Ned Kelly, our heroic outlaw with John Molony

John Molony, author of "I am Ned Kelly", discusses the tangled web of reality and legend that symbolises Ned Kelly's life. Recorded as part of the Convicts to Colony lecture series at the National Portrait Gallery in November 2011.

It's interesting to note that the mask of Ned Kelly shows his broken neck. The noose knot was usually placed on the left side of the neck which snaps the head to the right, and this is what we still see on the mask.

R.I.P John Molony who died in Sept. 2018. If constable Fitzpatrick hadn't gone to the Kelly home & tried to shag the 14 year old Kate Kelly, Ellen Kelly wouldn't have had the need to protect her daughter by hitting Fitzpatrick over the head. If Fitzpatrick hadn't lied about what really happened, there would have been no need for Ned to be at Stringybark creek or the confrontation with Kennedy, Scanlan, Lonigan & McIntyre. The whole saga which ended with Ned's hanging may never have happened if Fitzpatrick had been able to control his lust for underage Kate. Fitzpatrick, sacked by the police & discredited, now lies in a respectable grave close to the southern fence at Box Hill cemetery (Grave P.*0905).

The liars in this saga were the Kelly clan..If they hadn't been horse thieves there would have been no need for an arrest warrant to be issued for Dan and Ned, and Fitzpatrick wouldn't have ever needed to go there. But they were horse thieves, and Ned Kelly bragged about it and about how successful he was at it, so if it hadn't been Fitzpatrick, sooner or later someone was going to go there to arrest them and no doubt they would have resisted arrest and some other debacle would have resulted. As for Molony, his statement that Fitzpatrick RAPED Kate is an outrageous and utterly untrue smear against him, and throws a shadow over every thing Molony ever said our did in relation to the Kelly outbreak.

@@Dee-pk5uv We have seen with the Lawyer X enquiry that police are quite capable of breaking the law. Although there were some honest police in 1878 , Fitzpatrick wasn't one of them. A liar in a police uniform is still a liar. I believe Ellen Kelly's account of what happened rather than Fitzpatrick's fabricated evidence. Judge Barry also discraced his profession by sentencing Ellen Kelly for attempted murder despite the evidence that she was just defending her family against Fitzpatrick's abuse of power. Should the toilets at Box Hill cemetery by locked, feel free to visit Fitzpatrick in the Presbyterian section, grave P. *.905, and pay your respects.

@@buailebawns2162 Which evidence did Fitzpatrick fabricate? He said Ned Kelly shot him, and a couple of years after having lied thorough his teeth about it before, saying he was hundreds of miles away at the time Ned Kelly finally admitted that he yes he had shot Fitzpatrick. The Kellys are the liars, including Mrs Kelly who said at her first interview after the event that neither her son ned nor Fitzpatrick were at her house the previous day. You believe HER? And you believe Ned Kelly? hahahaha - two proven serial liars. And you cant show me a single proven lie told by Fitzpatrick - all you can do is repeat slander about him.

  • @samsabastian5560

Let me put you straight Buaile. What Fitzpatrick said was true. He gave evidence at Ellen Kelly's trial and was believed by a jury of 12, although there were two solicitors for the Kelly side who questioned him at length. William Williamson also confirmed what Fitzpatrick said was true, and he was standing there with a revolver in hand holding it on the officer. Ned Kelly himself said, after his capture. "Between 3 and 6 the same morning had another conversation with prisoner in the presence of Constable Ryan. Gave him some milk-and-water. Asked him if Fitzpatrick's statement was correct." Prisoner said, "Yes, I shot him." After Kelly was captured he was interviewed by a journalist from the Age. "Reporter: Now Kelly, what is the real history of Fitzpatrick's business? Did he ever try to take liberties with your sister Kate?" "Kelly: No that is a foolish story. If he or any other policeman tried to take liberties with my sister, Victoria would not hold him" (The Age, August 9th 1880) Ellen Kelly was NOT defending her family. Your comment is just following mythological nonsense. You are so out of touch with the real facts.

This will cement my Kelly history and also put some $ into the local towns - Avenel, Greta, Beechworth, Euroa etc etc. I can't wait to do this. @@dennisbrinckley4474 I suggest you go to Stringybark Creek and pay your respects to the 3 police officers that Kelly murdered there. At least the memorial erected there now displays what really happened, and while you are near there go to Mansfield and look at the huge marble monument erected by the towns people at the time showing the great respect for the police that Kelly gunned down. I suggest before you go read Ned Kelly Black Snake, to get a perspective of the damage Kelly and his thugs did to the families of the police that he murdered. Maybe also read The Kelly Gang Unmasked by Ian MacFarlane, who has researched intensively and shows in reality what the Kelly's were really like. So show some guts yourself and do it.

In my view, Edward Kelly was a criminal. Although I strongly renounce the imposition of death penalty, at the time in which the criminal activities were indulged, capital punishment was very much in the forefront and any person choosing to indulge in such criminal activities, very well knew the consequences following such activities; in which case, Kelly continued with his illegal activities in spite of the known consequences. So be it!
