me was a gentleman responsible for managing telescopes in both Chile and Hawaii during the early 2000s (his name escapes me now). We delved into topics ranging from the concentration of elements to compound formations in the universe. As an agronomist specializing in plant nutrition, particularly in micronutrients (B, Cu, Co, Ni, Fe, Mo, Zn, Si), I had just concluded some research on the positive impacts of these nutrients on fruit trees, enhancing quality, yield, and stress mitigation. Our nine-hour conversation spanned the universe's elemental makeup and the evolutionary opportunities it has provided for plants. Your comments in this episode echoed that extraordinary dialogue and reminded me of my unique encounter with the only astrophysicist I’ve ever met. Thanks for rekindling those memories and insights!

On the subject of animals and love: There's footage of cats taking care of their companion as they just gave birth. Footage of otherwise slow swans suddenly becoming more active when their partner is brought back to the enclosure or lake. So, if we get excited when we see the person we "love" and take care of them... By that fact, animals could be assumed to feel love as well

This reminds me of this Douglas Adams Quote from "So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish": --- "I'm afraid I can't comment on the name Rain God at this present time, and we are calling him an example of a Spontaneous Para-Casual Meteorological Phenomenon." "Can you tell us what that means?" "I'm not altogether sure. Let's be straight here. If we find something we can't understand we like to call it something you can't understand, or indeed pronounce. I mean if we just let you go around calling him a Rain God, then that suggests that you know something we don't, and I'm afraid we couldn't have that. No, first we have to call it something which says it's ours, not yours, then we set about finding some way of proving it's not what you said it is, but something we say it is. And if it turns out that you're right, you'll still be wrong, because we will simply call him a... er, 'Supernormal' -- not paranormal or supernatural because you think you know what those mean no, no, a 'Supernormal Incremental Precipitation Inducer'. We'll probably want to shove a 'Quasi' in there somewhere to protect ourselves. Rain God! Huh, never heard such nonsense in my life!"

The Wrinkle suit question.... I think you might be wrong Neil.. When you steam your clothes hanging up.. isnt it the gravity pull the clothes down while you steam it that gets the wrinkles out? So if in space with no gravity acting on the clothing.. Steaming would simple do nothing unless you apply a force to the clothing stretching it

I’m about to be that guy… at 22:55 Neil mentioned the Tortoise eating lettuce we really need to stop propagating this stereotype. Lettuce is not recommended for them to eat. Especially iceberg lettuce. Being primarily water, it will flush their bodies of valuable vitamins and minerals with little to no dietary sustenance depending on the type of lettuce and can literally starve them if that is the only food given. Like any animal, if you find yourself as a caregiver to a Tortoise, please do your research for its proper dietary needs.

Patriarchy is the main reason, which was definitely stronger during her day. There are so many female scientists who got their works and discoveries snubbed and stolen by their male counterparts. This was so rampant that some women used male covers often their husbands, and more often they would just use fake male pseudonyms for their discoveries. Not saying this was the case with his Einsteins wife. But her contributions being pushed to the way side was definitely a result of the prejudices of the day. Academia historically has been a very exclusionary field, especially toward women and minorities.

40:06 time mark: Cam Johnson's question about feeling different at the equator than at the north pole. Neil didn't give full coverage of the answer. He omitted discussion of the centripetal force effect on the person's weight. Someone at the equator would weigh about 1% lighter than he would weigh at the North Pole. Nitpicking aside, this was another funny and whimsical (but fact-filled) video to open our minds as to the wonders of the Universe. Well done, gentlemen. And kudos to the guests who posed such thought-provoking questions.
