Neck Training for Balance, Speed, Strength, and Size

In this video, I discuss neck training: what is it for, how does it work, and why do you need it in your life?
Neck training helps to add size and prevents the "Ned Flanders effect" (where you look skinny when wearing a shirt, even if you're actually jacked!). It can also help to prevent concussion by keeping your head steady.
More interestingly though, neck training can also help you to move more quickly, to better track objects on the horizon, and to experience greater stability and balance. It even aids with breathing and the transmission of signals!
Neck training is therefore about much more than just neck curls. In this video I discuss those options, as well as neck bridges (yay or nay?), isometric training, ballet training and more. Enjoy!

It is also possible to find a corner, fold a towel, and lean at whichever degree you are safe and comfortable with, and lean your head against the folded towel, against the wall, and perform neccessary repetitions. Thanks for another great video (and amazing book, (seriously, anyone else reading this needs to buy it, if you want a century worth of the best training, laboriously researched from the best of the best in the field)).

There have been times I used a resistance band while sitting down place the band around your head while your holding 2 ends at the front then rep up if that makes sense. I also do 10 sets with 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds rest .. I use an interval timer app to set that up. I now do it's 1-2 times a week which I find a sweet spot for me .. hope this helps 😁

Really good advice here. A couple of things I get people to do is keeping the head still whilst moving the trunk underneath it (I.e. looking at a screen whilst rotating the chair you're on). And reactive training - one of the most important thing the neck musculature does is resist forces trying to move the head. So getting someone else (who's not too mean!) To try and push your head in various directions whilst you try to maintain a constant position can be really helpful for injury prevention in basically any contact sport.

Thanks for the cool video. I have neck issues for many years and I experimented a lot. You’ve missed out on diagonal rotation> e.g. lay on your back and look towards your shoulder. Then turn your head to the front and at the same time bring your chin towards your sternum. Do this slowly and feel every vertebra doing it’s part of the motion. Do it seperately for left and right. And do it for all 4 quadrants, like start with a straight head and curl your nose up towards your shoulder. And then the same for the back of the neck, laying face down. On the relaxing bit, I like to add drawing a vertical 8 with my nose.

An neck exercise I want to mention is one I do regularly is for rotation. Use a medicine ball and lay back on a bench as you would if doing neck curls. Actually you can do this on the ground too. Put the ball against your head and roll your head from right to left, and back, using your hands to guide the ball and keep it above your head. ( So the ball will be rolling from one side of your head to the other side as your head turns of course) Wear a toque if its uncomfortable. It's a bit tricky but good. I'm actually using a coffee can with some wrist weights in it at the moment lol..easy to adjust the weight. Great video. Cheers.

Another good neck workout we use in Martial arts is using a resistance band/loop. loop one end around a stable fixed point and put your head in the loop on the other end and do a couple of sets of "curls" in every direction. The more resistance you feel you need, the further you stretch the band between your head and the point the band is looped onto. But if anybody here does try this, please make sure you dont loop the end around something that can come loose like a cup hook or some kind of wall embedded hardware. I think we all remember the video of the kid using resistance bands in front of his fish tank. rather loop one end around something like a pillar or the side of a pullup bar or squat rack. Also if you're on a budget you can use a bicycle inner tube cut down to your optimal resistance.

Wrestler and football neck exercises are very useful for building up neck muscles fast.

the inertia experienced on the neck from running is probably greater than the force of the weight used with the strap.

Another great video 👏👏 I have a quick question for you about tendons and I can't find much information on the topic. We have muscle memory that allows us to bounce back from being lazy, but I was wondering if tendons had a similar mechanism. Otherwise after a significant time off we would be at increased risk of injury as the tendons would be lagging behind the rebound from the muscle memory?

Tendons and ligaments get hurt easier than muscles, because those muscles spring back to life faster. So be careful.

6:08 neck rotation, but with a different direction of gravity; lying on a bench looking up and lying on a bench looking down (my invention).

Try resting the back of your head on the edge a bench or couch, sitting on the floor, knees bent. Now straighten the neck and upper body into a straight horizontal line. Adapt this to do all sides of the neck, shift around to make it harder or easier.

is this like a safer version of the wrestler's bridge? It sounds like that to me, thanks for your suggestion 👍

Just lay on a bench with your head hanging off the end of the bench. Curl your head up. I call them head ups (like sit ups but with you head only) you can curl up, go straight forward and back in a line, isometric hold etc...
