Eventually, they figured out how to make the shows as good as the promos. Now they can’t make either the shows or the promos interesting or memorable as new technology stole their thunder twice.

Considering they’ve owned ABC for almost 30 years, most people who don’t remember pre-ABC Disney might not be aware that their longest association with a single network before that was the 20 years the anthology show was on NBC. The reason they bought ABC was because NBC wasn’t for sale and somebody else bought CBS. Back in the 1950s, though, Walt Disney did not leave ABC on good terms with the network; for one thing, he thought they were behind the times technologically because they were the last to become a full color network.

At the time, Brandon Tartikoff was appointed President of NBC Entertainment in January 1980 replacing Mike Weinblatt, He would later turn NBC from third place to first place with the help of Grant Tinker, who replaced Silverman in July 1981, and Bob Wright, who replaced Tinker in 1986. Tartikoff would remain as the president of NBC Entertainment until 1991 when he was replaced by Warren Littlefield.

Kathy Bates chewed out Littlefield good in *The Late Shift* where she played Jay Leno‘s agent Helen Kushnick. He deserved it for more than just his mishandling of the Carson succession debacle. He deserved it for plagiarizing *Living Single* specifically to take POC out of it. The timing of Brandon Tartikoff’s departure could not have been better. He bowed out right before Johnny did and when the shows that built his legacy were about ready to come to a close.

What we now know as “the 80s” didn’t really get into full swing until 1982. That was the first full year of MTV. That was when Michael Jackson released *Thriller.* It was when *ET* beat everything in sight at the box office. That was when Americans were putting their leisure suits in their attics and replacing them with Members Only jackets that they would turn around and trade in for lumberjack shirts a decade later.

Yes it was, keep in mind that this was a time before Disney Channel or the acquisition of ABC by the Walt Disney Company, so basically all of the major TV networks can easily air the Mickey Mouse shorts, with Disney’s permission of course.

@@dylanlavina2233 this was the 20th and last consecutive year that the Disney anthology show was on Sunday night. Next year, CBS would take it out of guilt for beating it in the ratings once they put *60 Minutes* on directly against it and turned Sunday at 7:00 PM into the Sunday Night Death Slot. Even moving the show to Saturday couldn’t save it.

Yup, that's Mickey. Disney still had a deal with NBC since 1961 to show Disney related cartoons & movies on NBC's schedule (As either "The Wonderful world Of Color" or "The Wonderful World Of Disney") years before they bought out ABC.

Warren Littlefield did more damage to this network than Silverman could even dream of. “Must See TV” was mostly hype outside of *Seinfeld* and *Frasier.* The former was one of the last hits of the Tartikoff era and the latter a spinoff of one of its most acclaimed and popular shows. Littlefield was a simp and a schlockmeister. His taste in sitcoms was rotten, most of his dramas were nothing to write home about, and it’s under his watch that they ramped up commercials and started squeezing the credits into that tiny box that whisks by at an unreadable speed. He also mishandled Johnny Carson’s retirement. There’s a wonderful scene in the HBO movie of the Bill Carter book *The Late Show* where Kathy Bates (as Jay Leno’s agent, Helen Kushnick) chews him out for lowering the bar for the network after everything his predecessor had done to take them from last place to first. Maybe someday they will make Brandon Tartikoff’s book into a film.

They had Disney's specials before Disney bought ABC, which then meant that it all moved to that network afterwards.

At the time, the FCC did not allow movie studios to own networks. That’s why NBC would have to temporarily give up ownership of *Punky Brewster* in live-action when they decided it would be better off in first-run syndication instead of being at the mercy of not only *60 Minutes* but, coincidentally, *The Disney Sunday Movie* by that point when ABC brought it back with Michael Eisner as the new host. NBC went from having very few shows anybody wanted to watch to more shows than they knew what to do with in a very short time. The NBC/Universal deal occurred in the 2000s, by which time the FCC allowed movie studios to own networks, and NBC had regained the rights to the 44 Columbia Pictures Television *Punky* episodes so Shout! could complete their DVD releases that surprisingly outsold concurrent shows that got better ratings. At least we never got a show named after Fred Silverman‘s first crush! His first crush was probably Betty Crocker!

Mickey Mouse went to CBS in 1981, and left there in '83. He came back to NBC later in the 80s, and has been with ABC since 1996.

He came back to ABC briefly from 1986 to 1988, making it harder for NBC to counterprogram against *60 Minutes* with the family-oriented sitcoms and dramas they tried because they knew the same audience would gravitate to Disney based on name recognition even if neither of them beat CBS. *Dateline NBC* was their admission that if you can’t beat them, join them. But it was hilarious to learn that the host of *To Catch a Predator* got busted for bouncing checks around the same time Ricky Schroder, whose sitcom *Silver Spoons* got sentenced to the Sunday night death slot after doing better but still not spectacular ratings on Saturday, got in trouble with the law.
