    Look how things change: A show with an 18 rating and a 14 share in 1979 was a disaster. Today, a show with that score is considered a miracle show!!!

    Thanks to cable and streaming, *Hello, Larry* would be the #1 show on TV with the same ratings that could only keep it on the air for about 15 months 45 years ago. That’s still longer than any other McLean Stevenson star vehicle. I actually have or used to have a copy of the short film with Jack Lemmon it was based on.

    If they were living in the past in 1979, then what does that say about their business model today when broadcast television is on borrowed time and is not likely to outlive the boomers? At least, now they have cable networks, such as they are, to fall back on.

    Some employees who were angry at Fred Silverman for "not fixing anything" made WE'RE LOUD! as a revolt against Fred. And it was aired live on radio back in late 1979. Damn.

    Actually by the mid 1980s NBC was a beast with shows ranging from The Cosby Show to The A Team. Brandon Tartikoff single handedly saved the network.

    Literally as they gave it up for a few years for a logo stolen from a PBS station in the Midwest. Based on that, and based on how little accountability they received for ripping off *Living Single* in the 1990s after Tartikoff bailed out, they deserved last place then and now. This is one reason why those who were early adopters of cable and Fox left the Big Three behind and never looked back.

    These lyrics didn't age well at all... but for 1979-80 standards... yeah, Fred Silverman clearly had no idea what the fuck he was doing. Thank God that Brandon Tartikoff came to the rescue.

    during the time when this promo was recorded, Tartikoff came to the rescue after Weinblatt moved to head NBC Enterprises in 1980. At the time, Fred Silverman was still with the network until 1981.

  • @Attmay

    @Attmay

    No idea what he was doing? CBS and ABC were both number one under him. His predecessor, Herb Schlosser, was the one who let them fall to last place by focusing on specials over series development. Not only that, NBC was also paying the price for RCA getting into subsidiaries it had no business getting into. And even after he resigned, the few hits he left behind proved to be instrumental in stabilizing the network and providing a basis for its recovery. By the 1980s’ end, CBS would be having the same problems while NBC would be thriving.
