National Anthem of Rhodesia: Rise O Voices of Rhodesia

Музыка

"Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia" (or "Voices of Rhodesia") was the national anthem of Rhodesia and Zimbabwe Rhodesia between 1974 and 1979. The tune was that of "Ode to Joy", the Fourth Movement from Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which had been adopted as the official European continental anthem by the Council of Europe in 1972 (it remains the European Union's anthem today). The music used in Rhodesia was an original sixteen-bar arrangement by Captain Ken MacDonald, the bandmaster of the Rhodesian African Rifles. A national competition was organized by the government to find an appropriate set of lyrics to match the chosen tune, and won by Mary Bloom of Gwelo.
In the fallout from Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom on 11 November 1965, the country still claimed loyalty to Queen Elizabeth II as its professed head of state, and so retained "God Save the Queen" as its national anthem. With Rhodesia's reconstitution in 1970 as a republic, however, the royal anthem was dropped along with many other references to the monarchy, leaving it without a national anthem until it adopted "Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia" in 1974. The national anthem lost its legal status in December 1979, when the United Kingdom retook interim control of the country pending its internationally recognised independence as Zimbabwe five months later. Rhodesia's use of the well-known Beethoven tune has since caused the playing of "Ode to Joy" to be controversial in modern-day Zimbabwe.

To put it simply the bush war had completely ruined the country, lasting 15 years and ZIPRA usually attacked main infrastructure which kept the Rhodesian life together. Also, a lot of the professional workforce, not just white but also blacks had moved out of the country. Incompetent leadership of Mugabe was also a complete kick in the nuts for the recovering nation.

Rhodesia definitely had its problems, and the internal settlement of 1979 should have been negotiated far before, but goodness it was better than the current sorry state of Zimbabwe An interesting piece of history, is that the Albanian Royal Family, who were living in exile following their ousting from Albania by Mussolini’s Italy in 1939, lived in Rhodesia during the 1960s and 70s, and in fact maintained a significant armed Royal Guard unit consisting of exiled Albanian royalists. The Royal Guard, under the command of King Leka I, cooperated with the Rhodesian armed forces in fighting against the ZANU-PF during the Bush war.

"Ode to Joy". Very beautiful and inspiring to hear it sung as an anthem. Rhodesia was a great country. The British Empire's gift to Africa. I remember it's success, and it's fall. The communist guerrillas could never have won,. Rhodesia was betrayed by its friends. The worst enemy Rhodesia ever had was Jimmy Carter; "Jimmy the Dhimmi". The USA should've been the close friend of Rhodesia, instead, they sacrificed the people to their political vision. Carter was a terrible president for America, but he was far worse for Rhodesia, and many another country.

Can anyone help me find out about Rhodesian history? I have always had a positive view of Rhodesia and was under the assumption there wasn’t racial segregation and both races got along fine. I’m American but of British descent with my last British ancestors coming to America at the same time as the scramble for Africa in the 1890s. I’ve always wanted to move to Canada because I found the arguments in my history textbooks for separation between Britain and America to be ludicrous. I’m a freaking loyalist. But who can blame me? I am an avid history buff who lives in a city chartered in colonial times and is named after Britain’s second PM, with colonial buildings just 10 miles from me, and who was raised in a WASP family that recently immigrated. I’ve always had pride in the British empire and what I knew off the British presence in Africa came from Nigeria and Rhodesia. Now I’m quite distressed that Rhodesia might have not been what I thought and I was wondering if anyone could share resources with me.

Hi. The blacks who lived in Rhodesia certainly benefited in some respects from the presence of the whites. For example, tribal warfare ended and houses, hospitals and schools were built. Consequently, the black population grew very fast (and that also happened in South Africa) but, contrary to what is often said, Rhodesia did have segregation for there were segregated suburbs, and segregated hospitals and government schools etc. Moreover, segregation also existed in the armed forces where some regiments, like the Rhodesian Light Infantry, were exclusively white. On the other hand, in contrast to South Africa, no park benches had 'whites only' signs and in general there was less racial tension. Finally, you might find the following footage from 1978 interesting. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6mhtJmuh7OxoJM.html

@@glendodds3824 Reference the whites-only make up of the Rhodesian Light Infantry, it should be noted that the battalion was conceived shortly after the botched independence of the Belgian Congo, where the mutiny of the black colonial troops against the new government led to an enormous humanitarian disaster. The Rhodesians felt that it would be prudent to form at least one white regular force battalion to augment the Rhodesian African Rifles (a black unit), though at the end of the day Rhodesia's black troops remained loyal throughout the bush war.

There will always be pros and cons about Rhodesia, perhaps one of the better ways to judge it would be its overall history? In 1890 the population was about 160 000 Africans who were scraping by, In 1899 the British South Africa Company founded the Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) Railways, African education in Southern Rhodesia and today still administer more than 95 percent of the schools under government control and subsidy. The first Education Ordinance, December 15, 1899, created an Education Department and an inspectorate and set grant-earning conditions for separate white, Asian, Colored, and African schools 9 years after the European settlers arrived. Salisbury, the capital city was founded on the 12 of September 1890, Bulawayo attained municipality status in 1897 and attained city status in 1943. from the 1930s there was a depression in the economy but the economy recovered after the war and was booming at the time up to Mugabe's take over in 1980, In1972 the total school enrolment for primary through to secondary schools was for Europeans 59,534 9,273 Asian and African 728 538 for higher education 4,941in agricultural colleges, two technical colleges one teacher's training college and the University of Rhodesia the single largest expense for the GDP 20% the highest in Africa anywhere even by today's standards. In the short 90-year history of Rhodesia, a backward scrub of land pulled into the first world by Rhodesians that had great potential and was the breadbasket of Africa, Ironically it was Mugabe himself who heaped the highest praise on the white Rhodesians when he said "We have inherited the Jewel of Africa" another way to judge the effects is Rhodesia African Population rose from 160 000 to 7.408 630 by 1980, Southern Africa is the only place on earth where European settlers allowed the native population to increase larger than the European population, not America, not Canada, not Australia, not New Zealand not South America, in all these lands the indigenous natives are a minority? in all fairness, it's safe to say the Rhodesians were better than most.
