Multiverses & Wormholes with Brian Cox & Neil deGrasse Tyson - Cosmic Queries

Ғылым және технология

What properties are fundamental to the universe? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice take a deep dive into multiverses, inflation theory, wormholes, and quantum entanglement with particle physicist Brian Cox.
How different would the universe be if gravity were stronger? We explore what adjusting fundamental properties of nature would do and if the universe would even be able to form. What happens to the luminosity of a star when you change the gravitational constant? What is luminosity? Learn about Brian’s multi-city tour Horizons where he explores questions of the universe.
Is it possible that the laws of physics could be different beyond this universe? Are there galaxies beyond our horizon? We discuss the theory of internal inflation and bubble universes and how other universes could be different from our own. What is the underlying law of our universe? We break down string theory, quantum mechanics, and the many ways we could’ve arrived at the universe we now have. Can you really time travel through wormholes?
Are there microscopic wormholes? Find out what Albert Einstein, Nathon Rosen, and Kip Thorne all thought of wormholes. If there were permitted time travel would that mean there is no free will? Brian spoils the movie Interstellar and we learn about quantum entanglement. Could space and time be derived from something deeper? Could it be that entanglement is the fundamental thing that produced space? Is there an edge of the universe? How far are we from it? Just like an electron microscope, could we make a quark microscope to see things seven smaller? Could we someday see the strings from string theory?

The fact that you did so trying to use a microscope- really doesn't matter.

At the 8th dimension the particle is as large as our entire universe, but beyond that the imagination of even the wisest could not comprehend. My mind exploded. It was wonderful.

This was a great podcast, such an interesting concept that now the entangled particles are being considered as connected by a tiny worm holes, that makes a lot more sense than trying to use counter intuition to imagine a non existent connection.

I think travelling back in time is impossible, you can go back, but it won't be to your version of the past, it will split off the same way as any choice you make going forward. So you go back, but you're not really travelling back in time as you move yourself to a new dimension due to a choice and a break in the space time.

I’m from Manchester, UK, the same city Brian is from 😊 Just wanted to let you guys know, both he and David Attenborough aren’t considered God like figures here, they’re just really nice, humble people, who make science accessible for the everyday person. We just consider them as dear family members in our country :) I watch Star Talk nearly everyday, it was really lovely seeing Brain on here too. We’re blessed to have such amazing minds like you guys Keep doing your amazing work X

The best part of the video is that all the 3 guys are using "wired earphones" which are always better at capturing audio due to the low hanging mic than the wireless earpods and what not. Hopefully, more video interviews use them.

Someone needs to tell Chuck that when he joked about the speed of light being a limit programmed into a simulated universe, he was very close to realising that everything moves through space-time at the 'speed' of light (not really a speed given that it's a rate of change of both distance and time, as opposed to just distance, but 'speed' is my best attempt at a description) this arises beautifully out of rearranging the Gamma equation (for time dilation) so that (1/gamma)^2= 1 - (v/c)^2 rearranged again gives us (1/gamma)^2 + (v/c)^2 = 1 the equation of a unit circle, (the most beautiful equation in my opinion) is x^2 + y^2 = radius^2 our movement through time and space must always sum to 1 (the radius). for slow objects, we travel almost exclusively through time, and very little through space. Light on the other hand travels at the fastest speed (unit 1), and thus experiences no time, which fans of physics will know.

I've used the analogy of 2d creatures living on an emensely large expanding balloon, as a wya to explain how we can see space expanding but not find a "center" of that expansion The extension of the analogy is that our universe is "expanding" in 4dimensions, but we being 3d beings, do not have the ability to percieve where that expansion center is; as it is "right angles" to everything else... Could this fit with the idea that space-time is an emergent property of "higher dimensional" expansions???

The language would actually not be gibberish, any more than English or any other tongue is gibberish. The word you’re looking for is Asemic, that which lacks context or intention. Perhaps evolution has created the astonishing randomness that lies before our eyes is so stupendous, why would spoken language even be a necessity in some of these inflationary multiverses.

I use the pair of socks analogy for quantum entanglement. Take out a pair of socks from your drawer. Both of them can be either left or right sock. But when you put one sock on your left foot, the other one becomes your right sock instantaneously. So take out the same pair again, but separate them one million light years away from each other. Again, both of them can be either left and right sock until you put one sock on your left foot -> again, the other one becomes your right sock instantaneously regardless of the one million light year distance.

  • @JoniKukkola

Also the answer to 'the mystery of a missing sock' is that they're just sucked in by a black hole. That's why you never find the missing pair :).

If the earth was a sphere with a radius of 3959 then every distance to the horizon can be no more than 1.22 x square root of the observers height in feet as claimed by Earth curve calculators online (pick any). The black swan argument is described as any view of the horizon beyond the geometric limitations of a sphere r3959. there are many examples of the horizon FAR beyond the limitations of a sphere r3959 - evidence to back my claim search YT - Taboo conspiracy - black swan Canada.
