Necromancy - How to Read a Historical Book of Magic / Necromancy - Reading a Real Necronomicon

This episode celebrates 1000 Subscribers! This time we answers fans of the channel's request for an analysis of a historical book of magic. What if you were to stumble onto an actual copy of the something like the Necronomicon of HP Lovecraft / Evil Dead lore? How would you go about actually reading it? Here, we discuss at length, the various processes scholars perform to understand medieval books - from book binding, to writing media, to medieval Latin and the complex set of abbreviations that often encode the writing of the middle ages - by looking at a page from CLM 849 or the Munich Necromancer's Manual. As you will see, this specific spell is uses demonic magic to produce a magical cloak capable of rendering the magus invisible to all all manner of beings.

    It amuses me how similar magical practice is to finding some kind of exploit in a videogame. Go to this box and if you have the sniper rifle equipped and jump backwards just as someone is going through the door you can actually glitch through the wall which gives you the ability to spawn an invisibility cloak. If not done in time however the system will recognize you're exploiting and boot you from the game. .... This line of thought on magic fits in nicely with Simulation Theory.

    I was this many years old (today), realizing that the "speech impediment" of the Roman leader in Monty Python's "Life of Brian" was ACTUALLY how the Romans back then would actually have spoken..... So all of the snickering and laughter at him in the movie probably wouldn't have taken place because that's the way they actually spoke back then.... Which really makes history that much more interesting (as well as funny).....!

    This has a lot in common with interpreting medieval fencing manuals. First you need to get the transliteration, then you need to try to figure out what the words mean, ie translate it into some kind of modern language, then you need to actually understand it, which requires understanding colloquialisms, random references to things that aren't around anymore, and then decipher the meaning from the words. It's a whole lot of work to come up with anything practical. Probably why the demonic tutor is so sought after.

Have you looked into Al Buni's book of Necronomicon called the 'Sun Of Knowledge' or in Arabic شمس المعارف الكبرى , many believe that it was the first book that illustrated magic practices and interactions with demons. It was also translated into Latin and got forbidden in Europe lost due to its blasphemy. I think there’s a relation between the books you mentioned and this book.

    I didn't know it was translated into Latin. I have that book but in Arabic so I can't read it, but I have a partial Spanish translation. It's mostly talismans made during properly timed astrological elections using Arabic letters to make magic squares, combined with Islamic prayers and names of Allah. I did come across a ritual to summon some jinn though, but I think these are Islamic jinn so I don't know if it can be considered necromancy. It's a very religious book.

    41:40 is this style uncommon for latin texts of this time? Because interestingly, modern "educated"/academic German relies pretty heavily on dependent clauses, to the point were I would say German sentences are twice as long as English ones. So this style might have been inspired by the authors native language

    I would be fascinated to hear your impressions of the Voynich manuscript. As you probably know, there have been numerous attempted interpretations - but most of them involve special pleading, or bad cryptography, or pure fantasy. Do you have any gut feeling about what this manuscript really is? - because I don't.

  • @TheEsotericaChannel

    @TheEsotericaChannel

    I actually worked briefly on the European Voynich Manuscript Transcription Project. My short answer at this point is that I am partial to the hoax theory and I do not think contains an underlying text in either a natural or artificial language. I know people want there to be more 'there' there, for all sorts of reasons, but the mathematical analysis of the text just doesn't strongly indicate that.

    Thanks so much - should be an exciting August! What do you mean here by 'practice'? It's an interesting question - I just want to make sure I'm understanding it correctly.

    So on an invisibility spell, are they claiming I can make myself invisible to normal people? or invisible to demons? Or just what?

    I think most of invisibility spells are more like rituals thats always require some ingredients ,so these spells are less than invisible ,and more like camouflage of incents and liquids

    But remember how the humanists called their preferred script? "Littera antiqua". They saw the Medieval "gothic" culture as a corruption of the timeless antique culture. Not as not modern enough, but as TOO modern to be of value.

    I think it is very interesting how in the late middle ages you had priests preforming magic ither wight or black in private. I have heard of things like this before and we know they did happen but speaking as a catholic this is something that is never spoken of or even acknowledged in many catholic circles..................like the many pagan origins of many catholic customs and traditions and even theology. I think the reason for this is bc. well many are ignorant of these things and the ones who are not will not talk of them for fear of opening the church up to farther ridicule mostly from protestants. So many Catholics today will try to ignore or gloss over the churches dirty / secret/ not so secret past of some priests dabbling in magic or the fact that the Roman catholic church is aside from the Canon Christianized Paganism.
